No doubt, especially if it's for work.

Just curious, how often does Apple push out security updates? Google pushes it out monthly, and depending on the carrier/OEM, they try to match that, too (for example, my S7E got all the monthly security updates last year except for two separate occasions), but of course, YMMV when it comes to non-Google devices.

Are Apple security updates as frequent as Google's? I don't seem to get any on my iPhone really.

PS. Samsung has a new commitment for their unlocked devices sold in the US. They plan to keep up with monthly security updates. Theirs will probably come after Google's, but as long as they try to match each month, that'll keep me happy.

I know for sure that Apple doesn't push out security updates as frequently, but I also think that's arguing Apples to, er, Oranges. But I'm more or less talking about the other companies. And not just security updates, which no one is as good as Google at that, but also OS updates. Samsung has their S7/S7 edges updated to Nougat, but not their unlocked US version. That's a joke, in my mind. And doesn't make me feel good for their new "commitment" to updates this year. And regarding updates, Apple did push an update that fixed an issue with 10.3 in just a week or so. It took Google 6 months to fix Bluetooth issues on the Pixel, which may or may not be fixed yet. I don't intend to slam Google or other OEMs, I'm just saying for me and my trust, that lies with Apple.

My hope is the single SKU of the S8 makes it easier for Samsung to update Android software versions, too. It's sad and absolutely baffling that the unlocked S7's didn't get either security patches or Android updates faster than the carrier versions.

I don't think anything that all works together and ties in with each other can ever be seen as a negative.

Until you have to go out of that ecosystem.

I'm more curious if they keep up with OS updates. Samsung almost completely ignores their unlocked models when it comes to OS updates. I mean if the US carriers beat them to Nougat, you know something is seriously wrong. I'd also love to see an unlocked bootloader, but I doubt that will ever happen with them.

I actually think the monthly security patches are more important. But yes, it would be great if they could improve software updates with the single SKU. Even a reasonable timetable would be acceptable as long as they keep to it (max three months).

I totally agree - I hope that it does. But i also don't like going into it without it being a "for sure" thing. I know with Google and Apple that the updates will come fast and furious. Samsung can make all the claims in the world, but they're yet to make good on their promises. I would hate to buy one and then get delayed on everything. I may change my tune once Samsung actually follows through with what they're claiming they'll do.

Interesting new rumor about wireless charging: https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/07/iphone-8-smart-connector/

Rumor: iPhone 8 could feature Smart Connector for ‘wireless’ charging, VR/AR accessories

An unverified rumor from Israeli blog The Verifier claims the next iPhone will feature Apple’s special Smart Connector for inductive ‘wireless’ charging and VR/AR accessories. Apple currently only uses the Smart Connector on the iPad Pro line…

This isn’t the first time Apple’s Smart Connector has been rumored for an upcoming iPhone. Prior to the iPhone 7 debut last year, leaks showed versions of the iPhone 7 Plus ahead of its introduction with the Smart Connector placed on the back. While the overall design was accurate including the dual camera layout, the Smart Connector remains an iPad-only connection.

Actually, this would make sense because it would mean they wouldn't have to redesign the 7S models to be glass backs; they'd only have to add the smart connector pins.

Hm.

Hardly a benefit, IMO, at least in regards to charging. Having to position it just right in a proprietary dock is hardly better than just shoving in the lightning cable. The Sony I had years ago also had pogo pins...BFD. This seems EXACTLY like a classic Apple solution.

Excellent point. I hope this isn't what Apple had in mind for wireles charging. Because not only would they be late to the game, it'd be a worse form of charging.

They did get behind the qi standard though, so hopefully this rumor doesn't prove true.

I put no stock in their 'endorsement' of Qi---the Apple Watch uses Qi but with some proprietary twist. The Apple Watch's hockey puck charger will charge other Qi devices but the Apple Watch itself will only charge with the puck--won't work with other Qi chargers.

