What do you mean by "focusing"? Apple's laptops are handled by different manufacturers, with Quanta handling the pro models and Asustek the consumer ones. Although, according to this report, Foxconn supposedly got the contract to start assembly of the 15" C2D machines. Now, if it really were the 17" machines, this might explain the delay, as Foxconn is new to the Apple laptop biz.

I used the word "focusing" because the MBs are already in people's hands despite coming out almost 2 weeks after the 17" c2d MBP. Clearly Apple wants these machines out there because they're the ones parents will be buying for Christmas presents.

If Apple really gave a damn about the prosumers, they'd get our machines out there before any other new product. Or, if this is as you suggest the fault of a single manufacturer, then Apple could send us all an email and offer us a small discount and an EXPLANATION as to what is going on.

But no, we're not worth it.

Has anyone considered just canceling their order at this point? I know it's a bit on the extreme side of things to do. Point being that if the ship date keeps getting pushed further and further back, what's the use in tearing our hair out every day that goes by with no word of what the hold up is? Whenever they finally start shipping, they should have an ample supply to order all over again if need be. I'm just really not enjoying my first experience with Mac all that much. I do work on both PC's and Macs, though up until this point I've always used PC's. I'm not really wed to one or the other, they're both tools to get jobs done after all. It really comes down to the fact that I've never experienced such a lack of customer service or the ability to find anyone that can answer questions without giving you BS. Moreover, I also do not like that for about 2-3 weeks now the option to cancel orders online has been unavailable, yet they are unable to deliver my product as promised.

Does anyone else feel this way yet? Or are you just holding on for this wonderful ride they're taking us for.

Guess I'm just tired of the hype of the product, the b.s. of waiting, and the frustration with not getting any answers.

I'm out ... for now.

I canceled my order this morning. I'll admit I'm not in the same boat as most of you, having placed my order only last week so my ship date had yet to be extended. However, given what's going on, I very much doubt mine would have shipped on time either. I've held out quite a long time waiting to update my system so waiting a little longer really is no big deal. I have to say that I really don't like the way people here have been lied to about shipping dates. You shouldn't promise something you have no idea about. I'll wait until I can put my hands on one of these at my local Apple store so that I can see if there are any screen issues I can't live with before plunking down my $3k. Maybe by then I'll have decided it's a Mac Pro for me anyway.

Good luck to all.

I just got EXACTLY the same. I think this is a common theme now for most people (i'm too lazy to read all the threads)

Here's mine:

So, I checked on line, and my order still said, Ship 10th, Delivery 17th. ????
I got the email like 3 hours before, so it has had plenty of time to update.

This is my FIRST Mac, and i'm really getting annoyed now, Great product (i hope!) and still it's not here!!!

So, I spoke to Apple, and the guy put me on hold for like 10 mins (literally)
and then he said, erm...yeah it will ship on the 16th!!!, which is what I told him, he gave no reason, but rather kindly refunded £30 to my card, which is nice enough and I accepted. But still, I just want the dam thing now!

BTW: I know I sound flustrated, but I wan't rude to the guy, he seemed genuinly interested, and was a great help

So far: Apple Product - Great
Apple Service - Good
Stupid Chinese Manufacturing - Not impressed!!!

Sorry, needed to vent!

Dan :)

Um, you don't get to look at your laptop before you buy it at an Apple Store. You can look at the floor models, but there's no guarantee the one you get won't have a perfect display.

I understand that but at least I'll be able to tell if it's a common issue and I'll have something to refer back to if the one that comes out of the box is drastically different.

Yes, they do. I've done exactly that on my last two PB's. Ask them, and, if necessary, ask the manager.

They will require you buy it first, then you can look at it before accepting it. They might not have another immediately (with short supply and all) but at least it will be taken care of right then, one way or another. I went through 2 on my 667. My 1.67 17" was perfect, but it was sure nice to leave the store knowing I wasn't going to be surprised by dead pixels when I got home.

Must vary by store, because we never allowed that at our store unless the customer paid a restock fee.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do.. if they push my ship date back (of course they will) I'll probably really consider canceling the order.. I've waited 9 months to buy a new laptop, and by my reckoning the 17" will already be a month old by the time I get my hands on it.. what's another 2-4 months to wait and get Leopard, and maybe santa rosa while I'm making 3.5% interest (ING Baby!) on my $3000.. I'm still going to get my ADC discount at that point in the future.

Also, I agree that it's quite annoying the way that Apple is dealing with the prosumer market.. it's typical, and (ironically) unprofessional

I was just about to edit and add that comment - being store by store thing. I know it's not policy.

