If there's anything that makes me want to switch back to Android right now, it's iOS notifications. God damn are they dumb. I was just playing a nice game of Star Wars Force Arena and in a crucial stage of the match, when sure enough a big globby notification comes down and takes up 30% of the screen (in landscape) right where I was about to tap. So I hit the freaking calendar notification and am taken there, phone freezes up and takes ca 15 seconds to get back to the game, and so I lose the match. And it happens all the time.

Notifications should be smaller, like they are on Android.

There should be an option to mute them as part of Do Not Disturb.

And so I though wow wait a second maybe I'm just dumb myself, I can just mute all notifications then, while I play! Nope. No option to do that. Have to go into settings for every-freaking-app to turn off notifications for each one. And no, I can't do airplane mode as the game is online pvp.

Sorry just had to vent. But this is one iOS weak spot that every time makes me want to reach for the Android phone I don't have.

Totally feel your pain. iOS looked like it was turning a corner in notifications a couple of years ago, hasn't happened. I very much preferred the previous "swipe to reply" for inline responses vs being forced to 3D Touch the screen and create a giant bubble text response, in example. And for some reason, developers just aren't taking advantage of the ability to do this on iOS same as they are on Android. For instance: with Slack, you can reply inline to notifications, you cannot on iOS. Also, I've had issues on and off with reminder apps not notifying me when a date/time is set. It's happened across the board with a few different apps, including Apple's own native Reminders app.

This has been one of the issues I find with iOS that's increasingly pushing me out of the fold. They can keep the bezels just give me a more modern version of your OS already.

a good start if it does indeed ship with 7.1.1 and delivers on the monthly security update promise.

While I'm not a huge fan of Nokia designs, finding them fugly and dysfunctional, this seems like a GREAT move. I hope they have success with it, if only to push the other oems out of this horrible cycle of updates.

I'm always surprised that a company which allegedly values "simple" and "it just works" that their notifications are so god awful terrible. I'd say besides making phone calls, notifications are the primary function of a cell phone these days.

Bring it on, OnePlus. They've made missteps, but they're steadying providing a better and better flagship option.

5 OnePlus 5 rumored features that could give the Samsung Galaxy S8 a run for the money

BTW, they're skipping the "4" name because that's apparently bad luck in Asia (like buildings skipping the 13th floor).

I found this interesting "While we doubt OnePlus has the resources to make a phone quite as sleek and meticulous as the Galaxy S8 right now, it can certainly generate a looker that's on par with the Xiaomi Mi Mix or another eye-grabbing model."

The s8 is a beautiful phone, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Mi Mix. If that was available in the states I would not hesitate one second in buying it over the S8.

There is no law that says you can't use both.

My iPhone 7 Plus will continue to be my daily driver but the S8+ will be my home entertainment device. Depending on the next iPhone Apple is going to have to work hard to get me to upgrade so really the ball is now in Apple's court if they want my money this year. Well technically they still make money off me but you get the idea.

It's just such a pain to keep both in sync. In particular messaging, there is no easy or quick way to transfer existing messages to the new phone. Also sometimes switching between phones like that creates issues with data plans, sometimes I have to call Verizon and have them provision my SIM as an Android or iPhone or my data does not work well, other times there is no issue and there is no rhyme or reason for it.

The other caveat I have to be worried about is watch support, although I guess I could switch out my watch every day as well. I've done the Android/Apple dance with 2 phones and it's definitely a pita, might be easier to do it with an android phone and ipad.

Sounds like everyone is having their own troubles with the fingerprint scanner under the front display. However, Apple has more time to get this resolved.

https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/12/iphone-8-fingerprint-sensor/
Analyst: iPhone 8 fingerprint sensor integrated into screen facing low production yields, Apple may change design

With no bezels, Apple would ideally integrate the fingerprint sensor of the 5.8-inch iPhone 8 into the display itself; this is the most magical solution.

The analyst says Apple is trying to do just that, using an under-glass fingerprint sensor based on Apple’s AuthenTec technology. However, there are currently yield issues with these components. If Apple cannot fix the production bottleneck, Arcuri says it will have to consider using an alternative iPhone 8 design.

He offers three alternatives. Apple could ditch the fingerprint sensor entirely and rely solely on face recognition for biometric authentication. Arcuri says this is not the most unlikely option as face recognition is novel, new and not developed enough to be the only biometric mechanism.

The company could also decide to use a less-futuristic design where the fingerprint sensor is simply moved to the back of the phone. This has actually been rumored before: it would basically mean the current Touch ID sensor is moved from the front of the device to just below the Apple logo on the back.

Finally, Apple could delay the launch of the phone until it can fix the production problems. There have been several reports about the iPhone 8 launching later than September, so this is not completely unsubstantiated.

