Well said! I personally would say the S8 is a nice looking phone. The leaked photo of the next iPhone isn’t that nice. The front of the phone kind of reminds me of the Motorola Droid RAZR M for some reason but I can’t place why.

Funnily enough the S8 has better symmetry and overall shape than the iPhone this time around.

If you read those, nobody really knew anything. And if you believe in rumors you probably believed these and were very disappointed.

https://readwrite.com/2011/10/04/iphone_rumors_wrong/

We knew absolutely everything. The Hey Siri part is common sense as The Apple Watch had it months before the iPhone did.
You only believe you knew everything. You didn't know about the beefiness of the soc or the low power cores in the a10. Hey someone got the name of the a9 right. I'll bet the a11 will be in the 7s or iphone x edition.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/16...-apple-rumor-mill-got-right-and-what-it-didnt

You can put out as many excuses that you like. At the end of the day, TouchID used to unlock the phone seamlessly when it was inside my pocket and I was already up and running typing iMessage the second my eyes turn to the screen.

With FaceID I will have to stare at the phone to unlock it and when I reach for the phone in pitch darkness it wont even open as it probably cant scan my face.

All this is a list of negatives which is why the Note 8 opted to put that sensor in the back as function over form.

Apple cant figure out how to put the fingerprint sensor under the screen like they planned so they are going for form over function. TouchID may very well return in the S cycle once Apple figures out how to put it under the swcreen
You can spin this anyway you want. You still haven't explained the contents of the apple whitepaper on security for the iphone x edition, other than repeat the same verbiage. As far as it all pans out we will have to wait for the reveal or you can believe the rumors are gospel. Either way it's not official until apple says it is.

Yeap, just as expected you deliberately back track, you go from stating 'these things were not known before launch' to 'these story's were only 1 month before launch'...

You carry on, I'll go back to ignoring your posts...
Because it's real easy to leak something once millions of phones are in the process of being manufactured as opposed to the guessing game that goes months before and then say you already knew it? Throw enough guesses and someone will be right. Unfortunately for apple there is nothing they can do about corporate espionage, but this was within a few weeks of the reveal. Anything that comes out now about the iphone x edition probably is the truth, but apple seems to be playing cat and mouse.

Carry on, I'll ignore your posts as well and we'll both be happy.:)

It's a report from the Apple suppliers which turned out to be correct. So yes it was very much known before launch.

Also why post an article from 2011? The rumour scene has dramatically changed since then. Heck the iPhone was the only phone to get at that point.

. So unless and until every small detail about the iPhone 8 leaks including the exact clock speed of the GPU we don't know anything . Got it

Nothing about the 7S leaked so we don't know anything about it. Got it.

You really don't know if those incorrect rumours were really incorrect because Apple tries out multiple ideas during testing and those were tried at some point.

The back TouchID rumor about the iPhone 8 will turn out to be false on the final product but that doesn't mean the idea wasn't considered at some point and which was leaked to us.

I am not a security researcher. I am a consumer who is very much affected by the fact that convenience has been lost. FaceID does NOT work the instant I grab my phone or in pitch darkness which means convenience has been lost.

The Note 8 already has this sensor so we already know it's disadvantages.

From a macro perspective the point of all rumours (both correct and incorrevt] is that we know the features about the final product and they do that splendidly. Nothing was a surprise to me at the 6s 7 or 8 reveal as it was all a subset of the rumor box

Right 6 years later, for some of them, for others we don't and others are pure guesswork.. So it shows how far back apple thinks about things. Posting from the past seems to in vogue.

While that can be true, we still don't know until apple presents it to us. Guessing is fun, pretending you know I guess is also. I don't believe anything until the reveal.

How can you even know how you've been affected by a mythical phone that hasn't been announced? And you are assuming Samsung === Apple?

The old saying the devil is in the details comes to mind. Yeah, you knew about the shape the name of the soc, etc. The surprise at the recent reveals is how much apple has managed to actually conceal. But now I was not surprised at the form factor, cpu name or phone name either. And I remember some of these "leaks" came out two days prior to the reveal one year. But they were still rumors until apple announced it.

Looks like Apple might be using the sleep/wake button to activate Siri on the iPhone 8. Very similar to the bixby button.

Siri is still crappy compared to Google now. Don't know how many times when my friend asks Siri a question and she doesn't understand and just doesn't work well or just gives a link. When i whip my phone out and Ask Google now and it tells me the answer. I don't even use Allo. Don't like it as much as GN.