3 stores in so. cal. area have been accommodating, though.

Bad sign, not even in production yet?

For the past few days I have not been able to cancel my order on-line. I tried it once in a while out of curiosity and for peace of mind that my 17" was at least in the queue to be built.

Unfortunately, I tried again a few minutes ago. Now it WILL let me cancel my order. Seems like this is a BAD SIGN telling me they haven't even started building them yet.

Mine still won't let me, but mine's a CTO (100 gig 7200 rpm drive)

What is very strange is that I now seem to have an earlier shipping date (the 14th) than some of you who ordered a week earlier than me. Of course my shipping date will most likely be pushed back on Tuesday, and I will probably be pushed back to the 21st.

I might be wrong, but those of you who have had your shipping dates delayed, has the new shipping date not been pushed back 7 days? It seems as since Apple don't know when they will actually ship they just postpone for a week, and then for another week and so on.

I don't think the reason for the delay is due to Apple focusing more on the Macbooks, I think Apple would be as happy as us to see the 17" shipped ASAP.

I would have cancelled my order if I knew there was an alternative, but in my case, there isn't. Unless I buy one of the cheaper Core Duo 17" that I can probably still find in the stores - but now I've waited for 6 months for the C2D update, so it would be ridiculous to settle for a CD machine now.

Are you sure about that? I called an Apple Store today and explained that I am very concerned about a few quality control issues with the MBPs, and asked if I could check the machine out before leaving the store. He said that they would first have to sell it to me, but that I could then inspect it on the spot for things like screen quality, fan noise, etc., and that if something was not up to snuff they would let me return it and sell me another one there and then. So in theory I could go through 5,6... machines, and finally leave the store with that "perfect" one :)

I did this with my last couple of in-store purchases too.

Just buy the gizmo, walk over to the Genius Bar (providing it's not to busy) and ask if they don't mind if you check out your new gizmo before you take it home. Then if there's a problem with it, ask them to fix/replace it.

Hey, another week before ramping up?

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2219

"One AppleInsider correspondent with a bulk order for the new notebooks at stake did some additional digging. He was informed through his Apple channel that the company did not foresee manufacturing ramp of the new models beginning for at least another week."

So, if it's true, that means anybody who was re-notified of shipping for the week of the 13th shouldn't expect it until the week of the 20th at the earliest..

In 2-4 months you've got a good shot at Leopard, but IMHO no hope whatsoever of Santa Rosa.

not that i am an expert, but this seems unlikely to me. there are a few fishy things about this situation.

if apple never planned to 'ramp production' on the 17" until next week, why did they give us estimates of 7-10 days when we ordered the first day?

if there is a component shortage, it can't be any of the new equipment -- the wnic, the hard drives, and the 2.33GHz merom are all available on 15" c2d mbps which have been shipping for a while. but, it's also unlikely it's 17"-specific equipment like casing or displays, since these should be largely identical to the cd 17"s, of which there are plenty.

obviously it isn't a matter of overwhelming demand, for if this were the case, at least a few people -- a quantity equal to the demand they expected -- would have 17"s. by the same token, the delay of my machine has nothing to do with my CTO (as apple reps keep suggesting) for somebody would have gotten a stock model by now.

i believe that this is not a forseen issue, and i think it is probably not a matter of component shortage. i believe that something has gone wrong with the 17" models. perhaps a batch was made, and was discovered to have terrible QC problems, and it is taking time to sort this out. this, incidentally, would explain why so many of us have been unable to cancel for so long, yet seen nothing of our machines either being built or shipping. -- the cancel lock could have been placed when the machines were first built, and not released when they were discovered to be rubbish.

it's very poor of apple not to keep us informed about what is happening. for a laptop with an expected lifetime of 2 or 3 years, a month or two delay is pretty serious stuff, and we deserve at least to know why, that we might reconsider.

Are you sure what you're up against with booting up a new Mac in a store? They all have that intial new user start-up ritual. Can you quickly bypass that? Just not sure. Historically, to get to the normal desktop, you first must have to register the computer, as that set-up stuff. Only after that can you test the speakers, the display, etc. At least that my gut response.

I just called Apple to try to score a discount, and I failed at that :( ...I don't know how you guys did it. I didn't want to yell at the guy. Anyway, he swore up and down that he had personally seen several of the 17" C2D 2.33's (he was that specific) ship today and said mine would definitely be here by next Friday. So...where are the people whose computers shipped today?
