Are you sure what you're up against with booting up a new Mac in a store? They all have that intial new user start-up ritual. Can you quickly bypass that? Just not sure. Historically, to get to the normal desktop, you first must have to register the computer, as that set-up stuff. Only after that can you test the speakers, the display, etc. At least that my gut response.

Nope, no way to bypass. I open the box at the Genius Bar, use their power supply, and start up. Then, I go through the setup ritual. I can start over when I get home, if I need to. I also bring a flash drive with Pixel Check on it for the display tests.

edit: I believe I cancel the registration part, even tho it make you fill out everything.

"You may also visit <http://www.apple.com...> to change or cancel your order anytime before it is shipped."

Quoted from delayed shipment e-mail. Our MBP's haven't shipped but Apple won't let us cancel our orders even though the above statement clearly states we can cancel "anytime" before it is shipped?

What recourse do we have if we want to cancel?

Still Sad

Just got off the phone with The Mother Ship. As many have stated they have no more clue than we do. I told them that the last time I talked the Rep said on the 9th not the 14th. The new rep offered his apologies and refunded my shipping charge. Maybe I am not mean enough to get the 50 bucks, but 50 bucks is not enough for me to make some guy's day that much worse.

mmmm what is my price to inflict misery on someone? Don't know I guess I am a better scientist than a philosopher.

Cheers All

I got a discount without yelling at anyone. Might have raised my voice once or twice though. ;)

For what it's worth...

Just called and asked to speak to a management rep., I expressed my displeasure; waited for C2D's, ordered on first day, had one email notice of delay, read all kinds of forums about quality control issues...

He, Issac, basically offered me a $50 discount and free expedited shipping right away. (Yesterday the service rep. I spoke to wasn't aware of any discounts for unhappy clients.) Anyway, he said they were due to ship on or before the 14th, and the delay was due to unexpected demand, I told him if this were the case we would have seen at least one 17" MBP. He admitted they were in the dark as much as we were.

I accepted the $83 discount and pointed out that there is a forum out there with a thread of over 300,000 views, most posts are about Apple's poor relations with their customers. He did not respond.

Some questions?

1. Does Apple ever ship on Saturday (I don't see why China would follow the 7 Day Cycle that American do. (7 Day week is more of a Judial Christian thing))?

2. What is the average time from the Order actually getting shipped vs. it being updated on the Web Page?

3. Has there been cases where the product was shipped and the Website never noticed it?

My last mac purchase was 5 years ago. I don't remember, how things went.

actually, i have heard that their factories work 24/7.
even in this forum, someone said it earlier.
not that any of that makes it fact of course, just saying :)

if they -were- on a different planet, it might explain this situation.
i.e. they're trying to figure out how to get fedex to pick up the shipments and then mange to find their way back to earth, whilst keeping updated tracking info all the while..

I'd like to bring some diagnostic apps on a flash drive to the store so that I can run them before I walk away with my new MBP, but unfortunately I don't own a Mac right now. Do the Windows formatted flash drives work on Macs, or do they have to be formatted for Mac OS?

The Mac OS X will read both NTFS and FAT32 formatted drives. NTFS will be read only, whereas with FAT32 you will be able to both read and write.

How nice would it be if people would just say "I don't know"..

and I don't give a **** if the APPLE employees only make $3.50 an hour.. when someone on the street asks me for instructions, I don't tell them the wrong ***** directions just cause they AINT paying me... I give my 100% to everyone I meet.... I love you...

and IF I DON'T know.. I say "I don't know"

I don't make up an answer.... LOVE .... just to appease mY ego...

I never implied it wasn't. But they do have have a different calendar system. Chinese New Year being in February not January. As well China has a history of isolating it self from Western Culture, from time to time. So I wasn't sure if they adopted a 7 day work week where they work 5/6 out of 7 days a week or perhaps 4 out of every 5 days. (Which would make more sense being there is 365 days a year) These are the little detail things that they don't teach us in History class and often is rather unimportant for most studies. If there is a day the Chinese location is closed then that way we could expect an extra delay in shipping. of the MBP.

I just called Apple to try to score a discount, and I failed at that :( ...I don't know how you guys did it. I didn't want to yell at the guy. Anyway, he swore up and down that he had personally seen several of the 17" C2D 2.33's (he was that specific) ship today and said mine would definitely be here by next Friday. So...where are the people whose computers shipped today?

That would be a nifty trick, since he's probably somewhere in the US or Europe, and the manufacturing facility is in Shanghai.

I ordered about 3 hours after the store reopened, and mine still hasn't shipped. I would expect mine to be in the first day or two of shipments.

Thanks. Can someone suggest good diagnostic apps that can detect common problems?

Hadn't really thought about that. There are a lot of built-in diagnostics that are run on boot-up. To really test RAM, one should run multiple passes (like using "memtest"), which take some time. If RAM were bad, it's a simple fix anyway.

Main thing I don't want to accept is a dead pixels (or some other display issue). For me, I would feel comfortable using Pixel Check and a physical once-over.

just a side note: Saw my first MBP C2D at CompUSA tonight (2.16gHz). I mainly wanted to check out the iSight "on" indicator. It's as cool as the other posts and pics have tried to describe. Pics don't really do it justice. My best description is to take a picture of the light on the CD MBP. Now, use the healing brush in Photoshop to make it go away. That's how it looks!

hopefully - just a few more days to wait..... :)

Well, I don't know about Apple's slave labor, but I was in China from January till May this year and most people do indeed take the weekend off. Actually, I really liked it there. I could see myself living in Beijing.

From the plain "got your C2D MBP?....." thread...

i am hoping as well. it now shows a 3:50PM departure from anchorage.

so they ship on saturdays, that's for sure.

do the factories still work.. is up to question.
i've heard yes and i've heard no.

*shrug*

i wish we could just know.
why does secrecy have to go -this- far?

i'm hitting the hay now, 3:30am and all.

PS - out of curiousity, how many believe we might see a bump like the CD got when it came out, but just to the 17 :)? [the cpu is maxed out, but gpu and display-resolution are still possibles.]

I seriously doubt they would be bumping up anything at this point. They already announced very detailed specifications of the 17" MBP's. The only way I think that could change is if there was a last minute change due to a problem with what they were originally releasing.

I'm concerned that another set of ship dates will slip. I hope I'm wrong but I have a bad feeling about it. If they slip again I'm going to have to cancel. I move on the 22nd. :(

Still no shipping?

Well, its almost 9:00PM on Saturday evening in Shanghai. I guess the shipping window for Saturday has closed. Anyone get a shipping notice yet on the 17"? I haven't seen evidence anywhere of anyone receiving one!
