So I came across an iPad and installed iOS 18. The photos app is awful. I don’t want to see my pics in a grid ever. I just want a camera roll for pics I’ve taken on my device and keep things in my photo albums organized on my Mac and synced. That’s all I want to see. What a joke.

Like seriously, I just want the photo library to be 100% not visible and keep my recent pictures I took separate. iOS 17 was perfectly fine.

If you pinch and zoom in on the photo grid, it turns into a camera roll view.
Is this the kind of view you referred to?

No, I don’t want to see the grid ever. It was fine in 17 where it was its own separate section called library. I never once went in there. I just work in the albums section. Like right now I see just three pics in my camera roll. I don’t want to see the rest of the pics.

For me it is the opposite. I’m always in the library and rarely in the album section. The album section I only use occasionally to get a location overview and find som recipes. 😊

Gave it a few days and I just don’t like it, I ended up going back to iOS 17 from the beta which I’ve never done in past years. There’s too much extra swiping and unnecessary fluff when you open it. I’m hoping they make some more adjustments before the final release, especially with the layout when opening it.

Unfortunately it seems as though people actually like this mess. Submit feedback! It’s probably too late for that, though. When the masses get this update in the Fall, there’s going to be a LOT of upset people.

Even dignifying this miniscule sample with a rational thought - it's 12 people who think it's okay or better, compared to 8 who hate it.
Unless I suck at maths, that's the majority of people in this thread not hating it...
Seems like 25% that “Like it” isn’t a good look.

Oh, do take care not to fall off that high horse and hurt yourself :)

I've seen that "littany" of "issues" and those were subjective views of the person who wrote the article.
Those views don't represent the majority of people, and neither does my own view - by which the new design is pretty good and doesn't bother me.

Perhaps you don't have the capacity to understand that I don't have to accept your opinion, or anyone else's for a fact.

I'm sure Apple will be collecting feedback at scale and basing their design decisions off of that.
Who asked you to accept anything?
If you don’t agree, fine. But make a counter argument.
“Because resenting change”, literally not an argument.
The reply to your post had nothing to do with your take on the photo apps feature. It’s for just sh*tting on people with whom you disagree, for reasons only you would know, if you even have any.

59 votes is a small sample size, granted. But your figures don’t accurately represent the accounting of this particular subset of users; small though it may be.

Really?! You can't scrub videos full screen anymore!?
Please, someone tell me I'm doing something wrong. How can Apple do this? There is a big ugly black border of real estate now, whilst your video is smaller, and more difficult to see what's going on.

Has anyone submitted feedback for this?
As far as I can tell you can’t and I hate it more than I should. Do Apple engineers not use their phones like normal people?

Ah yes, nitpicking small numbers again. So let's have an update on this.

At the time of writing this comment - 64 votes. 32 people hate it, 32 people think it's okay or better.
We have learned that a) this is an insignificant sample size and b) there's no conclusion to be drawn here.

And something being different is very much a reason alone for people to dislike it, I'm surprised I even need to explain that.

New Apple design hates tabs and loves an endless scroll with gradient blurs top and bottom, which I agree looks really good visually, but in this case the UX is just not as good - although in theory it should be. This redesign really wants you to sit down and personalize it (without really inviting you to do so in a very obvious way), and only makes sense if you take your time to do that. It puts the memories and collections front and center, albums which were the main way to organize are now lower priority and found when you scroll down towards the bottom. And you'll forget where to find these since it's harder to form some sort of location permanence for things we scroll down towards. I don't spend time creating memory movies or organizing my library beyond deleting photos I don't want to keep, so it just results in visual noise and there's a higher cognitive load associated with using the app. It feels designed under a false assumption that people use the memories functionality a lot. So yes it's theoretically simpler but you'll see a lot of people saying it's a whole lot more overwhelming.

... I have only the one tile/tab/whatever thing at the top, so sliding either way just gives a "Customise" screen. It'd be nice if that could be disabled but I've not swiped accidentally at all, so it's fine.

Latest beta does away with the options at the top. It shows photos only - no possibility to customise / swipe left or right. Perfect.

Yeah! I was not a fan o that carousel at the top.. Being able t just show the same items as what's listed in Pre-iOS 18 is great (Albums, Utilities, & Media Types) with the random other things scatter from before below that works for me.

The carousel didn’t even work, because even to this day as of beta 4, swiping right on it would more often than not actually swipe left. Only sometimes would it swipe right as intended. Completely broken. I guess getting rid of it entirely was one way to solve that problem.

It’s an improvement and I’m glad they’re listening to feedback but this does not change how unusable it is for simple tasks like, say, scrubbing through a video. Or seeing your elapsed time. Things that were not even slightly problematic before iOS 18.

The best part is I just tried it again to confirm that it occasionally swipes in the opposite direction, and not only did it do it again but today it decided to swipe to a card on the carousel displaying an extremely explicit pornographic image from my library. Front and center, taking up a very large percentage of the screen.
Imagine if I was in public or trying to show something to somebody else from my Photos app?

The other day it was Bill Nye the Science Guy. You don’t even have any idea what you’ll see when you touch something, or how it will even behave. And keep in mind, this is not a section I deliberately swiped to - very much the opposite. Everything in iOS 18 Photos is by surprise and subversion. You have no control over this app.

Have you tried Beta 5? No carousel crap.

Right, which is why I applauded them getting rid of it. I have not installed b5 yet. Just pointing out that the carousel itself was still broken as of the most recent version that still had it, and highly problematic in ways that go beyond mere user interface glitches.

I like the carousel thing, seems like whenever Apple has a good idea lately they cave in to tech blog complaints. Should be something we can optionally turn on and off.
