After having the Note 8 for a few weeks, I really don't like any of these designs anymore. The X is just a hot mess... the curve on the corners is too much and together with the notch... ugh. The 8 and 8+ just look out of date and the sharp screen corners with curved body isn't a good design. Samsung on the Note 8 seems to have struck a great balance ... the curve of the screen and body corners is just right. Would be great if they eventually shrink the area on top and bottom even more... sure that will come in time.

Personally, I’m finding this micro-examination of the displays exhausting.

Displays have had this sort of color shift to varying degrees for years now yet for some reason, when it’s brought up for the Pixel 2 XL, it’s now the primary benchmark of every display. My iPhone 7 Plus has a color shift off angle, the Nexus 6P has a significant color shift off angle—why wasn’t this level of scrutiny levied against all these devices prior to this?

Im going to stick to my own personal assessment—when I look at a display, do I like what I see? Yes? Great, I’ll keep it. ;)

People need to stop obsessing over details they most likely wouldn’t have noticed if someone hadn’t pointed them out in the first place.

I actually don't mind a little bit of bezels if it means a more balanced design than say the notch of the X or the eye of the Essential phone.

I agree with you, Samsung has struck a beautiful design.

I'm with you...I like a little bezel. I think it is an ergonomic thing for me. I really like my Note 8 bezels.....but anything slimmer will be harder to hold and use because it will be all display.

It's all nonsense. The tech blogging community has run out of anything interesting to say about these devices anymore (The Verge hands on with the Razer phone is one of the most embarrassing pieces I've seen recently). The tech community wants to use these things as stats to argue on behalf of whatever device they prefer because everything is home/away team arguments now.

I agree...but to be fair and balanced....those that ripped the Pixel 2 XL should have the same thing to say about an even more expensive phone.....right?
I mean to charge that much for a phone and have less than stellar display should be called out right? Just as everyone did en mass in the Pixel thread.....

Yup—iPhone should be held to the same standard as all other phones. My own personal take is that examination of ALL of these displays is over the top ridiculous and is critical of things that have existed forever, things the overwelming majority of consumers woundn’t every notice or care about.

Again, just my take. As someone else brought up in one of these threads recently, I’d like to see a little more substance to the usability and genuine functionality offered by these devices, specifically maybe a deeper dive into the software itself.

Since the price of the iPhone X is so much higher, and because Apple waited so long to change their design of the 6sss, and because they are only doing a single size, they should be held to an even higher standard. But what I see in the X discussion threads is the opposite. I hear a lot of excuses and acceptance because Apple is doing some great advancement in the industry and we have to give them time to get it right. The only thing they have advanced on the X is a better facial recognition (in theory, and it remains to be seen if it is better). Everything else to me about the X is an attempt to catch-up after such a long ride of the 6 design.

And I agree with you that the over analysis of the displays is getting ridiculous. When I bought my Surface Pro, there was a lot of hoopla about light bleed. Some people reporting returning their Surface Pro as many as 10 times trying to get a perfect display. I had people arguing with me that mine had light bleed and I was too stupid to see it. Never mind the fact that nearly ever display has some imperfection or issues if you look at it with enough scrutiny and at enough angles. Human sight is a miraculous thing and our eyes adjust to stuff like this in daily use.

I agree and have said so myself in the Pixel 2 thread.
But I find it interesting how some that posted how awful the blue tint was/is on the Pixel 2 XL readily dismiss the same issue on the iPhone X.

I think burn in issue is fair game, but the rest of it was silly. Pixel XL 2 screen is excellent.

And this is my own personal pet peeve: I'm tired of people complaining about the cost of these phones. If folks really think they're overpriced or not worth the money, then go buy a Blu 1 or whatever. But they don't. They want the iPhones, the Pixels, etc because they're excellent devices with the best features on the market. Most of the complaining about money is the same old, same old: anything that costs more than a dollar someone wants to spend is "overpriced".

Yeah, it's already such an immersive, full screen experience. The fact that Samsung made everything black upfront and that it's edge-less on the sides, it really feels like the the silhouette they advertise with:

download-2.jpg

It's a particularly stark contrast to say the Pixel 2 XL's side bezels, which I find abnormally thick. You can make the same case for the iPhone X's thick-ish borders around the entire thing.

There are various ways toward bezel-less / edge-to-edge design. I like Samsung's the best. I understand people who have reservations about the edges, but I find most of the concerns non-issues. Glare isn't a problem, the height is not only fine, but allows for more info (speaking solely about the S8), and it allows for the single most ergonomic phablet smartphone.

All in quite a stunning, beautiful, symmetrical package. ;) I don't need Samsung to go even more bezel-less; keep the symmetry!

iPhone X Is King of OLED Screens: See for Yourself

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/iphone-x-oled-screen-vs-pixel-2-note-8,review-4807.html

It also includes the Pixel 2 XL for comparisons. Although something is wrong with their test imo. It says Pixel 2 XL is brighter than Note 8. Can't wait to get mine though if it's as good as they say

There is something seriously wrong with this analysis. First, they are saying the Note 8 is less bright than the average smartphone. I've had a lot of smartphones and the Note 8 has the brightest display I've ever used... by far. Second, what's with the huge black borders on the middle image on the Note 8. I haven't had a single thing I've done on the Note 8 do that type of bordering. That notch on the X... doesn't get better with age. With a landscape view it looks an order of magnitude more stupid. The last picture they have intentionally made the other phones out of focus and the X in focus? This looks like a contrived story. After seeing the pictures, I'm not going to even waste my team clicking through to read it.

See I don't think they are that thick at all to be honest. On my iPhone 8 Plus...the bezels are just as thick or more than the Pixel 2 XL and they don't get in the way at all. In fact just now while holding my Note 8 and bringing my thumb across the display it registered a touch from my hand. If the bezels were a little larger then that would not happen.
I don't mind top or bottom or side bezels as much as some....i think in some ways they add to the functionality of a device and make it easier to use...

It is all about the user experience rather that the aesthetics for me.....

Glad the screen is good on the iPhone X because the design is trash. Landscape is a mess.

And the article is poorly written. The title doesn't match. The author answers the question "Is iPhone X the best display on the market?" with "depends on what you like"

I actually am too. I think I might actually keep one of the two I've got waiting for pickup. Or at least take it for a test drive. ;)
LOL...I figured you would not be able to resist opening the box and at least trying it out!

Lets see if you can resist and sell it or keep it for yourself!

Look forward to reading your thoughts!

Oh if I open it I’m likely keeping it. :p:D

Then I have to hope the resale market is kind to soften the sting of its price. ;)

Yes I agree, as I said in another thread i'm going to wait for the Displaymate review of the iPhone X before coming to any conclusions.

Have you posted them or one of them up for sale yet? So far, no biters for me. Looks like I'll be opening one up myself! :)

I got shipment notice today. They're on track to arrive Nov 3rd. I might wait a few days to see if any interest develops then, and if not, will open one (or both!) up to play with.

There's very little chance I would keep it though. After taxes, it was ~$1250. That's... absurd.

Another review is saying it's a Galaxy S6 oled panel with boost brightness of 725 nits which contradicts the Tom benchmark. Seems we have to wait for DisplayMate
