It's a shame: my iPhone 6 is with iOS 11 (last beta) just too slow and the next iPhone is according to the leaks for me just ugly and too expensive!

I'm considering to try the S8. For now, I found Windows and the Surface a (good!) revelation after 10 years Mac and then iPads.

I hope those of you having issues with the iOS 11 Beta on the 7 Plus are reporting bugs to Apple in the feedback app :)

The 7 Plus is more than powerful enough to handle iOS 11 (& 12) like a champ. I’ve seen videos of the SE doing great on iOS 11, so I’m sure they’ll work out the kinks.

Running beta on your main phone is never a good idea. You have to expect issues when downloading beta.

How bright is a LCD screen with always on display. I can have a pitch black picture taking up my entire iPhone screen, and it's still pretty bright in the dark. In fact in the dark that black picture has an awful contrast ratio because it is backlit. It's just my opinion, but always on display and LCD don't belong in the same sentence.

The G6 screen with AOD has great black levels and really even backlighting with no light bleed. Verging extremely close to AMOLED black. So it is dependent entirely on the quality of the panel and the backlight.

Except review sites like Displaymate are rating the AMOLED panels in the Samsung Note 8 as the best screen they have ever tested with Data to back it up. Even without full RGB the latest Samsung Panels are besting other displays in all areas. Its really the end of the argument as far as i'm concerned.
Yes they rate that particular display the best display on a device currently. I have never argued against the quality of Samsung's Super AMOLED screens.

But importantly and what people are constantly failing to understand or grasp is that even if that particular screen has been awarded the title by displaymate, it doesn't make a blanket statement that AMOLED is automatically better than LCD true which is what is asserted on this forum.

The constant assertion is simply fallacious. But trying to discuss this with folks armed with a small understanding of the technology, but a fixed opinion because of their own personal preference regardless, is pointless.

I'm happy you have made up your mind. But your mind does not make something universally true or fact. Period.

I totally agree with the fact that not all OLED panels are equal, the POLED panel in the new LG V30 is shocking in terms of uniformity. However If you put the best OLED panel available (Note 8) up against the best LCD panel (iPhone 7) the Note 8 wins in almost every measurable way.

Then you have TVs which are another kettle of fish altogether, the input lag on the current LG OLEDs is still rubbish and the reason ive not moved to an OLED TV yet. I have not made up my mind based on facts ive made up, ive based it on reputable reviews and a decent understanding of both technologies and as it stands Samsung are making the best phone displays, period. You only have to look at the fact Apple are moving to Samsung OLED tech to see this is true.

I don’t get it. We are just 6 days away from GM. The iPhone 8 already has a prior version of iOS 11 already installed on it. The GM is not going to magically run better in all instances than the beta in just 6 days.

This home button delay is inexcusable and I can tell it’s not going to be fixed in the GM as well as people have been complaining about it since Beta 1 and it was never fixed.

Well in theory it should improve through each beta and while it's near the end it is still a beta. Even when the public release is out there can be issues after all. Sometimes it takes an update or two after to be flawless for some people.

The GM is however officially supported by apple support. Beta is not.

You have no idea what will or won't be fixed in the GM.

Well if the 7S and 8 have this delay it would be confirmed that it’s an unintentional bug. But if they don’t I don’t expect it to ever be fixed.

Also TouchID is also not fast as on iOS 10. That also needs to be fixed.

That's my point entirely. I never argued that the best of AMOLED (currently as we know Note 8) isn't the best, merely the assumption about an OLED screen being automatically better was false.

Outside of Samsung's Flagship Galaxy and Note devices of the last couple of years the quality of AMOLED drops considerably, if you think the V30 is bad then the Moto Z Force 2 will leave you traumatised. Even Samsung's panels used in other devices are no way near as good quality such as the Pixels, which have good screens but not great ones with all the flaws of the technology evident (uniformity, outdoor visibility, colour tint when adjusting brightness levels, reports of burn-in etc).

But despite that we get folks here who will just declare OLED superior without actually understanding why outside of a small handful of devices with great AMOLED screens the story of OLED tells quite a different tale.

I'm not saying OLED isn't the future, merely that it can not be DEFINITIVELY asserted as the best until we stop getting panels which aren't as good as excellent LCD counterparts.

By the way Super AMOLED from Samsung is the closest we have currently to a full RGB panel and I do not doubt when they have solved the manufacturing issues they are having going full RGB sub pixel panel, we will first see them in Galaxy or Note devices.

But currently the picture is a messy one and one
with so many variables that to make definitive assertions or at least lazy assertions over tech here in the forum is misleading and false. I am talking about folks in general here not anyone in particular.

The panel on the Pixel is inferior to the 7 Plus LCD?

Yes in a number of ways. Outdoor visibility on the pixel is poor. Pixel has max Nit of 520 whereas the iPhone 7 plus goes up to 700 Nits. That's a massive difference.

Colour calibration is still better on the 7 Plus even with Apple's warm white calibration. When flipping the Pixel into SRGB mode the screen becomes noticeably warmer than the iPhone 7 Plus and there is no way to correct that on stock software.

Then there are reports of folks with burn in on their pixels where the always on capacitive buttons are. Erica Griffin has this issue herself I believe.

