How will it be the iPad 3 all over again?

While I don't think the analogy is a perfect match for this scenario, I think what he's implying is that iPhone X customers will be shortchanged one generation later with a much better implementation of the phone. The iPad 3 was released in March 2012, with a new 'retina display' but was discontinued only 7 months later when the iPad 4 was announced, providing a new processor, better battery life and the lightning connector.

Yeah if an iPad has to be mentioned surely it's the iPad 4. The 3 had a retina screen and was a good improvement to the iPad 2. My daughters 3 is still going strong!

I mean the iPad 3 was only out for seven months, but I’m not sure if I’m missing something or not so that’s why I asked.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense now!

Sorry for the confusion folks. Not a perfect analogy, but you get what I meant now at least.

Well, I'm on the fence once again. While I do like my OnePlus 5, my main SIM is currently back in my iPhone 7 for the more reliable camera and because of me losing confidence in the OnePlus devs once again (I saw how they had implemented the Secure Box functionality, and it seems like the amateur hour is anything but over).

The OP5 does offer dual-SIM, but it looks like my main SIM's signal has improved a bit here, so it's not currently such a deal-breaker it used to be.

The OP5 also offers me mobile payments and NFC goodies such as real-time check of my travel card's balance and active tickets. However, now they have promised Apple Pay in Finland before the end of the year, so depending on which banks join in, the mobile payments issue could be sorted out. Also NFCKit in iOS 11 could help with the other NFC uses. We'll see.

iOS, on the other hand, has some niceties to offer. Even though my Huawei Watch is more stylish than my Apple Watch, the Apple Watch works better as an activity tracker and it's far easier to put in the charger and actually have it start charging the watch. Our TV has both the current Apple TV and a Nexus Player hooked onto it, and with the App Store tvOS just hit it out of the park. I should actually unplug the Nexus Player as it's used pretty much never. iOS devices work nicely with the Apple TV and have an app for Android TV as well. In contrast, Android devices unfortunately (and somewhat unfairly) cannot control the Apple TV in a meaningful manner. AirPods are also nice, and while they do work also with Android, some key conveniences are gone. However, I can live with other Bluetooth headphones as well.

However, if I stick with iOS, I think I'll be either using my iPhone 7 a little bit longer or getting the 7s Plus for the dual camera. The 8 doesn't look too enticing (for now, but things can change on the 12th) and I'm more than a little bit afraid that this is them announcing especially the European pricing:

Then again, I'm also a little bit enticed by the Nokia 8, but it's also having its initial problems especially with Bluetooth and that's a bit scary. iOS 11 is also looking like a borefest on the iPhone while being close to a gamechanger on the iPad, but I can definitely find use for some of the features such as the document scanner and file management. Anyway, let's see what the next week brings. Maybe I'll just end up even more torn :p

EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot about Pokemon Go, but remembered it thanks to the S8 thread. For me the iPhone is a much better device for Pokemon Go especially when legendaries are involved. I totally ruined a Moltres raid by having just my OP5 with me. I blew at least half of my throws thanks to occasional stutter despite having killer hardware and a mediocre screen protector. ARkit in iOS 11 can only make it better.

How will ARKit make it better?

If Apple don't mention anything about TouchID on the iPhone 8 at the keynote it's safe to say it's coming back next year once they figure out how to implement it under the screen.

How will ARKit make it better?

Well they demoed it back when iOS 11 was revealed. It should detect surfaces much better so that the pokemon will be sitting on whatever surface is shown on the camera instead of just superimposing it semi-randomly on the picture. Granted, it's mostly a visual detail, but those matter as well.

But it will still be a poorly coded app that sucks down battery. Maybe it'll perform even worse and suck more battery with the additions.

As long as ARKit is not cross platform compatible then it is doomed to fail.

That's a failing on the part of the app, in my opinion.

Yeah well, heavy use of the GPS is often taxing on the battery. Of course it would be nice if the game were easier on the battery, but the very nature of being location-based makes that one somewhat challenging to achieve. Luckily there's a workaround (powerbanks) available in the meantime.

It's not going to be cross-platform, but neither is Google's Android equivalent ARCore. I think both ARKit and ARCore will be utilized in their respective platform versions of games and apps, but guess which one sees its potential installed base jump quite high next week or whenever iOS 11 is actually released? ARCore requires Android 7.0 or newer, so it's still a bit of a wait until ARCore is as extensively supported in the current installed base as ARKit is going to be when it becomes available with iOS 11.

