And yet that’s what users want. And what apple keeps adding. Mouse. Kb. iPadOS will never deliver without a major rewrite which they also wouldn’t do. May as well bring macOS to iPad Pro.
Hm, I think nobody is “against” it. It’s just that the current difference in manoeuvring the interface makes it a not really pleasant experience. I suggest you remote connect to a desktop and use some program... Blender, AutoCAD, heck, a shell. If you seriously want to use them, you need additional hardware.
It’s a nobrainer for apple.
It is indeed. They got you covered… already… with the Mac.

The only people against having options are the cheerleader trolls.

But you have options. Apparently you are simply not aware of them, but they are there. I guess the only people against recognising them are the ignoramus trolls. ?

-increase the RAM roof for an app
They already did increase the max RAM per app. 5GB is new for the M1. They don’t need iPad OS 15 to do this. 8GB or 16GB options allow more apps to stay open without being punted by the OS.

The M1 isn’t the complete game changer for the iPad as Apple’s marketing would like you to believe. What other chip could they have used in this update? Hint: there wasn’t any because the M1 is the A14X. They didn’t just decide to bring a “Mac” chip to the iPad. This was the plan all along. The A12X was Apple’s test for a chip design for the Mac.

Apple has been pretty clear on this:

I’m on a 2020 12.9” - wanted to upgrade but don’t see a reason to.

Being able to dual-boot between iPadOS and macOS would be an instant upgrade decision for me.

if they announce the iPadOS and macOS app stores are merging - I’ll probably sit out until the next iPad release and give that feature time first.

Does anyone really care outside of YouTubers and Podcasters if FCP and Logic comes to iPad. Does it make the iPad anymore "Pro"? There are already excellent alternatives available in the App Store. "Professionals" just don't want to learn a new interface.

If all WWDC brings is a couple of apps it changes nothing.

Why have a roof at all? It was also my point that this is an "easy" fix.

M1/A14X is a game changer in terms of peoples view on the iPad (Pro). A Mac chip and 16 Gb RAM is not really a toy anymore however people argue. The interesting question is why make a 16 Gb version at all? They could easily have make a 1 and 2 Tb model with 8 Gb so why put the extra 8 Gb in? I believe there are some heavy apps arriving at WWDC.

I reckon that at least Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X will be announced at the WWDC and heavily promoted for the M1 IPP models.

Don’t let marketing cloud your judgement. The A12X was already a Mac chip in 2018. 16GB allows for better multitasking workflows as iPad OS will drop apps from memory when it needs to without involving the user. There is no task manager in iPad OS and no way to verify if an app is actually running or not through the app switcher, and no elegant way to “quit” apps (yes you can swipe up in the switcher but Apple doesn’t want you to have to manage apps that way) . Allowing uncapped memory usage without these things features would cause slowdowns or apps to unexpectedly crash in the background. iPad OS is a completely different paradigm than macOS.

Why didn’t Apple announce all these apparently exclusive M1 iPad features and Pro apps when the new iPads were announced and say they will be coming later this year? Apple hasn’t been shy about doing that in the past. Or just wait to announce the iPads at WWDC if iOS 15 changes the landscape of the iPad as much as some people here like to believe? If pro apps are coming they will not be exclusive to M1.

It seems it is always the next release of iPad OS that is going to be the ”big one”. Multi-user support is a good example of something people have been saying is coming soon to the iPad for something like 6 years now…

Let the iPad be the iPad and the Mac be the Mac and not some bizarre hybrid.

I'm just wishing some love for us programmers. We have nothing. Video, Photo and Music creators at least already have SOMETHING on iPadOS already, albeit perhaps not as pro of apps as they would want. But for programmers, there's literally nothing. Bring XCode to iPad and some way of interacting with the file system in an "iPadOS way" so that we can actually compile code and work on it.

FCP and LP etc pro apps for M1 IPP would be great but how many people, who use iPads, will this truly impact? Outside of this forum and Youtubers I really don't see there being excitement.

