I expect the iphone to remain that way and not look like a "generic slab". IMO, Apple is not going to look like the competition. Change the iphone around a bit, but it will be recognizable as an iphone. And we won't know until Apple announces it it in Sept.

Remove the home button and it isn't. Only the shape remains. And that's not a bad thing because I want a dramatic design change.

https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/24/kgi-...-component-upgrades-cause-supply-bottlenecks/

KGI: iPhone 8 mass production delayed to October/November as major component upgrades cause supply bottlenecks

KGI blames several ‘significant hardware upgrades’ in the iPhone 8 for the delays. This includes a custom OLED display panel, a custom Apple A11 10-nanometer SoC, an all-new designed 3D Touch module and 3D sensing cameras.

Moreover, KGI has a more pessimistic outlook about the iPhone 7s models (iterative updates to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with internal component upgrades contained in the same chassis design) than before. Full-screen smartphones from Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi will make Apple’s lower-end phones less appealing.

Again, exciting stuff about the iPhone 8. Just a shame it'll be so late to the party, with a higher cost, and be super limited in supply.

And the iPhone 7S models will be flagship devices with dated design and features.

Good read: https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/24/iphone-8-bleeding-edge-approach/

Comment: With the iPhone 8, Apple appears to be tearing up its own rulebook

When we first started wondering what Apple might be planning for its 10th anniversary iPhone, many commentators were dismissive of the very idea. Apple does not, they said, do anniversaries. It launches things on its own timescale, when it’s good and ready.

Yet with the iPhone 8, the company seems to have taken the decision to tear up the rulebook in order to produce a radically different iPhone this year.

Now, that may be coincidence. It may simply be that the company recognized that the market had moved on. By 2014, everyone else made larger iPhones and Apple was eventually left with no choice but to join the party. In 2017, everyone is making near-bezel-free smartphones, and it may simply be that Apple realized it has to do the same or risk its new phone being dismissed as behind the curve.

But whatever the reason, it is a new approach.

I, for one, welcome Apple's new approach. It's about time they kick their design and technology into higher gear. Hopefully by 2018, we can see Apple extend this year's iPhone 8 features across the entire flagship lineup. That way, people who want a larger device can have that option, instead of having to get the 7S Plus.

I also think with Apple finally releasing a device that can compete more toe-to-toe with the competition in the iPhone 8, people will see the 7S models for what they really are: not top tier flagship devices. I'm sure they'll still sell very well, however.

4-way camera shootout from the Verge:
http://www.theverge.com/tech/2017/4...sung-galaxy-s8-vs-iphone-7-google-pixel-lg-g6

SMARTPHONE CAMERA SHOOTOUT: GALAXY S8 VS. IPHONE 7, GOOGLE PIXEL, AND LG G6

DOES SAMSUNG’S NEWEST SMARTPHONE CAMERA ECLIPSE THE COMPETITION IN A MEANINGFUL WAY?

Short answer? It doesn’t.

CONCLUSION

The S8 doesn’t have any clear photographic advantage over the Pixel. Maybe it will if it ever finds a way to use Bixby for more than just shopping or AR for more than just face filters. Right now, though, the Pixel simply captures better photos more often than the rest. It produces richer detail across the entire image, and it does this regardless of lighting.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the LG G6. I think LG applies more aggressive post-processing to its images than the competition, but it’s not so aggressive that I’d hate the images I was getting out of my G6.

What surprised me the most is how the iPhone now feels a generation behind. It was harder to see last year when we pit the iPhone 7 against the Pixel and the less capable S7. But the S8, along with the Pixel and the G6, illuminates the extent to which Apple has fallen behind

I've been getting nothing but compliments on the pictures I took in Dublin on the G6 as I uploaded them full res to social media. Everyone was convinced I was using a DSLR.

With all smartphone cameras the operator of it has a significant bearing on the quality output of the camera results also.

I switched for the S8. Last android phone I had was the Galaxy S6.

Impressive device. Though I'm looking forward to WWDC as a glimpse of what to expect from the next iPhone. I have no tech or brand loyalty one bit. I'll switch at the drop of a hat.

You could take a picture with an iPhone 4S and likely get nothing but complements. :p

I agree to a point......but a pics from one smartphone to the next should not be night and day different. Especially side by side. I just point and shoot.....not a great photographer by any means. A smartphone camera should be able to get great shot from point and shoot. If people want to edit and play around with settings then a DSLR is better for that...not saying a smartphone can't do it though.

Yeah but what I mean is that if you can give someone a tool, it doesn't make them a craftsman.

The same tool in everyone's hands will provide different results based on the persons skills be them natural, trained or non existent.

I've seen many photos from folks with iPhones and S7's that are pretty terrible even though they think the image is good. There comes a point where artistic skill and a natural eye, an understanding of rules of composure etc, will invariably mean that two folks, one with the skill, the other without both taking a photo of the same subject with auto mode the end result would likely still look better from one over the other.

The Verge: https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2017/...erriam-webster-sheeple-definition-iphone-ipad

‘Sheeple’ is now in the dictionary, and Apple users are the example

This morning, Merriam-Webster gleefully tweeted a new addition to its online dictionary: “sheeple,” or “people who are docile, compliant, or easily influenced.” You might not immediately draw a connection to one particular proclivity over another, but Merriam-Webster takes the liberty of quoting CNN technology columnist Doug Criss.

“Apple's debuted a battery case for the juice-sucking iPhone — an ungainly lumpy case the sheeple will happily shell out $99 for,” the example reads. It’s from a 2015 news roundup Criss published on CNN’s website, which Merriam-Webster seems to point to as a prime example of the popular modern-day use of the term. Sheeple dates back to 1945, according to the dictionary entry, most likely as a derogatory term for helpless followers of consumer trends of the time. Nowadays, however, it’s more likely to poke fun at blind followers of the iPhone maker.

You’d think that characterization might not irk your average Apple fanboy — another Merriam-Webster term — days if not for the the company’s rather peculiar product mishaps and design misfires over the last couple of years. As Criss pointed out at the time, there’s the bulging and ugly iPhone battery case. Yet there’s also the mouse that can only be charged upside down and the Apple Pencil stylus that must regain power from the Lightning port of an iPad.

What?!! Is there a chance we get into trouble using this word here. He he..

A big part of why I dislike iOS is the lack of a consistent back navigation. I'm hoping the function bar is Apple's first step at solving this.

My only question is, how would you return home in an app if the function bar is all buttons relating to the app only?

Makes me think they may be taking pieces of the MacBook toucher interface and somehow integrating that into an iPhone with this function area.

I agree though, as I LOVE the back button and dedicated multi task button in recently switching from iPhone.

My guess is it'll work similarly to the function bar on the Macbooks, too. I guess the center portion can always be a virtual home button when you're in an app.

I have to say, the renders look incredible. I really hope it looks like that, and I would not mind having touch idea on the power button if the rumors are true and they can't get it into the screen.

Not a chance. You think they can cut holes in the OLED like a piece of paper for earpiece, camera and sensor?
The top will have bezel and so does the bottom to balance out.

Am I the only one that thinks the top of the front looks weird with the sensors "dipping" into the top screen? Will those top two corners show stats, like time, battery, etc. only? What about when watching content or playing games? Is it just me or is that going to get weird?

I'd wager anything that that irregular top bezel would never happen on an iPhone.

Highly doubtful of screen speaker and sensor cutouts. Once companies like Synaptics deliver in-screen fingerprint sensor it's just a matter of time before we see other sensors in-screen. They've already hinted at the possibility with transparent display demo.

As for the overlapping home button interfering with function bar they can wipe up/down gesture to show/hide function bar.
