Not all routers are created equal so knowing the model # might be helpful.

Here's the thing that I wish forums (like this) or at least its members would add is a Hacked / Not Hacked status indicator. Seems many unusual problems some folks have is because they Jailbroke their iOS device or modded their router firmware. Hacking can drastically change the way your device works for better or worse, it can also mean the device is a firmware revision behind any bug fixes and or enhancements put out by the factory.

@rockinred. What steps have you done to troubleshoot? Have you disconnected all other devices from the LAN to see how ATV performs? Maybe the PS3 is sending bad packets and THAT is messing up th ATV on purpose a la conspiracy theory. Seriously though, there are many troubleshooting steps that can be taken. Have you tried the ATV on a friend's LAN for instance? Does it work there? If so then perhaps there is something in your network that doesn't agree with the ATV. True, if other devices stream properly, why not the ATV, but like a lot of others (myself included) the ATV streams nicely? So the trick is finding out what's unique about your setup and seeing if there is a fix for it. Even try another router to see if that makes a difference.

boecher....thanks for the advice. Friend I have tried about everything and let me say that my xbox and ATV2 stream netflix the worst. I have my original ATV2 in my bedroom working off wifi on original modem and the wii was in kids room working off the old modem that handled the my paid 20Mbps speeds. I would have problems with buffering frequently with my ATV2. Now the wii wasn't perfect, but it was more solid than ATV2.

Anyhow, later and most recently when I rebuilt home theater set up in living room with 3d tv, receiver, components (xbox,ps3,dtv) and bought another ATV2 along with relocating the wii in the living area. This is next to modem. I then upgraded the modem and connected up a switch for all the components. This allowed a hard wired connection to everything. I figured, ok now the ATV2 will get a constant feed with no interruption potential over th wifi in the bedroom. Sure enough, same thing. I don't get it always or constant, but enough to disrupt my experience on movies. Same exact as it was in the bedroom.

I started switching ports initially. I then went in and messed with DNS setting and left it open, tried googles, which has been suggested by others experiencing problems. I connected it directly and thought that helped and at first it seemed like it did until I threw on Blue Streak and sure enough right away. So I have reverted to the PS3 and it never happens. The wii doesn't connect hard wire and it still holds a good connection. The xbox was horrible as it kept resizing images. My iPad, iMac, and Macbook have no interruptions. I waited for the new update which just came out recently and it did the same on a movie.

I decided not to even use it for the sake of getting into movie only to get interrupted when I know I don't have to with the PS3 connection. So I came on here to whine about it, because I like the ATV2 interface. I also get some really good viewings, but it is real hit and miss.

Now many on here have identified a potential issue with the varying feeds that the Internet Service Providers give. i.e. you probably won't get a perfect 20Mbps download rate for 2 hours straight. So some units, like Roku and PS3 might do a better job at caching the stream to prevent interruption of playback. This might explain why others in country are not experiencing because their ISP get a more stable constant feed. Apple might just need to do some tweaking on the cache to allow some flexibility for the different providers across the nation. Which might be the case with some providers like PS3 or roku,etc... This is all just a theory at this time.

I do know it is not just my set up. As many stated here and apple tech support their is a concern out there on this. Even if it was my set up...think about everything that I just did. 2 ATV units...different modem, changing DNS settings, rebooting, wifi, hardwired. Trying all this while another unit like the PS3, wii, ipad, macbook, are all working fine off same feed. This points to one problem with the software on ATV. Just my guess at this point in time.

I've had an Apple TV 2 since September, and I've used it extensively for Netflix streaming.

While I wouldn't say its been flawless, overall I'd rate its performance as being excellent, bordering on outstanding.

Like most people, I do suffer the odd "buffering" lag from time to time. Watch an obscure old movie during primetime? More likely to suffer lagging than watching a more mainstream release during the afternoon.

Just yesterday I encountered a weird problem, where my Apple TV2 wasn't putting out any sound. (Picture, etc. was fine - just no sound at all, even the "clicks" as I switched from one option to the other.) Fixed in two minutes with the reliable power-cycle (turn it off, turn it on) standby.

Went on to enjoy an evening of entertainment, alternating between streaming music from my iTunes library, to watching a great NetFlix movie (Croupier, with Clive Owen.)

If someone has a technical question or problem, most people will be more than willing to offer assistance. Coming into a forum and broadly damning a product for problems likely caused by your own incompetence is the act of a jackass.

I didn't just come in to this forum to post this? I am here all the time. A person that states there are better devices for streaming Netflix = a jackass? This is brilliant on your part. I didn't broadly damn ATV... I clearly stated it is great for other uses and I use it all the time. You should at least read past the first sentence before you blow your stack and act all crazy and say I am incompetent. If you read through this, I have pointed out issues many times where you can say... Look dummy, just do this and it will be fine. but your best response is this?

The fact is, you are not experiencing the issue, so obviously you haven't checked around for a solution to find out that there are a lot of people out there having the same problem. Just because an answer can't be identified just yet, it does not mean this issue does not exist and it does not mean that other devices are a better alternative for Netflix streaming.

So calm the heck down and drink a beer if you are of age.

I'll agree with this statement - I haven't had any major issues with Netflix on my un-hacked Apple TV on both an 802.11n network (Netgear) or an ethernet connection. The Apple TV replaced my TiVo for Netflix and I haven't had any complaints. I know some people have had problems, but overall, it's a pretty good Netflix box.

An even bigger act is attacking people experiencing problems because yours usually works. But seeing as you had problems with sound, perhaps the OP is not the only person whose competency should be questioned...

We got a lot of roku & android undercover agents in this forum

It's amazing how people somehow seem to take it personally whenever a poster has the audacity to posting something that doesn't sing Apple's praises.

