These overlapping abbreviations are getting really hard to follow. I think we need to replace AW with something that's unambiguous regarding whether you're referring to the Apple Watch or Android Wear.

My bad.

Android Wear is what I was talking about.

Thought he was talking about Apple Watch because that's what I was referring too.

Bloomberg news corroborates the latest iPhone 8 rumors with OLED display, steel frame, glass back, and vertical back camera.

If Bloomberg is getting behind the rumor, I think it's the real deal. I wonder if these leaks come just at the right time to intercept the galaxy s8 launch.

And I'm sure the leaks and rumors are only just getting started. Finally could be exciting times of the iPhone.

Indeed. I'm personally excited myself. It's been a long time since I've anticipated an iPhone like this. Can't wait to see what Apple brings out.

I still think it's unfortunate that it'll be in a special third tier, higher-priced, and potentially delayed and hard-to-get model, but it's finally something. I hope iOS 11 has big improvements and changes, too. I'm particularly keeping an eye on that gesture-portion of the bottom of the phone to lead to more consistent software experience.

It's also worth noting that if the delay really is happening, it'll go up against the Note 8 and the Pixel 2.

Competition is going to be sweet this year.

I can't get excited for the new iPhone to be honest. I upgrade every time in the first iteration of a new design and Apple screwed that up last year for people like me. This phone should have been delivered last year rather than releasing a facelift iPhone 6S with a couple of tweaks. It means now I'm in a cycle where I get a year old phone for my upgrade.

Least we get IOS 11 first to see what comes with that. A big advantage with apple to have updates like this. Hopefully we get a dark mode.

Question: Is anyone else's iPhone not automatically updating their apps in the App Store? I have "automatic download" turned on for my apps in my Settings menu, yet when I go into App Store every now and then, I see badges for app updates. Whether I'm on data or WiFi, it doesn't seem to auto-update. I have to go into the app and manually click "Update All" to get it going. Shouldn't these download and update automatically?

Or am I just remembering a feature of the Play Store and thinking the App Store does the same?

I think your phone needs to be hooked up to power for them to begin auto updating. Is your iPhone plugged up?

That's what I thought, too. Not sure what's wrong. Everything is checked in the main Settings app to auto download.

Really? I'll try that, but I didn't think that was the criteria...?

@MRU Was your iPhone plugged in just now when you caught an app auto updating?

Actually yes, I just plugged in 20 minutes or so ago.

No way. All these years, I never knew that's what had to happen to have things auto-update. I guess I never noticed!

A little annoyed. Once again, world's most advanced mobile OS not proving to be that advance. Having said that, this isn't as big of a deal as not being allowed to download 100MB apps without WiFi, for example.

just noticed mine is off to automatic download. I'm guessing it's down to download on wifi only to save unneeded wasted GB of your data plan.

Sorry, I was speaking about two separate things:

1) you have to be plugged in apparently to have auto updates work in the App Store.

2) you have to be on wifi to download any app larger than 100mb from the App store.

I guess you'd have to be plugged in and on wifi to auto download an app whose update is over 100mb. Shrug.

Either way, both criterias are annoying.

This is truly annoying and feels archaic. I have 50 gb on my plan, please let me download a freaking 150 mb update if I want. At least make it an option in settings.

Nope, been with Android for a while and I switch back and forth often, but I think I am done for a while with Android. I still have it on my work phone since I can't switch it out till it's time, but my personal phone is a 7 plus red. I am tired of Android O/S and being unrefined. Too many issues still with it.

From The Verge: https://www.theverge.com/2017/4/19/15354444/samsung-galaxy-s8-big-screen-ergonomics

The Galaxy S8 Plus is an ergonomic marvel

... for its size, the S8 Plus is more impressive and defies more expectations than its regular counterpart. Google’s Pixel XL, Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus, Huawei’s Mate 9, and even Xiaomi’s Mi Mix — which also has a bezel-starved display — all feel like oversized bricks compared to the S8 Plus.

As the Verge has been saying in their S8 coverage, Samsung has changed the look of the modern smartphone. It's unfortunate that Apple is expected to give very modest updates to this year's 7S and 7S Plus -- effectively three year old designs being asked to go into a fourth year.

That means two out of the three iPhones from Apple's 2017 flagship lineup will feature this outdated look.

I don't like the look of the the s8 and I sincerely hope the next top-tier iPhone looks like an iPhone and not a slab, at least they (iPhones)have some character.

The consolation is the 7s will make a nice upgrade from 7. Maybe I'll get the 7s+.

I disagree that the Mate 9 and Mi Mix look like oversized bricks. Functionally the screen ratios they have are so much better, of course just my opinion. This is form over function, which I think is ok for some who prefer the narrower, easier to grip phone. But for me function is a larger screen, and that doesn't mean a longer screen like the S8, but a screen which is actually larger horizontally and vertically.

I've had the S8+ side by side with the Mate 9 and physically the M9's screen seemed larger to me. It may really be larger if you take off vertical size on the S8+ to correct the aspect ratio, I'm not sure. The Mi Mix in particular makes EVERY other phone ever made look like an oversized brick, it's amazing how much screen you get with that phone.

So is this a rear fingerprint sensor or a wireless charging connector?

Not for the Mate 9 but the Mi Mix screen to bezel ratio seems to be close to S8 if one doesn't mind the non-symmetric bigger lower chin and having to flip the phone upside down to use the front-facing camera. Personally, I like symmetry and was never a fan of the Sharp Aquos lineage.

I believe the Mi Mix is something like 91% stb ratio, versus the S8+ of 83%. The Mi Mix 2 is supposed to be 93%. Not sure how much of that is marketing and if the true measurements are different.

I can't say I'm a terribly huge fan of the larger chin, and the front camera placement is pretty bad. But the wider aspect ratio would cinch it for me in a second, just to have that much more width on the screen means a lot. I don't believe it's even 16:9, I think it's closer to 17:9. But it's still more functionally useful as I feel the s8's curved edges are bordering on useless, making the effective screen ratio closer to 20:9 IMO.

Still, I mainly took umbrage to the use of the term "oversized brick". I think that term can safely be used with something like the iPhone 7+, but no way could I see it used for the Mi Mix.
[doublepost=1492630175][/doublepost]
For me, a phone that is too wide impairs one handed use.

Yeah, see this is why this entire debate is purely personal preference. I can totally respect that, it's just the way you use your phone. For me having to shimmy up and down such a tall screen would drive me nuts and impair one handed use. If anything I find it easier to reach over horizontally on the 7+ where I still had a good grip on it, versus kind of having to balance the S8+ to get to the top of the screen, just felt like the S8+ wanted to slip right out of my hand. If the 7+ just got rid of all its bezels it would be the perfect size IMO.

While not my cup of tea, the s8 is an incredible phone and I hope it sells a ton, if just to make sure Apple knows they have strong competition.

Hoping it's a wireless charger. But I'm still hesitant about the function bar, and some of us may wish for a rear mounted fp sensor if the function bar ends up badly incorporated.
