I’m quite enjoying iOS 11’s features on the whole, but the reduced battery life and lag is frustrating. My wife runs a graphics and marketing company and she can’t believe some of the design details Apple have used either. It certainly feels like a step backwards in terms of aesthetics in some places.
How much battery life have you lost? Has it halved? Do you notice the home button lag?

I don't know how outdated it is. Part of the reason I'm enjoying it so much is because I am not a huge fan of the new aspect ratios on the Galaxy phones, for instance. My Note 8 is probably my fav phone of the year but over the last week or so that I've had the 8 Plus, I tend to prefer consuming media content on the iPhone. The speakers probably play a role in that but still.
For those of us on IPhones, that design has become tiring. We have used it for 3 years and need something fresh. That’s what the X is. That design and display have become so nauseating to me that I am getting ready to move to a smaller screen with the X.

With all this speculation about supply constraints on the new Pixel and Google not really taking this hardware venture seriously, I’m beginning to doubt my choice in going in this direction.

In the meantime before tomorrow’s event I’m taking a serious look at the Samsung S8 now, plus the Gear VR thingy. On their website I can get both with a trade in of my 6s for $650. That doesn’t sound like a bad deal, does it?

Its a great deal. I am in the same boat. Not too sure I would use the VR headset as much. I would however use that 360 camera they have.

I'm not big on VR either, but for the discounted price they're offering, I'm willing to give it a try. If I don’t' like it I can always sell it.

The Gear VR is awesome, even if you accept it just as a novelty. Lots of very cool apps and games. I really miss having one and wish Apple did VR.

So a few days ago I watched last year's Pixel event where Google showed off their Daydream View VR. I didn't really care to watch that part of the video but I did nonetheless. They demoed an app that really caught my attention and that I liked and it was one where its like you're in a planetarium and you look at the stars and point at them to learn more. That really interested me. Would you know if the Gear VR has a similar app?

I don’t know but the S8/note 8 are both compatible with daydream VR.

That sounds really cool by the way though.

Hmm, I'm not sure, I haven't used a Gear VR in probably about a year, since I had a Note 7. I believe you can use the Samsung phones with Android VR apps, there is an app that allows this that's free and allows you to exit out of the Gear VR mode and open any other non Gear app. I can't remember the name of the app, but I'm sure someone on here will chime in. I used it a lot in playing PC games on my Gear VR, yep you read that right!! Pretty awesome playing Fallout 4 and GTA5 on the Gear VR.

Galaxy Note 8 now has the highest-rated Android camera, says DxOMark

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is now tied with the iPhone 8 Plus as the highest-ranked smartphone camera in the world.

It's actually interesting comparing the specific scores. Seems like the Note 8 does better in photos while the iPhone 8 does better in videos:

Playing around with the S8+ i bought to try out. Im confused about all the FP scanner placement talk.
it only takes around 5 times for muscle memory to kick in, not a big for me right now.
Did you try the iris scanner?

It's second nature to me now (S8).

Not yet. My 1st negative is the lock screen. I cant put widgets like MTA times or ESPN on it.
I tried several lock screen replacements, they are either not formatted for the screen or glitch out like crazy or the default home screen appears anyway.

Its a beautiful phone, but I fear software is the downfall.

Another report of even more supply and yield issues? Not sure how reliable this is, but if any of it is true, the X is seriously going to limited. If you think the Pixel/Pixel 2 launches were bad, or the AirPod launches were bad, or even previous iPhone launches were bad, wait til the ship times slip on the X...

Report says Apple iPhone X yield rate drops under 10%; release could be delayed until December

Honestly, I'm a little worried for Apple. There are also new reports of batteries exploding, too. Not sure whether it's a thing or not at this stage yet, and yes, we all know there are tons of iPhone 8's out in the wild given Apple's base and batteries can sometimes just act up in limited cases, but it's definitely still something to keep an eye on. It made front page news on MR: More Incidents Surface of iPhone 8 Plus Devices Burst Open Due to Possible Battery Failure

And now with the continued concerns of the X supply constraints and poor yields? It's going to be a messy launch. To say that Apple fans who want the X will be frustrated could be a huge understatement.

Gonna be a disappointing holiday season if the X is on your list. Then holidays sales for Apple might not reach forecasts if the supply constraints rumors are true.
