When will iPad Pros get any kind of upgrades?

I’ve changed my Mind IF there is a 2019 iPad Pro Refresh. Here goes.

#1. Stronger body design less bendy
#2. 6GB RAM across the board
#3. Full featured Thunderbolt 3 port
#4. Tripple Rear Cameras
#5. Included Fast Charger
#6. 8 Core A13X CPU
#7. Bluetooth 5.1 two devices at Once
#8. 128GB base model
#9. HDR10 compliance
I would be surprised to see full Thunderbolt 3 support on the 2019 model, but it would be nice.

But it appears the iPad Pros may already be capable of doing simultaneous USB 3 and 4K 60 Hz even without TB3, although I don't think anyone has confirmed this yet.

Barafeats just did a test comparing new iPhones with iPad Pro line and MBP... don’t see a reason for Apple to have an A13X model this year.

They do need to run this again since the new iOS update as the iPhone is over 3500 now. However the iPad is still very far ahead as highlighted.

Hey there

Weren't iPad's always introduced at iOS events? Or will it be October when we see a new iPad Pro.

Also why does the iPad pro only have 4-6GB of Ram. Shouldn't it have at least 8GB? My smartphone has 8GB of Ram.

Or is the iPad OS really that efficient that even heavier design & video tasks are done without hiccups with only 4GB?
Apple devices don’t need tons of ram

If they somehow fix the burnin issue with OLED and offer that, that would be a huge step up IMO.

But if it's just the cameras and the A13X, I can't afford to upgrade.

i've just got my new watch i'm now just hoping for an update to the ipad pro currently using the 2017 12.9 if theres any refresh i'll probably get it obviously i'd like some significant upgrades but even a speed bump and other minor updates would be welcome camera updates don't have any interest for me thats why i've passed on the new iphone this year.

My hunch is that there will be new ipads announced this autumn/fall but it won't be anything significant i hope i'm wrong though.

The current iPad Pro beats my expectations. For a machine with only 3gb ram and a Mobile cpu this screams. Never had a hiccup or a beach ball moment. The AX12 is so fast. So fluid for my everyday needs I don’t even look for an upgrade anymore unless the October/ November event shows significant upgrade and not just camera.

Current one is 4 GB RAM... like it has been since 2015. It's overdue for a RAM upgrade. RAM on iPadOS doesn't usually affect benchmark performance, nor does it usually affect basic usage that much for individual applications - 4 GB is fine for most individual application usage for most people on iPadOS right now. However, it affects more complex usage of certain apps, and does affect multitasking capability for many people. And perhaps most importantly, RAM amount affects longevity of a device. I don't think an iPad Pro sold in 2019 should have only 4 GB RAM, unless it is heavily discounted. We like to keep our iPads for a very long time. 3 GB is now entry level for iPads. 4 GB is decent in 2019 for most people, but isn't much more than entry level US$329 iPads, esp. considering the much more capable iPadOS 13 just came out this week.

My wife wants a 10ish inch iPad but her needs are lighter than mine. If the 4th gen iPad Pro has only 4 GB, then I might just pick up a 10.2" iPad for the wife, and continue using my 4 GB 10.5" Pro and wait longer. If the 4th gen iPad Pro has 6 GB, then I will buy that, and give her my 10.5" iPad Pro.

I'm 95% sure it will get 6 GB RAM though. Typically, the Pros have had twice the RAM as the entry level models, so 6 GB would make sense from that point of view, and also would make sense as the logical next upgrade from the 4 GB it’s had for the last 4 years.

I don't believe you can have TB3 without intel processor (someone correct me if I'm wrong), but you can have USB 4

Hands on with that iPad Pro 2019 mockup:

Does anyone else think the slab sides in this video, as opposed to my 12.9" (2017)'s curved sides, indicates they've redone the case to make it stronger?

It looks basically the same as the 2018 model, aside from the camera.

It’s possible they’ve reinforced it internally though, even if the external appearance is the same.

BTW, even if it does get a triple lens camera, my bet is it would look more like the iPhone camera, not like in that mockup.

MC Kuo says Mini-LED iPad in late 2020 to mid-2021.

If true, I wonder if it will get a form factor update.

MicroLED displays are going to rule over everything. Perfect blacks, and brighter than anything else.

Imo they're done for 2019. New iPads will be on 2020 with A14X. The benchmarks are showing that the A12X still performs better than the A13 in GPU and multi-core.

Want to get the 2018 iPad Pro as my first iPad (for university), but I'm waiting because of this possible refresh...Every day is a struggle with my falling-apart notebooks haha. Guess I should wait it out a few more weeks though right? I figure either the new model will be enticing or there will be a price drop on the 2018 Pro.

I thought it was vice versa?
No. Some implementations of USB 4 will include Thunderbolt 3 support.

IOW, USB 4 is a really big deal. Unfortunately, it will likely only be available on real world products in 2020 or later, since the official spec was only released in the last month.

I suppose theoretically the new iPad Pro 2019 could include it but it seems rather unlikely.

^^^ Now, @Precursor has me hoping for USB4. :p BTW, we're supposed to write it as "USB4", not "USB 4".

BTW, Adobe has shown off its new drawing app. They still need to demo its flagship Photoshop again on an iPad Pro this fall, as it's due for release before the end of the year. If that's not done at an Apple event, I'll be somewhat surprised.

EugW, you don’t have a brief summary or a link to a good article about what the deal with USB4 is do you?

Is it another different type of hardware plug or is it backwards compatible?

I’m still not completely certain, but I believe USB3 and USB-C are two different things. Where USB-C has a different kind of plug and USB3 has the same one USB2 has.

I’m surprised USB4 includes implementations of TB3. Because I thought TB3 was an Apple proprietary thing and USB is an open specification. Don’t think I’ve ever heard of an open specification including a proprietary specification.

Just do a Google search. Info is all over the net.

In short, Intel (not Apple) owns most of the IP, but they have made it royalty-free, so that the USB4 Group can incorporate it into their specification. The interface is USB-C.

However, not all USB4 devices will support Thunderbolt 3 devices, since it's optional. Although TB3 support is now royalty-free, there are still technical costs to implementing it. For example, it would make sense for a USB4 phone not to support TB3. OTOH, it would make sense for a USB4 iPad Pro to support TB3, but the question is when. Fall 2019 with the 4th gen iPad Pro is a theoretical possibility, but my guess is it would come with the 5th generation iPad Pro, if it comes at all.

Adobe Max is scheduled for the first week of November where they'd no doubt dive deeper on Photoshop for tablet / iPad, so end of October would be a great time to unveil some updated hardware ;)

I’m waiting for the new iPads to come out as I didn’t have the funds before but I do as of now so I’m insisting I wait for the new one in October.

I’m excited to see the things Apple has to offer coming around in 2019

Every year (to my understanding) they have updated the iPad Pros. There are the bend issues. (That has had a lot of news when the 2018 pro came out) And now we have learned that Apple did have internal documents regarding iPhone 6 bendgate. Even tho they never publicly said anything about it they released 6S update that fixed this.

I assume it's pretty safe bet (and A13X) that we would have an refresh. Plus, the fact that this year Apple released iPadOS and now that Microsoft has released Surface Pro X. Although, arguably iPad Pro 2018 is further ahead in performance (probably) with A12X already.

+ Apple Arcade got released, Apple would probably mention A13X's "Awesome GPU performance for gaming"
