I got to know from sammobile that my Note 5 will not get an Oreo update. I think I have done well to resist the temptation of the S8 and the Note 8. Needed to buy a secondary phone...stayed far away from all the Samsungs. Got an iPhone SE and a Moto G5S.

The Moto's camera is not as fast as Apple's but it is 60 bucks cheaper. Still, prefer the SE by a mile! iOS 11 runs smoothly on it. And I am pretty sure iOS 12 will too.

Thanks for the info as I have a Note 5 as my secondary phone and was wondering if it was going to get Oreo or not. Disappearing to hear that it isn’t.

Think I've answered my own question. The more I read, I'm back to going with the 8 Plus vs the X. The X seems to be an improved version of the regular 8. It feels like if you're a Plus user, you're actually losing functionality to an extent.

Well in spite of the raw screen sizes you seem to be losing actual usable screen space.

That’s one of the problem I’m having. I’m not and have never been interested in the regular sused iPhone so a souped up version of that isn’t really any good to me.

People need to stop comparing the iPhone x to the iPhone plus, that's like comparing the Note to the regular S8. You compare the Note to the S8 Plus. Likewise, next year's 6.4" X plus will be the one that iPhone Plus users should get.

i agree to a point. But Apple designates some features for different phones so in order to compare like for like you have to go with the latest model to the latest features.

What kind of functionality will you lose going from the Plus to the X?

Will there be a 6.4" X Plus next year?

According to some Korean Daily yes. I doubt it though. Apple's already having trouble managing demand for a single phone, let alone a 6.4 inch OLED which will have even greater demand. Its why I cant hold myself from buying this phone. I have no idea if Apple intends to make a 6.4 phone next year and if they don't my wait will be in vain.

Hopefully you're right

Watching 16:9 etc on the new iPhone X will have a smaller viewing area than the iPhone 8 plus ergo reduced functionality.
Reduced video playback size doesn't equate to functionality.

The function of a video is to play and it does/can do so regardless of the viewing size, therefore its function is not governed by its size.

Experience may change, practicalities may alter, enjoyment may be impacted, but functionality remains constant.

From the dictionary.

Functionality:

1) the quality of being suited to serve a purpose well; practicality.

So if the purpose of your phone is to play movies or tv shows of which the majority are still 16:9, then the new iPhone X does indeed have reduced functionality.

This, and people are acting as though the difference between the Plus and X is akin to comparing a Plus to a Palm Pre. It’s silly. The difference in size between the two screens is negligible.

No you are referring to practicality not functionality and editing the definition to suit.

From the same dictionary

1. The quality of being suited to serve a purpose well; practicality.

‘I like the feel and functionality of this bakeware’

--- in your inference this part of the dictionary definition is not suited. It is in the

Further definition of functionality

Synonyms

1.1 The purpose that something is designed or expected to fulfil.

A video as per your example is designed and expected to play, therefore the functionality is not impacted by its size.

Likewise if it is such a pressing concern, there are plenty of other devices you can buy with bigger screens. Apple are not forcing anyone to buy the X.

Yep, the difference is really nominal, it's not like we're comparing mountains and molehills even though the internet sure does like to try and make them such .....

My theory is there are a lot of folks that very much want the X, suspect it'll be hard to get, and thus need to insist they didnt want it anyway.

So much conversation on here is folks trying to validate purchasing or not purchasing something.

Thanks for not making me feel bad about my possible purchase because that's one of the gripes I have. Hopefully I won't notice much of a difference.

From Cult of Mac:

Apple tells iPhone X component suppliers to slow down shipments

In fact, Apple has supposedly told component makers for the iPhone X to withhold shipments until Apple has gauged the sales performance of the recently released iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Just as I've said before, Apple can literally afford to wait. With supply constraints predicted to last into the first half of 2018, I think the iPhone X is going to be a frustrating launch for the customers.
