I just keep the lid closed on the rMBP and already kinda got used to it.
Still confused about the resolution - should be a 4k monitor, but the resolution I have isn't 4k.
AFAIK you are already in HiDPI mode. That's why it is said to be "looks like 3008 x 1692". It is drawing the screen at 6016 x 3384, and downscales it to the native resolution, like how scaling works for your MacBook Pro's internal screen.

I am just having the worst luck with this monitor...after a week with this replacement, I've noticed that while in sleep mode there is a high-pitched buzzing noise coming from the top right. (My previous monitor had this flaw but you had to be right next to it.) Almost ready to send it back and get something else. If that new 4K LG had thunderbolt it would be perfect...

I really want to find a replacement too, but there isn't any that I can find

Edit: To clarify I don't experience your issue, yet I experience frame/rendering issues

With the price change, I think I'm going just going to go with the LG 4K. Apple sanctioned, P3 gamut, built-in speaker, volume/brightness works, higher ppi, and it would obviate the need to buy an expensive dock. I have a monitor arm, which would eliminate the ugly stand.

The Apple rep I spoke to swore that the 4K's USB C could support an additional monitor. I have my doubts, but I could live with two cables for those benefits.

That would be the best choice if you have a USB-C Macbook

I also wonder how LG performs when there is ambient sunlight around, I'm guessing, the reason most of us love Dell is the anti-glare

But I would let go off the anti-glare for some operational perfection

I imagine it's just like the latest iMacs.

But yeah, the coating on the P2415Q is perfect. I also have a U2211H, and it's a bit grainy...but no glare on both.

I "fixed" this--it was due to the USB cable. Since I don't plan to use the hub in the monitor, I unplugged it and the problem went away. So, I'm keeping it and sending the LG back. Nice monitor, but way too restrictive for me.

Now, I'm not sure what to do about speakers. I got the soundbar but it hisses. I read that Dell did not insulate it but apparently if you open the thing up you can wrap it in foil...

I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro 13" and been using until recently the Dell U2713HM with 2560x1440 @60hz. I just bought a 4K P2715Q in preparation for my new MacBook 13" TB. I tried to use the 4K one with the older laptop and natively it runs at 1920 and 30 hz. I tried to scale it to 2560x1440 and 59.9hz, but the text is blurry and tough to read. I can go all the way to the highest resolution and it will still show 30 hz and unfortunately it's too small to read.

I'm using DP to mDP.

Am I doing something wrong? I expected the new LCD to perform and look better, but not sure if it's just the limitation of the current MacBook which doesn't do 4K and 60 hz.

You are correct. In 13" form, only the 2015 and later models can do 4K @ 60hz

Understood, but I guess the screen blurriness has nothing to do with that, right?

If the 4K screen is listed in Dells on screen menu as running 3840x2160 at 30hz and the Apple display settings are on default for display, you should be getting a very crisp 4K with the cables you are using. Just verify both of those are on point. Any other setting will be slightly blurry.

It depends on how you scale. If you use HiDPI mode, image quality is much better.

How do I get to that mode? I keep seeing a reference to it.

So basically in the Dell menu settings on the actual LCD itself.

I'm assuming the text will be impossible to read at 3840x2160 :)

You can run it at 4K @ 52Hz on the pre-2015 13" MBP using SwitchResX. Check the older posts. It's "good enough", you won't notice the difference between 60Hz and 52Hz honestly.

Good post - maybe some members who are complaining about Apple working with LG to assure it "just works" will read this and realize they won't have to jump through hoops to make it work.

I found my 2013 rMBP and 2012 Mac Mini did not perform close to 60hz at the 52hz setting, I only noticed it ran much hotter at 52hz. The performance was closer to 30hz than 60 using switchresX. Running the 2016 MBP on a 4k screen at 60hz I can absolutely see the difference.

When people try to make their systems do stuff they are not intended to do, it should be expected that they will have to jump through some hoops.

Received my 2016 MBP, waiting now for the DP-USB-C cable. So question: what would be a good resolution to run on so text is legible on the screen? Trying to save my eyes as much as I can.

For the P2415q, the default for display option is the clearest which is the full 4K resolution scaled in half to 1920 x 1080.
