I think the more important question is how do those who are most confident of huge changes coming react if there really aren't any? Mass returns? Hiatus from Apple products? ...or just move and keep buying all the cool stuff Apple makes? ;)

Those that are waiting on specific M1 iPP features for iPadOS… will certainly return it if those features aren’t huge. I‘ve been consistent with saying as much, I won’t be abandoning Apple nor the iPP. But I just won’t see the benefit in having the latest and greatest iPP, when Apple hasn’t provided any reason to do so.

If people do mass returns its really on them and not Apple. Apple upgraded their iPad line like they do every year and never made any indications that iPadOS was going to go through some redical change or that there would be additional software or features for iPad Pro users.

In reality they put in an M1 chip in it, which is marginally better than the 12x chip, and people just assumed that some type of big reveal was coming. It most likely isn’t.

The problem with your statement is that the M1 iPad Pro can’t really do anything that a 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro can do. Do you see Apple Apple offering different software features to the M1 MacBook Pro or even the iPhone Pro? The latest and greatest is almost always just slightly better than the previous year, this year being even more true than in the past.

The M1 isn't going to stand out except that it might run an app faster than another iPad. Apple is absolutely not going to do anything special for the iPad Pro, because they can't. Why people think this is baffling. iPad OS is iPad OS, and that's all there is to it. I know this because I can look at every other single Pro and non Pro device that Apple offers. They all do the same thing outside of some hardware differences. There is no difference in the OS for each model and that is never going to change.

Really? There are already games that require specific models.

I’m curious. What iPP do you have?

And yes, as of now.. there’s really nothing software related to differentiate 2021 iPP to 2018/2020. And that’s what I’m hoping Apple will address at WWDC. And I wouldn’t be putting myself in this situation if I don’t believe Apple will provide any huge benefits to M1 IPP. I could have just kept my 2018 iPP and carried on.

I’m not sure what you mean by different software features to the M1 MBP and iPhone Pro.

Well the A9X can do the same thing as the M1 (except some games), just slower. At some point software get so slow so it is useless and then it is time to buy something new. IpadOS15 will be the same for all iPads but some apps will run faster on M1 than on A9X.

I take photographs which right of the camera you won’t be able to even view on a A9x device. Not slower. You just can’t. Editing apps will tell you that the picture can’t be loaded.

They will tell you that even on a A12Z.

And there are other areas where the M1 just does things while the A9x stands in bewildered awe ?

There’s nothing official there though. They are simply stating it won’t work on a model not listed, some user could still install it.

Given all the Apple review stuff that has come out lately (epic trial) I wouldn’t be surprised if this one just slipped by (or special treatment by Apple, I’m out of gaming loop, maybe it’s a ‘big dev’). I imagine if enough people purchased it and asked for refunds the app would get taken down.

That’s completely different. Yeah there are tons of apps that won’t work on older hardware. Im not sure what that has to do with anything.

I have the M1 iPad Pro 12.9. And watch, there will be no major benefit to owning an M1. Do you think there is something that an M1 can run that the 12x or 12z can’t? Its not that big of a jump in chip performance. Its honestly not even noticeable from the 12z.

Apple should have saved themselves some headaches here and just named this chip the A14. None of this conversation would even be happening if they’d had done that.

Apple is really hyping up WWDC, going off their press images, everyone in the pictures looks amazed and wowed by the new software coming to all the platforms, WWDC is going to be huge. ???

May I ask why you’re being so negative? especially when we haven’t even seen what’s arriving at WWDC

Plenty of people have noticed a difference, I’ve noticed a massive difference coming from a 3rd gen pro.

Vocal minority.

Meanwhile, even normies like my aunt have heard about the new iPad Pro with the better display and Mac CPU (never mind that the CPU tech originated from iPads and it's overkill for social media and streaming).

If she hadn't broken her 2017 Pro 12.9 two months earlier and bought a replacement 2020 ASAP, she probably would've gotten the 2021 Pro. The $100 price increase is pretty negligible.

Obviously, no one knows what Apple has in mind until WWDC happens. Not you. Not I. Not anyone on this forum unless Tim Apple lurks in the shadows…

People are grumbling about something big because Apple has done more than just naming the chip M1 here. They increased RAM by up to 266% over the 2020 version. They also started listing RAM for an ”i” device for the first time in the history of that line. iPadOS still has no way of monitoring RAM nor does it even list RAM in “Settings -> General -> About”. Since all of this is missing in iPadOS 14.6 it strongly suggests that iPadOS 15 is where these hardware improvements will be utilized.

If it were a chip naming change alone I’d be less excited, but the trifecta that they added (chip naming, Thunderbolt 3, and RAM) has me very much on the side of something massive coming along here. I’m convinced they delivered the iPads ahead of WWDC to ensure developers have stock to start taking advantage of what they add.

I think a lot of people will be clamoring for 2021 iPads in a short while and those who opted for 2020 or older models since it was “underwhelming“ will be a bit less happy depending on their workflows and needs.

No they can't even install it. The purchase button is grayed out unless you're on a compatible device. First time I visited the app in the App Store I was on m,y 10.5 iPad Pro and it was grayed out and told me I wasn't on a device capable of running it. Next time was on my M1 12.9 and I bought it.

Uh, it directly contradicts the contention that there's nothing you can do on an M1 iPad Pro that you can't do on any other iPad. You literally can't buy the game unless you're on one of those models shown - they're not just suggestions.

I think iPad OS is fundamentally gonna stay the same with some measly stuff like widgets wherever you want them. I don't even think they're gonna open up the extra ram on the 16gig model to devs.

We also might get an announcement about some mix of logic/final/xcode.
