The X is such a letdown. That notch is ugly and pointless. Fire the design genius who thought it made sense. Also, it should be 256 or 512GB only. Cheap Apple is just trying to rip you off.

The lineup photo made me realize how much I like the bezels framing the content. I'm going to miss them when Apple goes to all edge to edge phones. Glad I'm getting an 8 Plus.
I don't think the notch is going anywhere until Apple can figure out how to put all the sensors under the display. Apple wants a complete bezel free experience and wrapping the display around the top corners despite the notch is as close as they can come to achieving this..for now.
I don't think Apple will allow for a full top bezel on their phone before they figure out how to put the sensors under the display. Having said that, the notch doesn't bother me. I feel like those criticizing it as hard as they are now will change their tunes when they actually hold it and play around with it. That big Oled screen is going to be beautiful. I can't wait for it. Coming from the 7.
As long as there's no way to put a completely borderless display on the front (which no company thus far has achieved), the notch is just a detail of the software implementation which Apple is free to adapt at any point without having to release new hardware. A black bar instead of the notch is just a software update away (although I wouldn't count on it).
That's using the X's new portrait lighting. This is the unfiltered non studio light. The difference is remarkable, that is Apple Magic....

The only minds that will be changed are those who think they'll be fine with the notch. Just wait until you're in the pitch dark and only see that hideous display with its non-uniformity drawing your eyes directly to the top, taking your brain activity quite literally away from the content.
Notch will be removed next year and Apple will integrate TouchID into the screen. Next iPhone X will have a uniform screen. This is the easiest way for Apple to make bank next year. Introduce something that people hate but yearn because they have been stagnating their design the last 4 years and then "perfect" the new design next year so people buy it all over again.

OMG. This is getting crazy. Every time I see a hands-on video the least I notice it's the "hideous non-uniform" display. I'm just glad I don't suffer from this "notch syndrome " people seem to have. Jeez
It looks ugly but I'm sure you'd just get used to it over time. It's shame because without if the iPhone X's design would be absolutely flawless. I do like everything in those pictures of the uI of the iPhone X until you get to the top and you see the notch. However like I've said you'd probably get used to it quite quickly too.
I'd bet my last dollar there'd be lots of people saying it looks featureless, generic and bland. The reality is, especially on forums like this, people are going to moan. It's just the nature of things. It doesn't reflect anything about the phone, only those people, but it'll happen nonetheless.
Most videos/pics have been showing it on the left. I think if you make it go on the right side, it'll feel better as we're used to scroll bars being on the right. We're used to ignoring that, perhaps it'll help the notch disappear in our minds easier.
My opinion has always been that it is an objectively horrible design. It's not bad in portrait in some things like lock screen/ home screen. And not horrible in apps like calendar.
But god, when there is content like videos or pics...this thread just reinforces how stupid a design it was.

And we clearly see how the "5.8" display does really display more meaningful content. It's all filled up with white space for "safe areas" and is narrower than the 5.5 incher on the 8 plus.

What's waiting until next you're going to do? You will have the option of purchasing the older iPhone X at a discounted price next year, but the newest iPhone will cost just as much, perhaps even more. The Price of the iPhone X is not for everybody and Apple didn't intend it to be for everybody either. That's why they have an expansive iPhone lineup.
Only because so many people here have no idea what they're talking about. The only way the notch gets in the way of videos is when you're already cropping out loads of the video anyway. The notch has nothing to do with it. The issue of the video not reaching full screen status is to do with aspect ratio. The bars that landscape video create are much thinner than the bezel on the 8/8+, and the visible screen is still larger than the 8. It's less than the plus, sure, but then the screen is superior, so that's the trade off.
This relates to surfing the net in landscape mode, something most people never do anyway, and yes you're right. The white bars are hideous and there's no getting around it. I think that's also an aspect ratio issue, although I'm not 100% on that. It's very ugly indeed but would happen so rarely it's not enough to put me off buying.
Lol. Yeah, we have no idea that a chunk of our content is cut out if we use full screen mode.
If you're watching video in proper aspect ratio, then no. It's not.