I really hope Samsung has it all worked out for the Note 8. Sounds like both companies are finding it difficult to get the FPS moved under the display.

Samsung and Apple aren't the only ones:

http://www.phonearena.com/news/LG-H...rprint-readers-courtesy-of-CrucialTec_id93031

LG, Huawei, Oppo phones could soon get on-screen fingerprint readers, courtesy of CrucialTec

What do the fingerprint scanners on LG, Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo handsets have in common? They're all produced by CrucialTec, a biometric solution developer who now claims that it has secured a patent for a transparent fingerprint sensor.

According to the company, the new technology can enhance the touch sensitivity capabilities on a fixed part of a smartphone display panel, allowing it to scan fingerprints. CrucialTec boasts that the new module will benefit from a high production efficiency, as the manufacturing process can be shared with an existing touch screen production line.

Except it will have a smaller screen than even the s8. That's my biggest disappointment and possible reason I'm not getting it. I'd hate to go backwards in screen size.

Guess it depends on what screen Apple allow us. If it's 5.2 usable on the home screen but 5.8 when you watch videos and browse web pages then it's all good.

If it's not then that would be tough for me as a big phone user but I don't think it would put me off as the phone par screen size would have everything I wanted from an iPhone feature wise.

Suppose my thinking will be well I use my iPad so much anything I want to do things on a bigger screen will be done on there.

Just hope they take their time and get it right so we don't need to wait till next year. I'm happy enough with my 7 plus where I would wait to get these features.

Supposed iPhone 8 schematics reveal an LG G6-like device

iPhone-8-LG-G6-like-02.jpg

From the front, this alleged iPhone 8 looks a lot like an LG G6, though the rear and sides are totally different stories. Reportedly, the new handset measures 149 x 72.5 x 7.1, thus being about as large as the G6 (yet a tad thinner). Interestingly, there seems to be a fingerprint scanner on the back of the device, alongside a vertical dual camera - both these details are unusual for an Apple smartphone.

It's important to note that these schematics claim to show an iPhone 8 in its Engineering Validation Test (EVT) phase. This means that it's certainly not a final design, and, depending on what Apple decides - or may have already decided - such an iPhone might never make it to market.

Personally, I don't believe it.

I might be able to deal with it if it's 5.8 full screen. I'm still highly disappointed that there's no plus model. Although I suppose 5.8 is probably closer to the s8+ inflated (IMO) screen size and larger than the regular s8 if they stick to 16:9.

Looks nice, although a rear fp sensor is a bummer. Has anyone extrapolated the screen size and aspect ratio?

My iPhone battery is about to die because of a faulty cable (not the first time an Apple cable is dying on me) which I didn't know about until now, and so my iPhone is dangerously low. I've borrowed someone else's cable because I need to be on the move soon and need to take my iPhone with me, and I just have to reiterate that the lack of quick charge is a huge pain.

Use an iPad charger. Charges the iPhones (Since iPhone 6) pretty much as quickly as Quick Charge does on Android devices.

Faster charging is officially supported with it, just Apple don't include the 2A charger with the iPhone for god knows what reason, especially gauling when you consider the cost of the devices.

The charging speed is the same with ipad charger and regular iphone though, plus model might charge faster.

What a lot of people don't seem to realize about charging is that larger batteries can take a charge faster. A 1700mAh battery can only take 1.7amps. So the larger phone, being 2550, will charge at a higher rate.

Set the phone to airplane mode, it charges faster then as no radios are being used.

It takes 1.7A with the iPad charger
It takes 1A with the iPhone Charger

That's a 70% increase in speed until you hit the point where it begins trickle charging. Once you hit trickle charge, then speed is the same regardless of charger.

Now this sounds more like it: https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/13/iphone-8-sketchy-invisible-front-facing-camera/

New iPhone 8 report & renders claim in-screen Touch ID, 4mm bezels, ‘invisible’ front camera, more

iphone-8-concept1.jpg

Lastly, today’s report claims that the front-facing camera will be “invisible” and “hidden underneath the display.” This is something that we haven’t heard before, but falls in line with the bezel-less design.

  • Front-facing Touch ID beneath the display.
  • 4mm bezels around the entire edge of the device.
  • 2.5D contoured glass on the front and back of the device surrounded by a metal frame.
  • Wireless charging.
  • Same dimensions as the iPhone 7.
  • 5.8″ OLED display.
  • “Invisible” front-facing camera hidden underneath the display.
  • Large power button featuring two points of contact. Reason unknown.

If the full display is usable (ie. the gesture/function area can hide a la the MacOS dock when not in use) and it looks like that, forgoing any curved edges, I could find myself considering this new iPhone. Not holding my breath though.

Well there's no 70% increase in speed, sorry. I have tried with both iphone 7 and previous models. It charges at pretty much the exact speed as with a regular charger.