So yes, despite the pixel having a good AMOLED generally compared to some others, it's still not as good as the iPhone 7 Plus in a number of ways.

Agree 100 percent. Like everyone I just want a display with great blacks, good colour accuracy, low input lag, and good motion handling. Im a fan of any display that can provide me with those attributes. I also think MicroLED is the true future and I'm looking forward to that tech being available. I think my dislike of LCD in general stems from TV's, even the best LCD tv's have terrible uniformity in the blacks which really spoils the experience when watching a movie, in particular dark scenes.

Yeah I said that earlier too, just when we're at the point where we potentially could declare one better than the other, along will come another technology and muddy the waters or be the flat out better future tech. MicroLED could be the end to the argument entirely :) or the start of another

That's not the point whether a flagship "can beat" another flagship. The point is choice, I care about the specs as much as form and function. But it's pretty much gonna be the a11 is going to be awesome.

I am just saying in each and every spec the iPhone 8 will be better. That's all I want and need

The best phone is the phone I want to buy. LCD will be here on select Apple models as the coffin will take years to be buried.
Apple has no choice apart from Samsung for OLEDs according to reports and the LG OLED manufacturing is not going so well so they may exist as budget models.

Sure you have been saying this for at least four years and look what finally happened. Oled will be around for less time Than LCD as better tech takes its place.
Apple isn't even getting enough OLEDs to meet demand till 2019. You can forget about anything other than OLED till 2022 at the very least as no display maker has enough resources apart from Samsung to be Apple's supplier. Heck Samsung is supposedly bossing Apple around with the OLED displays and we don't even know if they are the best.

Your leaping to conclusions. My stance is you haven't read apples white paper on security so you can't comment. That's much different than claiming I said something I didn't.
I am saying its slower than TouchID and it will be fooled by a photo or some other technique a few days after release. I don't need to read the white paper to know this

Actually hardware wise Apple socs have been besting galaxy's for years; where it counts. And Tim gave android an heart attack in 2013 when 64 bit was introduced.

Okay and what about displays?

Well I am going back to iOS 10 and using my iPad for testing iOS 11 so if the sluggishness isn't fixed in GM, I will downgrade to iOS 10.3.3 permanently till I get my newer iPhone

All I'm saying is that apple offering choice is great for the consumer. I can stick with touchid (if they were even going to remove it in the first place) and lcd on the 7s+.

Seems apple has SOME choice and next year it will be an entirely different ballgame.

If samsung screws with apple they will drop them like a hot potato; guaranteed.

No, but you what you need is a reveal or a leak the day before the reveal to know exactly what apples plans are.

Okay and what about displays?
For me oled is the bottom reason I would ever upgrade my phone and whilst you place oled high on your list, I place the chipsets, which give the phone their character and function high on my list.

It looks like it'll be Samsung's OLED display tech all the way until 2019, basically until LG can get OLED production up and running to help Apple with supply. And the cost of Samsung being the sole supplier of top quality OLED panels? High prices that get passed onto the customer, not just for the higher-part costs, but to make sure Apple's profit margins are nicely padded.

From 9to5 Mac:

Report: Apple and LG aiming for 2019 to reach deal for iPhone OLED panels

So they expect greater yields in 2019. Until something better comes along, OLED is going to be around and in Apple flagship devices for years to come.

And from The Verge:

Apple in ‘urgent’ need of finding iPhone OLED supplier besides Samsung

Kuo estimates that Apple is paying between $120 and $130 per unit, which is a significant hike up from the approximate $45 to $55 cost of each 5.5-inch LCD for the iPhone 7 Plus. Apple is certainly going to be passing that cost on to consumers — and then some. The New York Times recently reported that the iPhone 8 is likely to start at a price of around $1,000. Fancier screens certainly play a part in that, as do the facial recognition capabilities rumored for the phone and Apple’s pursuit of high profit margins.

Kuo says Apple is “in urgent need of finding a second source of OLED,” which would take some of that bargaining power away from Samsung’s display unit (which is separate from Samsung Mobile). It would also help resolve supply constraints; it’s expected that the iPhone 8 will be hard to come by during its initial launch phase in the coming weeks.

LG is the obvious go-to, and the Korea Economic Daily reported in July that Apple is pumping over $2 billion into LG Display to secure OLED panels for future iPhones.

I continue to argue that Apple fell behind the game, and now the customers are the ones that will have to pay -- literally -- for it if they want Apple's new flagship.

I also worry about supply constraints and how that'll impact buyers. I think this has the potential to be the Pixel scenario x 1000 due to sheer demand.

OLED isn't the future, QLED is as soon as we can figure out how to mass produce.

7 Plus are reporting bugs to Apple in the feedback app

Doesn't really make a difference. I'm convinced only a fraction of the reports actually make it to them due to issues with Feedback Assistant. I between 10-15 feedback reports that update their 'sent date' every day, meaning they never actually got sent and are stuck in limbo somewhere. Others reporting the same issue. I've had Apple respond to individual feedback saying that it applies to a version that's several versions old, even though I sent it weeks ago. Clearly some sort of issue with the app meaning Feedback isn't actually being submitted.