There are occasional problems but for the most time I have no issues watching Netflix on my ATV2. HD content and everything.

Just picked up Apple Tv yesterday. Set up was flawless and Netflix works great. I did have the occasional stutter, but nothing excessive.

Was surprised at the HD quality of Netflix, was expecting a lot worse actually. Overall happy with the purchase.

yeah i have the same kinda problems with mine too. We also have a roku as well. when the appletv was givin us problems we immediately turned on the roku and turned off the appletv. The roku has never had a single problem. Appletv would pause about 5-6 times during a regular movie. I quit using it on appletv bc of this. and NO it wasn't something i did or my internet speed. There have been complaints on this for a long time.

My apple tv2 works flawlessly with netflix. Then again I have a 55Mbps connection.

I don't think speed has anything to do with the issues being discussed as Netflix does not cache or buffer any significant amount of the movie onto the :apple:TV device. All these problems with Netflix could be avoided if they allowed people an opportunity to buffer a portion of the movie before streaming it.

I have a 40Mbps connection and I have issues streaming content during peak hours. To be honest I think there service has become increasingly unreliable. MLB.TV caches quite a bit more video during playback and I rarely have any problems streaming HD games. Why these companies don't use the 8GB of onboard storage is beyond me. Why can't Netflix buffer the damn movie for a few minutes?

For me the iTunes streaming model is perfect, for others not so much. With a fast Internet connection, renting anything from :apple: on the :apple:TV is headache free, and looks 10 times better than anything else that's streamed to the device. Every other service is hit or miss. But that's just me. :D

Unlike other streaming services, Netflix tries to improve the viewer experience by changing the stream based on the viewer's internet connection at any point in time. If a person has an internet connection that fluctuates, Netflix has to rebuffer. When I used my XBox to watch Netflix, every movie I watched was interrupted several times by a "adjusting based on a change in your internet connection"-type message while it rebuffered. This happened much more often on HD movies, of course. On the ATV, there aren't any messages and if Netflix is rebuffering, I don't know it. As a result, the ATV gives me a much better Netflix experience.

Netflix is unwatchable on my atv. It works great on the ps3 and the computer. Sucks that the "built for streaming" atv can't handle it, but the game system handles it no problem.

Netflix has become steadily worse and is now unwatchable on my ATV2.

TV episodes stop and start constantly, every few seconds, every few minutes. Stop completely, take forever to start. It's a joke. I just gave up trying to watch one episode of a show tonight. In fact, I can't remember the last time I was able to watch an episode of any show on it without stopping at least once.

Oddly enough, I haven't run into a problem watching movies yet. They seem to play fine. What gives?

It's not my internet speed, I'm on a fast comcast connection, and the ATV2 is connected via ethernet. No problems playing podcasts, youtube, streaming content from my Mac. Only Netflix.

I don't know what the problem is, but there better be a solution and quick. I only watch Netflix on my ATV2, so if it doesn't improve I'm canceling.

Other than an occassional, brief pause I've no issues with Netflix. Works great! My only complaint is content offerings from Netflix. ATV2 is very good and how can you beat $99?

Interesting posts.....
For a variety of reasons I unplugged the AppleTV2 today and put the original Apple TV in its place.
Personally, I can't stand all the buffering issues I've had with the AppleTV2, particularly on Netflix, but also in other aspects of using it as well. Additionally, its a pain when you want to watch or listen to something in "your library" and you find that your MAC either went to sleep or Itunes is not running. Its another one of those little "gotchya's" that separate the ATV1 from the ATV2.
While I do like Airplay, and have considered leaving the ATV2 hooked up for that alone, it too has its oddities and frustrations and I just said "the heck with it".

Maybe another day in the future I'll give the ATV2 another try but for now, I prefer the ATV1 hands down.
Despite all of the above, I would recommend the ATV2 to anyone who is new to the whole Apple TV experience. It's just that its not as good as the original.
As Dennis Miller always says, "That's my opinion but I could be wrong". :)

I'm on Rogers (Canada) Extreme 15mbps (yea still Canada :)) with a dualband Netgear WNDR3700 with the ATV2 on the 5GHz channel. All devices are using the latest factory firmware. All works perfectly.
2.4GHz is a busy band, lots of thing such as microwave ovens can cause grief with WiFi.
OP have you tried it with wired Ethernet?
Yes the ATV2 supports 5GHz (has un-enabled Bluetooth too)

my house: apple tv 2, 1TB time capsule - using as router as well, rogers digital cable (canada) no problems what so ever...

other house: apple tv 2, bell sympatico modem/built in router......no problems there

/shakes tiny fist :D

I seriously need to upgrade my connection. This thread makes me feel like I did when everybody was switching to broadband and I was still on dial-up.

But wow, 55Mbps? You can actually max out a WiFi-G connection on Internet alone? Sweet.

Apple TV and Netflix

I get Netflix great on my pc. Apple TV nada! It works great and instantly set up, I was very happy....for about 2 days. Now it cannot get Netflix.
What gives? Anyone found a solution?

Apple needs to fix this. At my girlfriends house she only has 2.5mpbs internet speed and netflix works great using wifi on are blue ray player. My parents have an AppleTV 2 at there house with 12mpbs internet and appleTV will pause and randomly lock up.

No issues with netflix on aTV2 yet. It is running wired from my Verizon router to my time machine to the aTV2. All wired and it works great. Maybe a wifi issue for some? I didnt read the entire thread so maybe that was covered already.

Never had any buffering issues with ATV2 running wireless. We run 3 ATV2, 2 iMacs, 2 MacBook Pros all wireless and all the time on first gen Time Capsule. Plus a Mini server and Thecus NAS wired. Only have a 7.5 meg dsl connection. Never had it take more than 5 secs to start playing on Netflix.
