Do you plan to switch from iPhone to Android? (2016)

I think some are having a very difficult time acclimatizing to an age where the iPhone does not represent the best smartphone technologically, aesthetically or value per dollar.

The smart phone landscape has changed dramatically. If you geek out on tech, it’s a great time to be alive. If you subscribe to the idea of Apple being the best, you’re not getting through your day without a massive dosage of cognitive dissonance.

At best Apple will become more competitive with the iPhone X, but it will never be like it was in 2011.

Best. Interesting word. It's a great word that is the epitome of subjectiveness. Who defines best? What's best for me is not best for you.

You can be a "tech geek" and appreciate tech and still have a good idea of why you prefer certain tech over another and still discuss the tech for what it without trolling nor assigning labels to people who prefer one tech over another. MRU is a perfect example of someone who does that. He's a great example to follow. Others, sadly, not so much.

But back to what is probably now going to be called the iphone x as the iphone 8 seems to be relabeled from the 7S.

My biggest questions is how is apple going to make up for the loss of touch id?

Seems like "iPhone X" is going to be the name. I didn't think it'd be "8" anyway. It doesn't make sense to both release a 7S along with an "8" at the same time.

The 7S models will simply be called the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus...

Yep, as they come from the firmware, those are the names they're about to go with. Unless, of course, they knew that X won't be available straight away and they're going to release an update before it actually ships, they could have had a placeholder name for it in the firmware just in case the firmware leaked (like it did) and spared the actual surprise to the event. That would be a nice surprise, but I'm definitely not holding my breath for it. I'd run out of oxygen way too fast

Yes its stock Android and it gets updates direct from Google just like Nexus series. They arent mid range devices though. Low end is more like it.

we have an apple apologist that trolls the alternative section. Talks in circles...contradicts himself constantly. The problem is some just can't help but take the bait and engages the apologist. That leads to endless banter back and forth.
Everyone here should just not reply to or engage the apologist not matter what he says. That would end all this endless dribble.

There’s one at iMore who posts the same garbage repeatedly about how she got an iPhone, iPad, and an Apple Watch. It’s the same post repeatedly and there’s so many grammatical errors. Someone will post with a problem and she posts about how she doesn’t have a problem and talk about all of her apple devices. It’s just annoying when you’re trying to get help with something. There’s other trolls at iMore, but that’s the most common one.

I can't believe they are actually going ahead with not blacking out the status bar to match the cutout. It looks so weird to have those "ears". I'm a big fan of what they did with the cutout and status bar functionally, but aesthetically they seem to have dropped the ball by calling attention to it.

My heart goes out to the folks who will be throwing their computers against the wall on pre-order night trying to grab one. If you thought it's bad during "normal" iPhone launches, wait until a new form factor that's limited is introduced into the mix.

Funny, I was just talking about that with a co-worker. Honestly, would that be the worst idea on the planet? If the X is as constrained as they're stating it will be, I would bet if you get in on the first wave of phones shipped, you could flip it on eBay for potentially 1K. I do believe there are folks out there who would break the sound barrier paying 2K for an unopened iPhone X out of the gate.

I'm not sweating it either way. Each iPhone launch when I order, I make a deal with myself: I'll give it approximately 5 minutes or so of trying to place the order. If I'm successful, great. If not, I'll get it eventually.

No shame in that. I plan on getting 2 of them on my account, but my guess is I will only be fast enough to get one before they get sold out. I'll sell one to subsidize the one I will keep. I have a feeling there is going to be a HUGE markup on iPhone 8's 2nd hand for a few months after release.

The Apple brand operates like no other brand/OEM. If they're first, they're an innovator (and everyone after is copying). If they're not first, they're perfecting existing technology for the mainstream (but not copying, mind you). They can't lose. That's why despite my criticisms of them at the level of the technology, as a company, they are virtually untouchable.

They'll also popularize wireless charging. And glass-back smartphones are going to be cool again.
