To me, the clue is the glossy black iPhone 7. It paves the way for a future all-glass iPhone 7S.

Because weren't the rumors for wireless charging across the entire iPhone lineup, and not just the iPhone Edition? I could see that being the only cosmetic change to the 7S just so they can all move to glass and at least have wireless charging.

If they stay with tradition and there are only internal upgrades to the 7S, well, as I said before, that'll suck to be an iPhone-only fan, in my opinion.

All rumours point to glass back on all iPhones so all will have wireless charging.guessing the 7s models will just still have a home button.

That's my guess, too, if the wireless charging rumors across the board are true. Better than nothing, I guess.

But still a shame for customers that this is how Apple intends to catch up to the competition -- by introducing a third, higher, and even more expensive tier, while the 7S and 7S Plus get shafted.

If that ends up being the case, oh well, what can ya do? Apple will be Apple. They operate on a different timetable than any other company.

I don't think it's their choice though.

I think they want two models with oled and no home button but due to such a shortage in oled displays available to them they seem to have had to restrict it to one model.

Yeah, I'm sure yield rates are absolutely a factor. Either way, it's a shame for the customer.

The irony of all of this is that fragmentation of hardware and software used to be a go to arguement from Apple purists against Android. Yet, now we have fragmented MacOS hardware/software (Touchbar vs. no Touchbar) and if these rumors hold true, we'll also have fragmented iOS hardware/software.

This probably is the least excited I've been about moblie tech in quite a while, especially in regards to Apple. While the upcoming handsets from LG and Samsung appear to be impressive advances in hardware, I'm a software guy first, preferring either iOS or stock (or near stock) Android and timely updates. I like to know that the version of an OS I'm using on my new smartphone will be consistent with my last, meaning at this point it's iPhones or Pixels for me. And as I'm really not liking the rumors about the next iPhone(s), looks like my phone upgrade hopes all ride on the next Pixel.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Right. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised one bit. If they keep to tradition, then what does that make the 7S and 7S plus? Pretty much a three year old design that's expected to go for a fourth year.

For better or worse, only Apple could get away with this.

I just hope they don't keep this strategy up even in 2018. Keep reusing this old design and implement incremental updates and charge hefty premiums for new features.

They will, When was the last time the iPad design was changed? Not since the iPad 2 really, they've just been made thinner with smaller bezels, that's pretty much it.
The Apple Watch design is on its second year, and the iMac and Mac Pro are a few years old now, and let's not forget the Mac Pro internals haven't been updated since launch let alone its design!! The only thing they've done with that in the UK is inflate the prices by £500 in the name of Brexit... yeah right I'm sure they must be making a loss on a four year old computer
Oh and I nearly forgot about the Mac Mini.... I think the MacBooks are the only new computer designs in the last four years?

I'm afraid to say, since Cook took over, Apples MO is to regurgitate the same old designs over and over...

We could talk about iOS too... but I think we all know how old it's design is.. I'm getting fed up of unlocking my iOS devices and oh look it's NOW updating its apps, another bonus point to Android for that one!

So out of curiosity why do you have Apple devices if the cons outweigh the pros?

There are many things that are more seamless on Android.

But yes, there is plenty for the software to catch up on, too.

Pretty sure I said that before to you, or others, so I won't waste my time doing it again. I won't go down the rabbit hole with you.

Background updates seems to be an obvious thing you'd expect iOS to have by now, I guess it won't ever get it?
I have to say software wise Android on my Nexus 5 is better then iOS on my iPhone 6S.

it is frustrating knowing my home screen looks the same as everybody else's. Thats the downside to IOS. Even if IOS allowed themes that would be something different

Yup. That'd be nice. And it's not just about cosmetics, as I've always said. Customization means the phone caters to your preferences. For a device that we use everyday, multiple times a day, that matters.

Android does its best to cater to you, the user. And does it with style.

Yup. It's really shocking to me how many things feel so manual on iOS.

This extends to software updates too. When I had the Pixel, the background software updating felt more like "it just works" than iOS' method, which requires you to be on wifi to even download the software update.

I have been using my iphone all day today....IOS feels like a step backwards compared to Nougat and the Pixel.

I have heard that too for some. My experience has been different. I think the Nougat update added almost an hour SOT to my S7e. But some have had different experiences.

I guess we have differing definitions of what "catering to the user" means then.

Above everything else, I desire an integrated computing solution which just works right out of the box and that matters all the more when we use our devices so many times a day.

Take for instance the iPhone + Apple Watch + Airpods combination. What alternative is there outside of the Apple ecosystem that works as seamlessly together?

Or AirPlay mirroring (Apple TV + iPad Pro + Apple Pencil in the classroom).

All the customisation in the world means squat if you can't even get your fundamentals in order for the end user.

you forgot to mention that if you wanna use ALL those devices mentioned in your post, you gotta pay about $3000+.
But thats a minor detail I guess ;) ;)

I sincerely think it's great that you found an ecosystem that works for you.
[doublepost=1489123791][/doublepost]Is Sony trying to fail?

They're offering another snapdragon 835, but once again, disabling the finger print scanner.

Can someone adequately explain why this is? Is it a patent thing?

Integration may be great but I feel Apple is demanding too much for features which are standard on Android. Apple's left me in an awkward position here. I would feel scammed buying the 7S knowing that the features I desire are now there on the iPhone except I have to pay more than 1K to get them. In addition the 7S just has incremental updates. My only alternative at this point is to get an Android for these features and wait out till the features become more affordable on iOS before I can get them. If Apple continues this policy of reusing that 2014 design again and again and the only model being improved is that premium one then they have lost me as a customer forever.

This move may also result into Samsung and other manufacturers now going 1K plus territory which is another reason why I dislike this policy

The plus iPhone with 256 gb of storage is $969. I don't think the rumoured premium model would cost that much more. Maybe $50-$100 extra max. Criticism of the iPhone costing well over $1500 and allusions to the $17000 Apple Watch feels way overblown, imo.

They discussed this on an episode of the Vergecast. A couple of their writers had a conversation with some Sony people at MWC and while they weren't provided with specific details, the implication was that Sony was handcuffed by some agreements made with US carriers (i.e. feature exclusivity) that prevented it's inclusion in US sold models. It was also implied that these restrictions had time limits so and that Sony is committed to the US market so that they have to just forge ahead until those restriction expire. The US versions will be the exact same hardware as that sold in other parts of the world, just with the fingerprint scanner disabled in the software. If someone flashed the version of the OS from Europe or Asia, the fingerprint scanner would work.

People keep saying this but that's actually false. The $969 iPhone has 256GB. The reports regarding the premium iPhone state the base price of the premium iPhone is above 1K. It won't have as much storage as the Plus iPhone at 1K. If they name it iPhone Edition (which makes sense) it's almost a certainty that's it's going to cost a huge premium over the plus iPhone

Didnt the jet black iPhone 7+ start at 128 gb as well? What is to say the premium iPhone won't do the same? Or maybe there will only be one version of it with 256 gb of storage, with no option for more or less?

It will definitely go at a premium, but unlikely to be as much as previously rumoured.