Google assistant is the best by far.

Agreed, Google Now is great!

We know the defining features of every release and thats all we need to know. I know everything about the iPhone 8 which is relevant to my purchase decision

That's about it, you either know or your don't know. Or you believe you know.
I dont look at the cores in a CPU,or how much the GPU is clocked at, whats the RAM speed at, whats the exact mah of the battery, who made the camera lens before buying a phone nor do I suspect the majority of Apple customers.

If I told my mom that the reason I upgraded to a 6s was because the A9 SOC had 2 low power cores and a reduced nm she would look at me as if I was crazy

While that can be true, we still don't know until apple presents it to us. Guessing is fun, pretending you know I guess is also. I don't believe anything until the reveal.
I would much prefer real time updates of what Apple is doing behind the scenes than nothing.

How can you even know how you've been affected by a mythical phone that hasn't been announced? And you are assuming Samsung === Apple?

Because its got FaceID which has already been implemented in the Note 8 and we know everything about it. An iris scanner, facial recogniton and fp sensor perform a fundamental function and each has fundamental weaknesses which cant be solved. FaceID doesnt work in pitch darkness or the moment you grab the phone. TouchID solved both problems but doesnt work when your hands are greasy or wet. So both technologies are needed to complement each other

You still havent bothered to tell me one useful feature about the 6s which is relevant to a purchase decision. No of cores, ram speed, whats the architecture is all geek talk to me.

They could have achieved the same effect using 3DT on the function bar. It really seems to me that maybe 3dt is not implemented in the 8 or they no longer care about it just like how they removed 3DT for app switcher in iOS 11

Why is everyone crying about prices? Hey that's our fault, we are the consumers who purchase these devices. No not all of you, but you know who you are, myself included. If you don't like the price then go pick up a Motorola or Huawei, or one of the many flagships from last year, perfectly good phones.

Personally I don't really look at the price because I've resigned myself to always having a monthly lease payment. Yes I want the newest phone every year and I have no issue with that. Same with my vehicle, I lease so I can write it off on my business and also so I can have a new car every year, I don't sit and gripe about the price. So my iPhone 8 will be an extra 9 or 10 bucks a month, I can think of a lot of things I pay extra for every month that I don't truly need. Is Apple gouging me? Well, they are charging me what they think I will pay, and you can't blame them as a for profit company. Plus you really aren't paying that full price if you trade your phone in every year, or if you simply sell it privately.

With that said I can TOTALLY understand if you just want to buy a phone, pay it off fully and keep it forever, nothing wrong with that and you are a hell of a lot smarter than I am financially. If you are ok keeping the phone forever then just finance it and your pain will be over in 24 months.

Nice. Hope they also allow double tap to quick launch the camera. It's one of the best features of Android devices. I can launch into my camera faster than with my iPhone.

I'm back to being frustrated the hell out of text input on the iPhone. Also lusting for the Note 8 screen which finally isn't only longer but also in fact wider than the screen on my 7 Plus. I'm getting tired of iOS' limited and awkward notifications and widget functionality. And the iPhone 8 Edition so far doesn't excite me at all, I can't for the life of me see how that top of the screen cutout will be anything but annoying (yes, I'm one of those OCD victims who couldn't stand the Moto 360 because of its 'flat tire' :p) even if they do have a knack for making the unexpected work.

So yeah, I'm considering Android again, and the Note 8 in particular. Unless the Apple event next week manages to shock my socks off - shudder, my wallet!

For the same reasons - and also because iOS has been just boring and because I cannot justifiy the anticipated price of over 1000€ for that handy - I'm looking to switch to S8 / Windows 10.
I'm using Windows 10 for my work since two days and I have to admit that I like it - the full screen mode or tablet mode is really efficient, something that Sierra cannot manage so (I hate the lack of the dock in full screen apps!!).

I know nothing about the iphone x edition which is relevant to my purchase decision. It all boils down to individual belief in rumors. I'm sure a lot of them are true, it's just picking which ones are.

Well real-time rumors, because it's not official until the reveal.

Just admit you don't know, probably very few people here know, unless Tim Cook has an alias on MacRumors and is posting to throw off you guys.

