The email I got seemed to indicate shipping had been pushed back a week, but going to the web site it says to ship from 10th - 14th. (Maybe tomorrow!!). My guess is mine ships tomorrow because I was quick off the gate in ordering. Those who ordered later will ship more around the 13th-14th.

Here's hoping for tomorrow!!

i think you are being a bit melodramatic. its a computer.

Is it only a computer when it keeps planes from crashing into each other, votes from being properly tallied, traffic lights syncronizing to keep traffic flowing, etc, etc.

Is it only a computer when the money I generate from it puts food on my table and a roof over my head?

Seriously, in the vein of respect for a fellow man or woman, can you tell another person what the value of this equipment in their life truly is?

Do you walk in my shoes? This is were respect for others begins.

That's not melodramatic.
A Macbook Pro is indeed our entire workplace for many, and when you trust Apple to deliver, sometimes that can cause quite a stir when they don't.

I wonder if the delay is going to affect those of us who ordered later on. I placed my order on the 2nd, and have had a shipping date of the 14th since then.
Unfortunately that means I can't call up Apple and try, in a polite and respectful manner, to get a free case or a discount.

Talking about cases for the 17" - any recomendations?

i ordered on 24th and my ship date is 14th, not 9th-14th :(

I hope mine ships early & soon.

p.s. The best case / bag / backpack in the Crumpler Base Toucher, but any Crumpler bags are good!

Brenthaven. Specially for a 17"

There are some other forums going into much deeper discussions of cases.

Putting 2+2 together: no ship notices today, that means nothing will arrive by friday. FedEx does deliver on Sat. (especially to Apple Store's), so slight change of arrival on then. in store. But, they'd really have to ship early on the 10th (work day starting there in about 14hrs.) (from Shangai)

So, realistically, it can't be in anyone's hands before Monday - the very earliest.

if anyone's tracking probable cause for delay theories: I say 2.33gHz shortage.

Since Apple pushed my shipdate back by almost a week, one would think they would remove the pre-authorization on the credit card. As of 3 minutes ago, my available credit is still the same (less the amount of the 17"). Just looking for the slightest bit of hope.

You dont remove pre-auths, they expire (usually after 3-5 business days) if the actual charge is not submitted.

I've heard batteries and screens (both unique to the 17" MBP) as the cause.

2.33GHz cpus would delay the 15" 2.33GHz MBPs, which do not appear to be delayed.

now i think you are being extremely melodramatic.

Remember the Pro in MacBook Pro is short for Professional. Hence people tend to use these systems for Work, to do work.
Many of them the speed increase from their G4 Powerbooks (Little upgrade every new system) is worth the cost, and less the wait the faster the return on investment.

For example. Say a graphic designer who business requires them to do the graphic work at the clients location, or while mobile. if it takes them 5 minutes to run a filter on a large image. only to realize that it is off just slightly and undo it and rerun it. Takes a lot of time just waiting for the computer to process. With the C2D using apples optimistic advertising specs being 7 times faster that process is done in less then a minute. Which also allows him to experiment with other filters or just get more work done. So he can offer more graphics charge for less (Less hours) while keeping the same % of margins. Being able to be more cost competitive he can get more business, while keeping the same margins.

Or say a computer consultant who is always on site. Who may have multiple Windows Clients, a Mac or partial mac client and some Unix clients. Having boot camp or virtualization that doesn't suck. Allows him to carry one laptop all day. Being able to get to emergencies faster (not having to go to the office and switch laptops). As well having all the platforms running smooth enough to handle any problem that may come up.

My current system is a 667mhz Powerbook (I have been using the company provided toshiba for a wile now which is still slow and sucky). Using Apples optimistic advertises spec it should be 14x fiaster then my Powerbook and at least 5 times faster then the Toshiba. That extra speed wont make me 14x or even 2x productive as before. But it should give me about a 5% productivity increase, in what I do. And that is worth the money. Because I can spend more time on work I enjoy and less waiting around waiting for the code to processes.