Yeah, Apple’s never had any success with anything that’s not cross platform compatible.;)

True. Apple can afford to ride solo and be fully vertical with ARKit given the number of iOS devices it sells a year as a captive audience.

I know nothing about the iphone x edition which is relevant to my purchase decision. It all boils down to individual belief in rumors. I'm sure a lot of them are true, it's just picking which ones are.
A curved Edge bezelless OLED display,Iris/Face scanner, Glass Back,Camera with AR support. That's all I need to know and I can tell you right now these are guaranteed on the final model. Now where is the preorder page?

And I look at cores, gpu, ram speed, how much etc. If I told my mom the reason I upgraded because the screen was different she would look at me as if I was crazy.
The analogy doesn't work nearly as well because there is a night and day difference between an OLED display and an LCD display. Its like a completely different phone. Even someone with 8 power glasses can sppot the difference.
In fact, your favourite Apple channel EverythingApplePro admitted in his latest video that the Note 8 display made his iPhone 7 Plus feel like an ancient phone

Well real-time rumors, because it's not official until the reveal.
Apple wont tell us their test ideas and these are the only sources to get them

Just admit you don't know, probably very few people here know, unless Tim Cook has an alias on MacRumors and is posting to throw off you guys.
I already know because the face sensor is on the Note 8 and it has a fundamental problem trying to authenticate in pitch darkness. And if that wasn't enough, the face scanner will not work as fast as the fp sensor because it needs to authenticate your face instead of a finger which you are already holding your phone with. Hence that's a feature loss right there

Whose making the purchase, you or me? We clearly have different mindsets when it comes to why we are purchasing/upgrading a new phone.

From an objective view point the 6S is nothing but a 6 with 3D Touch, a better camera and a spec bump. Heck even the 7 was a better upgrade.

I'd otherwise agree, but one of those bumped specs was doubling the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. Especially in the later stages of the phone's lifecycle it's starting to matter quite a bit.

Well I'm waiting to see the camera, architecture, battery life and overall functions before I hit that preorder button. After all it ain't fact until Apple announces it.

There is not a night and day difference between them which is why my mother would think I'm crazy. As far as everythingapplepro it's his phone not my phone.

Sure the rumor mill, but it still ain't official until Apple says so.

You can't know anything because there are no specs on apples website. Good job on forming a conclusion without any facts.

This type of fallacious reasoning can be applied to any manufactured product. And heck yes the 7 was a darn good upgrade, equal to the upgrade of the 6s which is why I bought the 7 after the 6s.

That used to be the case in the past. No longer though. The iPhone 8 battery will obviously last more than the 7S Plus and 7S because it costs more. It will be superior to the 7S and the current gen in every way possible

There is. The curved egde bezelless OLED display is the reason I am even contemplating the phone. Had it gotten an LCD display theres no way I would pay $1300 for it

As far as everythingapplepro it's his phone not my phone.

The guy has tons of 7 plus with him and his conclusion was that the Note 8 display makes the iPhone 7 display ancient. An Apple fan channel at that. Also corroborated by Displaymate which continues to hail the Samsung display on the Note as the best display on the planet yet again

It was already officially tested by Apple

Has or has not TouchID been removed? This late in the game its obviously true

This type of fallacious reasoning can be applied to any manufactured product..

Does not apply to the iPhone 8. Its got the Android "spec sheet" as you put it. Most likely the first real upgrade to the iPhone since 2007

How much longer? How big is the battery? What is the screen on time, stand by time?

There isn't in my opinion and I buy what I think is best.

It's my opinion it doesn't and I buy what I think is best(hate to be a broken record but...). Isn't this the same guy you accused of tampering with YouTube videos?

Can i Authenticate Apple Pay? Can i authenticate App Store purchase? Can I authenticate to apps? If the answer is yes, I don't care about the method only that I can securely and easily.

It's surely apt for the iPhone x edition. It's the first real upgrade since 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016...

You can prefer whatever you want, but OLED is vastly superior to LCD.

I've seen that said a lot of here. I'm one of those people who shrugs their shoulders on this point though as I don't study screen quality with any detail when using a device. When they are dimmed to 30% I can't tell the difference. Not that this matters though to me, I wouldn't argue either way :)