I did not know that about the Apple Watch charger. :T

Make Nokia Great Again! HMD official explains how Android will help Nokia return to former glory

Most of the smartphones in the market do not have the Android OS in the way it should be. Vendors are adding a skin on top of the OS. Consumers have the right to have the latest version of the OS and we will be pushing the latest version and the patches as soon as it is available from Google... We and Google will jointly enhance the Nokia brand to put the right kind of inputs into the phone, including Google Assistant

a good start if it does indeed ship with 7.1.1 and delivers on the monthly security update promise.

The last few weeks, I've been going with more iPhone/iPad then anything else. I have three lines on T-Mobile plus a prepaid $30 plan that I keep activated just for the $5GB data included. Previously, I used three of those sims in two S7 Edge phones and a Note 5 plus a 6S+ as my daily.

Now I have three sims in iPhones and one in my blue S7 Edge that I got for $360 in February from T-Mobile. The 6S+ is still my daily but I also now have three Apple watches so I'm kind of loving the whole iOS thing again.

My next phone will be the Note 8 and I will skip the S8+ all together.

I'm on this thing where every other year I skip the iPhone and buy a Samsung phone. This last year, it happened to be four S7 Edge phones (I broke the display on one and replaced it with a new one) and the Note 5. The Note 5 was always a disappointment with it's crappy battery life so it's sat in a drawer more then half of the 1.5 years that I have owned it.

I don't sell my phones because in a couple months, I may go back to getting out those other two S7 Edge phones sitting in my drawer. One of those is the US unlocked version and the other is my original pre-order edge I got a year ago in February. The broken one was also a pre-order.

Anyways, I'm rambling on now.

If there's anything that makes me want to switch back to Android right now, it's iOS notifications. God damn are they dumb. I was just playing a nice game of Star Wars Force Arena and in a crucial stage of the match, when sure enough a big globby notification comes down and takes up 30% of the screen (in landscape) right where I was about to tap. So I hit the freaking calendar notification and am taken there, phone freezes up and takes ca 15 seconds to get back to the game, and so I lose the match. And it happens all the time.

Notifications should be smaller, like they are on Android.

There should be an option to mute them as part of Do Not Disturb.

And so I though wow wait a second maybe I'm just dumb myself, I can just mute all notifications then, while I play! Nope. No option to do that. Have to go into settings for every-freaking-app to turn off notifications for each one. And no, I can't do airplane mode as the game is online pvp.

Sorry just had to vent. But this is one iOS weak spot that every time makes me want to reach for the Android phone I don't have.

You can set do not disturb to be active even when the phone is unlocked. This will mute all notifications other than alarms.

Although I do agree with you that iOS notifications are a mess

Oh my god, thank you for that information!! That makes things much bearable. Incredible that I had looked at that settings page a thousand times without realising that's what that option did. Maybe the title "Silence" was a bit misleading for me as I always have the sound muted anyway.

But yeah, thanks a ton. Apple aren't quite as stupid as I though then.

Meanwhile yes I agree that notifications could still be much better.

Serious question, does the App Store auto update apps or not? I thought it did but I still get badges of apps that are ready to be updated. In my settings I have the auto download apps checked on. Anyone know? Does it only do it at a certain point in the day?

I get smaller notifications but where IOS is far better is non stop notifications.

for me on my S7 edge i had to delete notifications otherwise i would stop getting them. Like on twitter there's a limit before they stop coming through at all.

on my iPhone i could have days and days of notifications when i pull down from the home screen but on my samsung phones? nope i would stop getting twitter notifications without 2-3 hours which is a problem for me

so for this reason to me notifications are better on IOS

for me it only shows apps to update when i go into the app store. otherwise it wouldn't come through

Its seems to me if you can live without iMessage and facetime you can easily switch between android and ios if you want too. So I have ordered a Galaxy S7 Edge to play with for a while because I'm just bored with my iPhone 7 Plus right now and just disabled iMessage and facetime. I go through this faze about this time every year as a matter of fact I actually owned a S7 edge this time last year. I don't really feel like i'm out of the ecosystem at all I can just use different services to do the same things.