There was NO Mac that required wires run out. Starting with the Mac Plus, all Mac's (until Firewire/USB) came with an external SCSI port. Older Mac's (early 90's) had their own bus called NuBus for expansion (enet, video, data acquisition, whatever).

I'm sure there are other forums better suited to this, though.

You did say original Mac, so I missed on that, however there was a HD that used the floppy port. Again, no wires.

Actually there was an HD that used the serial port, and it was so slow nobody bothered. Apple said at the time it was fast enough for anything you might want to do. I'm talking about the 128k here.

My engineer friend made a debug board for the Apple II that would allow you to dump the RAM out a serial port on the board so you could debug programs, copy programs, etc. His original intention was to allow for "sleeping" by letting you dump the ram to a tape drive, and then restore it.

He had no way to do that on many of the first Macs.

Actually, until you actually have it shipped to you, it IS only a computer. It doesn't put food on your table or anything else.

Obviously you're not a golfer.
I think you should keep your opinions of others to yourself.

i think you should learn to avoid reading my posts in that case.

Remember the Pro in MacBook Pro is short for Professional. Hence people tend to use these systems for Work, to do work.

myself included. and your logic is fine. the point i am trying to get across is that if you will starve to death because apple shipped a product a week late, you have some serious re-prioritizing to do. if the 17 was supposed to be delivered to you on (example) the 7th, then in the buyers head up to the 7th his old G4 was gonna make it, and after the new machine gets here all would be better. so does that mean if the laptop ships on the 14th all of a sudden no work can be done from the 8th to the 14th? all of a sudden he is incapacitated and must fight to survive on the mean streets because his G4 explodes on the 8th?

i can assure you that nobody on this board is less patient than me. and i can assure you that i would be ballistic if i got the same week delay everyone else did. i totally and completely understand wanting to get what was promised, when it was promised. but to act like the world is going to end, people are going to die, and you will have to turn tricks on the street-corner to survive until the new laptop is shipped unless we stand together united in dissatisfaction defiantly in front of Apple's shiny white tanks in Tiananmen Square is, as mentioned, melodramatic at best.

Just be glad you didnt order through the institutional store, I was given 3-5 days lead time when I ordered, its going to be more like 4-5 weeks and they've already charged me for the applecare, Horrible business practice in my opinion, If I order same product today from the normal store I would have it early next week, not December. But due to our Nonprofit status I have to follow the proper channels.

I just checked on my order status, and my MBP is still due for shipping on the 14th, but what's interesting is the fact that the external HD I ordered with it has now been shipped. The original expected shipping date for that was also the 14th, so it's been shipped 5 days earlier than expected. Hopefully the same thing will happen with all the MBP's too (even though they have already been delayed a week for some).

I can't wait much longer!!

Some file went missing on my powermac and now it won't boot, i re-installed OS X but can't be bothered to put all my programs and files back on if i am getting a new computer in a few weeks.

so i am using my old powerbook which already had all my stuff on for when i needed the portability.

but it's 12" so far too small and very very slow!

so come on Apple ship mine first! fly it out over night!

I need / want it now!

I got a 10-digit tracking number for my ext. HD, which is shipped with TNT - problem is, the Danish TNT-site asks for 9-digit numbers

I want to be able to track this as well as my MPB once it's shipped.

Anyone who has an idea about how I go about tracking it then? I tried the Chinese TNT-site too, no luck.

if anyone's tracking probable cause for delay theories: I say 2.33gHz shortage.

I'd put bets on the 160GB HDD being tough to get.
At any rate, Apple was obviously hedging their bets on delivery and it is a poor business practice, but with all the pressure to get these to market, I guess I can't totally blame them...

I agree, the Brenthaven bags are the nicest (IMO) and offer terrific protection. I have the Brenthaven Pro17SC and really like it....

Let's just hope these MBPs get shipped before the Thanksgiving holiday (US anyway)...
