iPhone X vs Pixel 2XL

Seeing a huge difference with the shadows on the Pixel. They are absent on the iPhone X

Also the battery life is worse than the non Plus iPhone 8 weirdly enough.
Early reviews indicated this. Remember, iPhone X is a compact (ie not plus) device and behaves as such. It's not a successor to the iPhone Plus line.

@Radan87000 Thanks for the comparison. I'm a little surprised, honestly. The iPhone X is super bright - Almost obnoxiously so in some of the shots. The again, some of them look better on the X.

Mashable brought 2 sets of twins in to see if FaceID would differentiate between the two.

Spoiler Alert:

It didn’t in either case. ;)

CNN also found that Face ID fails evil twin test so possibly a really good disguise could fool it. Face ID false positive rate was originally 1 in 1,000,000 but Apple had to turn it down since it failed on stage demo. Either way it's much weaker than iris scanner's 1 in 1.4 trillion.

The inability for Face ID to work at more extreme angles -- which, again, was something I thought was touted by Apple, no? -- is really disappointing. I thought Face ID would be the one leapfrog technology in the iPhone X, because let's face it, nearly everything else is purely catch up to the competition.

Face ID was the one thing that was supposed to stand out. I mean, there's even a notch because of it.

Maybe I have lower expectations than others but I'm not finding FaceID to be as lackluster as others here. Is it as fast as TouchID on the last 2 gen of iPhone? Nope. But it's not that much slower, not enough where I feel like I'm waiting. I usually swipe up before I even glance at the display so it's opened by the time I'm ready to use it. I've also had pretty good success with using it at angles off from center. I just tapped the screen to wake it while looking at it from probably 30-45 degrees below the display and it opened right up. I tried using it from either side and was successful from roughly the same angles. My Apple Watch is presently re-pairing to it and while it was mounting in a vertical style dock, I woke it in a very dark room from probably 2 feet back and maybe 15-20 degrees off to the right and it opened right up.

Having to swipe every time is admittedly a bit irritating but I have to do more than that (double tap screen or press side wake button, then swipe) to open my Pixel 2 XL every time I don't pick it up and reach around back for the fingerprint sensor while its on smart lock.

Again, these are just my very first impressions while going through the initial setup/updates. We'll see how I feel about it after some more extensive use. I'll check back in later with an update.

There are some similar yeah, but not as cool. I think they're the same ones they introduced in the 6S?
Nothing special anyway.

thanks for the reply.
If it's similar to 6S I think it maybe 'Dynamic wallpaper'
I'm no expert on wallpaper! But I believe there are three types

• Dynamic wallpaper iPhone 6 onwards
• 3D touch live wallpaper
• Live wallpaper as in the Pixel 2 & 2XL

I got to say I'm really digging the lack of home button.
Face ID had worked 100% so far, but I have been in the same setting all night so not an accurate or particularly rigorous test just yet.
But it reminds me of BlackBerry OS currently. And that is an AMAZING thing.
All these reviewers showing how you get into your open apps make it seem very static as they slowly swipe up halfway from the bottom to 'peek' into the open apps them slide right to go into them.

In reality its as if you're accessing your BB Hub, just the opposite way. Just one smooth, quick swipe up and right. Like an upside down L. Goes straight into them. It's perfect.

So far I am really enjoying the experience and the screen is just gorgeous but again, hardly tested yet.

It's not my favourite wallpaper personally...

CgJE0V5.jpg

Not something I would choose anyways. Don't like it on either phone haha.

The difference in aspect ratio is really noticeable in that side-by-side. I'm an old dinosaur in this regard but I really still prefer 16:9 or close to it. :( I really don't like typing on my Pixel 2 XL or iPhone X nearly as much as on my 7 Plus.

See it's funny because going from my XZ Premium to my Essential I have really hated typing and have struggled with typing on it - making so many mistakes.

With the iPhone X, it has been a breeze. I don't know why, I think that grey bar they put in underneath it (a virtual bezel, if you like) really helps me out. I have always enjoyed the Apple keyboard anyway, so that probably goes some way to help.

