When will iPad Pros get any kind of upgrades?

At this point whatever happens (or doesn't) in March, I'm prepared to just wait for the mini LED update. Even if it's well into next year. If it means my gen 1 Pro goes a full 5 years of full time service that'll just be a testament to what a fantastic device it is!

It is tough, especially since the new 12.9” is shaping up to be quite a nice upgrade to the current model. Re: timing, the best source is usually Ming Chi Kuo, although it’s no guarantee. His current forecast—it’s slipped about three quarters since the initial prediction he published back in February 2019—is 3Q2020. (Personally I wouldn’t be surprised at October or November, but Kuo says July-Sept.)

There are some sources saying Q1, which Kuo had previously predicted as well, and even he hasn’t been explicitly withdrawn that earlier rumor. But as I mentioned, Kuo’s latest prediction, at least for the 12.9” Pro, is 3Q2020.

Upgrades (Kuo rumor) include mini-LED backlit display, A14X processor and 5G. Many here expect an increase in RAM from 4—>6 GB. Maybe an upgrade from 64—>128 GB for the entry level storage as well; it seems due. Quite possibly a price increase as a result of all the upgrades.

Really annoying that new features come with price increases. The thing is they cobble these together using currently-available parts each time. The new parts that come out a year or two later don’t typically cost more for them to acquire the the similar parts the last time, so why the continual price increases? Yes, yes I know... because they CAN.

Just curious: What do you need 6 GB RAM for?
More tabs in Safari without forcing reloads. More apps open at once without them being shuffled to SSD due to low memory.

Well, I don’t really think “cobbled together” accurately describes how Apple designs iPad Pro, especially since that design starts with spending likely a billion+ on an “X” variant of the SoC (rumored to be a 5nm A14X part this fall) 🙂

In any case, Apple’s selling prices are very much dependent on component costs. For instance, 5G alone added $200-300 to Samsung’s flagship last year, but I’m not sure how much of that increase is due to the cost of parts. Mini-LED backlighting has so far only been implemented in the $5,000 XDR monitor, so that’s an unknown as well. (The RAM bump and possible base storage increase are not particularly likely to result in price increases.)

Also, note that Apple’s gross profit margin hasn’t been increasing over the last five or so years, so prices aren’t being raised in excess of what’s necessary to keep up with costs (component and otherwise).

re: tabs in Safari, it’s my understanding that Safari intentionally limits its use of RAM in order to be a “good citizen”. So it’s entirely possible an increase in RAM won’t affect tab reloading. I have a ton of tabs (300+) open on my 2GB iPhone 6s, so I’m well aware of the issue 😭

New hardware and software features often require additional RAM. For instance, time of flight sensor data and the processing thereof is likely to eat up RAM. So even though Apple could theoretically bump up Safari’s RAM allocation with a new 6GB max, they might refrain from doing so. Hard to say at this point.

I would be shocked if it’s not upped to 6 GB RAM in 2020. It’s overdue. iPad Pros have been at 4 GB for going on 5 years now.

I'm waiting, Apple!

Meanwhile... A new patent application is out.

In the application, there is a passing reference to a touchscreen Mac, although mostly the patent application is mainly about iDevices interacting with Macs.

The waiting is killing me...wanna buy an Ipad Pro 12". I'm currently in Asia but in March I will go in Europe and likely will have to wait until May to come back in SE Asia where is way cheaper than Europe.

yeah and if waiting is anything like I had to wait for the MBP 16", was forever! lol.... I just picked up a 12.9 at Best Buy here in the US for a few hundred off...

Excellent price! The current model is a beast.

How are you liking it? I’ve got a first gen model (2015) that’s starting to show its age. I’ll either upgrade this year or maybe hold on until 2022, since I plan on replacing my iPhone 6s this year.

Yeah 6GB or even more for the most expensive SKUs.

But my point was actually that a memory increase doesn’t guarantee that Safari will use up more of that for itself. A 6 or 8GB device might not provide any change at all in tab reloading behavior.

No it doesn't, but my expectation is that once the hardware actually exists, Apple update the OS and apps to utilize more RAM as necessary. That's the whole point of the additional RAM after all.

It seems to me that Apple increases RAM at a very measured pace, and only so far as it’s necessary to support larger requirements mainly by the OS and hardware. But preventing tab reloading seems to be a very low priority for them in any case, at least up to now.

Safari being a good citizen and playing well with others means Apple limits its memory footprint, deliberately. There’s a better use of RAM than increasing the amount of RAM to cache Safari data, such as caching the OS.

My point is it’s not as simple as more RAM=less Safari tab reloading. There’s a lot more going on under the hood. With respect to Safari tab reloading, 6GB RAM with iOS 14 might end up being much better, we could see no difference or it could be worse.

There’s really no way to know, and I personally wouldn’t make an assumption that it necessarily gets better. With a bigger pool, should it get better? We’d think (and hope) so, but Apple might keep the same cap it has now, if they think it’s enough as is. Who knows 🤷‍♂️

So for the next iPad Pro the updates are going to be a camera that's similar to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and an updated processor? What about the rumour of MicroLED display?

I really think Apple have a great tablet design with the iPad Pro 2018, i just think they need to focus on brining more Pro software. Final Cut Pro X would be nice.

Not microLED (that’s it ready yet, even for the small Watch display) but mini-LED backlighting is predicted by Ming Chi Kuo and others for the upcoming model, at least for the 12.9”.

Yea I meant mini-LED (I got the two mixed up). I’m hoping they do more than just add more cameras. I’m still using a 2017 iPad Pro and waited to upgrade to this up coming version.

However there has been a spanner thrown in the works. I really like the look of the upcoming Surface Neo, I might hold off and see what happens with that. Especially if there isn’t much added to the new iPad Pro’s.

Sounds like a good plan :)

Seems like they’ll both be available this fall.