You still havent bothered to tell me one useful feature about the 6s which is relevant to a purchase decision. No of cores, ram speed, whats the architecture is all geek talk to me.
Whose making the purchase, you or me? We clearly have different mindsets when it comes to why we are purchasing/upgrading a new phone. To me I wanted the 6s after the reveal and I got a chance to see how it works; iow, form and function. I'll have that same type of thinking with the iphone x and 7s and make a decision on how they work and what they do. But it's nice knowing the camera is better, better battery life, useful things the phone can do to enhance my interaction.

Fairly disappointed that they may not have touchid and faceid. Feels like a big miss. And if they add touchid back next year it'll be even worse. They'll discontinue the iPhone 'x' 1 year after release. iPad 3 all over again.

Why is everybody excited about the sleep button launching Siri!? Seems like common sense to me and not a big deal either way. Idc if I have to flick the camera to launch Siri as long as I know how to do it the twice a year I need it.

I do realize nothing is final until next week but so far I'm underwhelmed and considering Note again. I'm sure Apple won't miss my money but if the Note 8 is the same price, wouldnt you feel like you're getting more for your money from that purchase if the iPhone turns out as rumored?

The ears thing will take some getting used to. It's way more noticeable than the Essential "eye."
[doublepost=1504538602][/doublepost]
Wow, that is terrible. I really thought Apple would have given some thought to how that top cutout would look aesthetically. It really should be black all the way across regardless of what app is open. Apps should remain independent of the status bar.

I don't care about absolute symmetry -- like we were taught to care by Apple -- but I agree, the "ears" are distracting.

If the roles were reversed and it was a non-Apple OEM that was releasing something like the ears we see in the iPhone 8, I'm certain many, like Rene Ritchie, would be calling it out for the lack of symmetry. And if it were Apple that released something like the infinity display with better symmetry, they would be singing it praises. Just a hunch.

I get the reaction with the white background for sure. People will get used to it though and on black backgrounds shouldn't be an issue.

Just glad to see no more wasted space,

Well, I'm on the fence once again. While I do like my OnePlus 5, my main SIM is currently back in my iPhone 7 for the more reliable camera and because of me losing confidence in the OnePlus devs once again (I saw how they had implemented the Secure Box functionality, and it seems like the amateur hour is anything but over).

The OP5 does offer dual-SIM, but it looks like my main SIM's signal has improved a bit here, so it's not currently such a deal-breaker it used to be.

The OP5 also offers me mobile payments and NFC goodies such as real-time check of my travel card's balance and active tickets. However, now they have promised Apple Pay in Finland before the end of the year, so depending on which banks join in, the mobile payments issue could be sorted out. Also NFCKit in iOS 11 could help with the other NFC uses. We'll see.

iOS, on the other hand, has some niceties to offer. Even though my Huawei Watch is more stylish than my Apple Watch, the Apple Watch works better as an activity tracker and it's far easier to put in the charger and actually have it start charging the watch. Our TV has both the current Apple TV and a Nexus Player hooked onto it, and with the App Store tvOS just hit it out of the park. I should actually unplug the Nexus Player as it's used pretty much never. iOS devices work nicely with the Apple TV and have an app for Android TV as well. In contrast, Android devices unfortunately (and somewhat unfairly) cannot control the Apple TV in a meaningful manner. AirPods are also nice, and while they do work also with Android, some key conveniences are gone. However, I can live with other Bluetooth headphones as well.

However, if I stick with iOS, I think I'll be either using my iPhone 7 a little bit longer or getting the 7s Plus for the dual camera. The 8 doesn't look too enticing (for now, but things can change on the 12th) and I'm more than a little bit afraid that this is them announcing especially the European pricing:

giphy.gif

Then again, I'm also a little bit enticed by the Nokia 8, but it's also having its initial problems especially with Bluetooth and that's a bit scary. iOS 11 is also looking like a borefest on the iPhone while being close to a gamechanger on the iPad, but I can definitely find use for some of the features such as the document scanner and file management. Anyway, let's see what the next week brings. Maybe I'll just end up even more torn :p

EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot about Pokemon Go, but remembered it thanks to the S8 thread. For me the iPhone is a much better device for Pokemon Go especially when legendaries are involved. I totally ruined a Moltres raid by having just my OP5 with me. I blew at least half of my throws thanks to occasional stutter despite having killer hardware and a mediocre screen protector. ARkit in iOS 11 can only make it better.