I'm a few hours in with the X, so here's a few observations:

  • Face ID works really well. The biggest drawback is if it's on a table and you want to glance at something requiring you to open your phone. However, I have encountered the exact same issue with my Pixel XL and Note 8, so that's not really a thing for me. Otherwise my fail rate with Face ID has been at or near zero. Also: the move is swipe up immediately once you raise to wake. It unlocks as your swiping up. It's like your phone isn't locked.
  • Gestures rock. I have no idea why any tech bloggers were suggesting app switching needed some getting used to. They're morons. The move isn't to move up and stop, it's move up midway and swipe right. Boom. Done. And flipping back and forth by swiping the indicator at the bottom is cool.
  • I. Do. Not. Notice. The. Notch. So I'm officially in the camp that it's not a thing. I've watched videos in full screen. It doesn't really register for me.
  • It *is* weird readjusting to a smaller phone after using the Note 8. The software does mostly profile as the smaller iPHone. That might actually be a thing for me, I don't know yet. Typing feels a little cramped, but again I'm so used to the king of the jungle of phones I want to give myself a bit before coming to a firm conclusion.
  • Animojis are cute and I'm already over them. I don't think they're going to be a big deal, but I do think they serve as a kind of proof of concept for developers to think about what they can do with the camera system.

That's about it for now. It's still an iPhone, still uses iOS 11. Downloaded 11.1, so we'll see if it's more stable than the initial release. No idea about battery. It seems worse than the Pixel XL, but I've been using it a ton so dunno yet.

Typing on my Silver iPhone X. Had it opened the moment it arrived earlier today.

Pretty nice so far. Can’t believe how heavy this device feels. Face ID working nicely, but definitely slower than Touch ID, and I can test both since I have an iPhone 6S as well. There’s the slightest momentary pause while you wait to see the lock unlatch.

The notch is what it is. When you get into your content, it’s easier to ignore since the screen is big and nice. It feels amazing using iOS with a more immersive screen. Finally, Apple! Happy to read others are enjoying it, too. This is what people have been talking about — this is that edge to edge experience we’ve been praising. The notch is still kind of bothersome, however, especially from a design perspective. Feels like a mini hood or cover, if you will, always sitting at the top of your screen.

I still find the Pixel 2 smoother and easier to use and type on. I actually saw a stutter with the X when I swiped down on the home screen to do a search. I’ve seen that stutter before on my 6S. Gestures definitely help iOS feel more intuitive and fluid. The ability to swipe left and right to switch apps is terrific; an idea taken from the Chrome Android app where you can do the same swipe along the url line to switch between tabs. Great implementation of that here. It should be evident that hardware does matter. It can lead to software changes that feel better and are quicker. So long physical home button; you will not be missed.

This device is shaping up nicely and is, for the first time in a while, an exciting iPhone to hold and use. It’s about damn time. Even Apple agrees it was damn time to release this, considering this was originally meant for 2018. Good job recognizing the need to get this out to market sooner than later. I probably won’t keep it, but predict many will love it.

iOS is too confining for the type of screen they're going for. If an app isn't optimized for the ratio, you're stuck with a box. Case in point: Amazon Prime Video isn't optimized. So it runs in both letter and Piller box. Thus there is zero advantage to the screen size. And I can't stand the regular iPhone size software.

SO...not for me. Maybe next year when they produce a plus size. Pixel XL 2 wins my daily driver sweepstakes.

It just came out, same issue happened with the iPhone5. It’s not like it won’t get updated.

I'm sure you're right but I find I don't want to get used to using a smaller software profile again. For me it comes down to this: there isn't inherently any advantage to using the X over the Pixel or the Note that makes putting up with items I don't like worth it. Face ID is cool but clearly slower than a good FPS. That doesn't mean it's not the way of the future but for 2017/18 why should I settle?

There is lots good about the X. For me, there isn't anything that leaps over devices I've been using for the last two months.

If only the 5" Google Pixel 2 could copy the Essential/iPhone X screen/body ratio and height without the notch and have panda color option like its bigger bro, I would be all over it.

When you put the s8, X, and Pixel 2 together side by side, you can tell one is painfully outdated. It really is a shame the Pixel 2 isn’t caught up in that regard.

I tried the Pixel 2 at Verizon today. Pretty bland design in my opinion. Bezels look dated already.