Anecdotally, everyone I know uses their iPads for media consumption (films, web browsing, email, looking at photos that they took with their phone, gaming). Myself, who uses their IPP for work a LOT, is hoping for improvements in iPadOS 15 that are not dependent M1 chip (not because I don't have one!!) like a desktop class browser, anywhere tiles, better file system app, stop apps asking every single time if I want to install the app, extended screen support as opposed to mirrored, spatial audio in all apps - and the front camera in landscape (ok - they might struggle on this one)

Apple marketing does not affect me much . I did not say the putative pro apps would be M1 specific, did I. 2020 iPP with 6 Gb RAM will run these apps nicely. I agree that reloading of large apps will be less frequent of the 16 Gb model. Important enough, I believe.

A week left and then we listen to the anguished screams from the MR members :).

That might be true, but any Pro iPad will be able to run them and they absolutely won't be exclusive to the M1 iPads.

I'm not really understanding why people think the M1 iPad is somehow different than any other upgrade Apple offers each year. Its literally an update to the 12x and 12z chips they've been using. Just because they slapped the M1 name on it doesn't make it some unicorn iPad that is going to be able to run apps that other iPads can't run. They all can and will continue to be able to run the same things. The big allure to the iPads this year isn't the chip, its the screen. I see a little difference between this years iPad and my older 2018 model, but there is literally barely any difference between this years model and the 2020 model that my wife has.

I have an M1 MacBook Pro and it doesn't do anything my old intel MacBook Pro can't do. Are their supposed to be some Pro Apps that make my M1 laptop special? If so, what are they? Apple really did some marketing magic this year with their new iPads to make people think this.

I can absolutely see why people think the M1, and especially the RAM, in the iPad Pro indicates big changes to iPadOS are incoming (and I hope they are), but wouldnt we normally have seen something leaked by now if that were the case?

Some pro Apple apps like XCode coming to iPad seems more likely, but even then lack of recent leaks is surprising if it does happen.

Not everything always gets leaked, all will be revealed at WWDC ?

WWDC this year is very surprising in terms of the leaks, there haven't been that many at all. Software leaks are difficult anyway, usually there are a couple of surprises even with some software leaks in previous years.

Personally I think we could see Pro level Apps like Final Cut Pro, if that is indeed the case I personally would buy Final Cut Pro for the 2021 iPad Pro I currently have on order from Apple.

There is going to be a lot of people eating humble pie after WWDC either way. ?

I’m sticking with pro apps are definitely coming at WWDC ?

That 8gb and 16gb ram isn’t there for show ?

Good god. If we really do get xCode I’m going to lose my mind. That and the file system change would pretty much do it for me.

Ok, so I got it. M1 on iPad pros are only to tell, that the performance is the same as with M1 Macs. It's not telling that we are going to get MacOS apps on iPad pro, or something similar.. only apps that can benefit more RAM. I got a bit mislead by Apple marketing. They should have A14X with different RAM configuration on iPad pros instead, so Apple could had save us from false hope and this useless speculation. So I rather just buy M1 air.

Yes that is true, it i just a faster iPad. We are allowed to dream and speculate here as well:

I would like to have a dual boot iPad so when docked to Magic keyboard it can optionally boot MacOS. Alternatively, to be able to run some MacOS apps in shell. I still want to have the iPadOS/iPad experience most of the times but for some software this would be good to do. Dual boot or a shell will mean that the MacOS and iPadOS will not fuse which which is consistent with what Apple says. Taking into account that a fully loaded IiPad Pro with pencil and keyboard is more expensive that a MacBook air, it is not too much to ask for a dual boot/shell option, is it?

Probably none of this will happen as Apple wants me to buy a Mac and an iPad but two M1 devices feels odd...

The whole notion of something great happening because of the extra RAM is all wishful thinking based on the notion that iPads Pro are somehow closer to being Macs than ever before because they now run on processors that Apple also put in some of its desktop machines.
You forget that they’ve already done things that suggest it, like making iPad apps run natively on Macs.

Why let the iPad do everything when Apple can make us buy both an iPad and a Mac?

Because that’s dumb, greedy and unsustainable.

I think Apple has done something very deliberate here and I can think no other reason for them to have brought in the M1 and these different RAM configurations if they weren't about to allow the iPad Pro to do more. I do think Pro apps are coming. They won't give it full Mac OS, but they will give it enough to really make it an in-between device.

They certainly must have realized the strong implication coming from making the Mac and iPad run the same CPU. It can’t just be about cost savings for them, with zero benefits for users, or they risk ticking a lot of their customers off.
