I have your exact setup, but haven't gotten your stroke of luck yet lmao

Bought the Moshou 1.5M USB-C to HDMI (same that has been linked on this thread from Aliexpress), flashed with no issues through my Lenovo Yoga's Thunderbolt port, but can't get 4k 120Hz to work for the life of me (don't really care about 8 bit vs 10 bit).

TV is a LG C2 42", laptop is the base M1 Pro Macbook Pro 14.

I reinstalled BetterDisplay, used the EDID file from the original post, and 4k 120Hz does show up as an option in the BetterDisplay menu, but whenever I select it, the signal to the TV just dies (as if I unplugged the cable).

Tried unplugging and replugging a few times with no luck -- if you can think of anything else that you tried doing so I can try to replicate, please let me know!

Thanks
Apologies for the late reply. Seems like you did everything right.

I found keeping the laptop lid OPEN gave me a working signal. I don't know why but that was my experience. However echoing the reports on this forum, my connection stability with the Moshou cable is far from good (frequent blackouts and screen flashing).

Similar to other users in this thread, I got myself a Cable-matters adapter with VMM6100 chipset and used a ugreen HDMI 2.1 cable. I still need to keep the laptop lid open for 120Hz but the connection appears far more stable.

Personal update: Still no 120Hz + HDR for me (but that's OK). Majority of the time I revert back to 60Hz for better stability with plugging in/out.

Hope this helps.

Yes I have exactly setup with you now, and I also encountered such issue. The best way to mitigate this is to turn on the option "Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off". It is within a pop-up window after clicking on the "Advanced..." button in Display setting page.

Since the power consumption of M1 chip could be ignored when idle, and the battery will not be used while power adapter connected so minor impact on battery healthiness, I think it is a acceptable tradeoff to not sleep the machine
This did not help for me unfortunately, still had to replug the adapter.

Hi all,

This all looks so exciting and actually a bit frustrating at the same time as well.

I learned about this topic after purchasing LG C2 42" as a monitor for my MacBook Pro m1 max 16"(the main reason is the Xbox Series X and multimedia consumption of course). After following the guide on the first page, I ended up having results for 4k 120hz but not stable and 8-bit. During those tests, I didn't have any Windows computer to flush the cable matters "201388-gry" adapter. I have no idea if the chipset is VMM6100 or VMM7100. Attaching an SS I grabbed from someone else's post because also this is what I see about my adapter. Is this chip a third variant besides the two? Or maybe I couldn't see the details because of Mac OS?

Today, I will be able to run other tests with the "201388-gry" and also "201398" (bought it for just testing, let me know if anyone else tried this one). Luckily, this time I have a PC to update the firmware in the adapters.

Link for the 201398 I purchased;

Although I'm also excited about getting 4k 120hz from M1 Max, my priority would be getting the best color option possible rather than the refresh rate. LG C2 and BetterDisplay show that I'm on 8bit. Any idea how to get 4k 60hz 4:4:4 10 bit from this M1 Max? (My input is already set to PC and the 4K color setting is turned on in the TV.)

Not even getting 10 bit from the M1 Max is very annoying. I have already started searching the market for buying a PC and selling the Macbook. We should be able to get the best color at least...

Man dats sum good ass ****! Registered to post this, been following these threads for a while.

Got 3840x2160@120 RGB 10b 4L10 working with M1 pro & LG Posé 48" tv with:
  • 2m MOSHOU USB C to HDMI 8K 60Hz 4K 120Hz Cable
  • VMM61004k120hzRGB-Fullrom.zip
  • Custom EDID with DisplayPort 1.4 Interface using AW EDID Editor & BetterDisplay
No signal issues yet, but sometimes the cable needs to be reconnected a couple times to get any picture out of it.
Managed to brick one Cable Matters adapter in the process (VMM7100 one with usb-c power delivery).

Massive thanks for the research!

Hey, I'm in the same boat, and have also been following these threads for a bit.

I got my 1.5m Moshu with VM6100 about a week ago, after following each step carefully I got it working on the first try. It's been working ever since.

I'm using a 16" MacBook Pro with m1 pro and the LG C2 42". I get 4k 120hz RGB 10b when checking the TV and 8b from BetterDisplay.

The only issue I have is the same as a lot of other people, when my MacBook goes to sleep it sometimes loses signal. Restarting BetterDisplay seems to fix it most of the times.

I want to thank everyone who made this possible!

I thought perhaps this might help my issue too, but unfortunately it doesn't.

Everytime I disconnect from the USB-C adapter (physically) and then reconnect, the displays reset to mirrored mode with the internal screen acting as the mirror for the Main LG screen.

Then I Stop Mirroring, make the internal screen the Main, and the LG the extended. But it switches back around every time. I've tried stopping the mirror from BetterDisplay and using "preserve settings" in BD also, but it doesn't help.

4K@60 HDR should work out of the box. If it doesn't flash the adapter with the "for Mac" firmware linked. It shouldn't need any EDID hacks for 60Hz.
If you want good colors and no issues with adapters the only way as of now is a screen with native DP.

Make sure using tests that you're ACTUALLY running 10 bit. HDMI side color mode is partially decoupled from the input color mode.

Soo, CableMatters just sent me this new (VMM7100) firmware...I updated it via Parallels...and it works! Still no VRR support but that's good enough for me.

Awesome, this is working here as well. Flashed update and no other settings required! I got the VMM7100 delivered yesterday (was hoping for the GRY version, but got A). Decided I was happy to stick with the 8bit and wait until 10bit was hopefully unlocked but wasn't expecting it so soon!

Thanks a lot!

Sorry, I didn't understand the "for Mac" firmware part. Where can I find it? Should I flash it the same way I did for updating the adapter?

I checked the versions of my adapters and the 201388-gry turned out VMM6100 and the 201398 is VMM7100.

At one stage I managed to get 4k 120hz RGB 10b(with 201388-gry, VMM6100) according to the TV's info box but the sharpness and the color didn't look good as 60hz to me. After playing with it a little bit more I couldn't get 10b again and gave up until tomorrow. How is the picture quality looking for the ones lucky enough to have VMM6011? I found the application icons on the doc textured a bit poorly for example.

I got another issue now and I will upload a picture here tonight. Basically, If I have a grey background, windows with bright scroll bars, or some posts with whitish photos like Twitter in dark mode create vertical fainted lines starting from the window through the top of the screen. It's easy to see with a grey background but if you look close enough you can also spot it with other colors but black. Black seems fine. Also if you try to move the window, lines are following so it's not creating something static. Looks like faintly reflected vertical bars through the top. I'm not blaming MacBook or the adapter here because it was appearing with other inputs too.

I tried pixel clearing in the TV's Oled care settings and stopped checking things as it was the middle of the night. Will see it today...
Did anyone notice something similar to this before? Or could you try it, if you have a similar thing?

Oh, thanks I didn't know. Did a test and it seems to display correctly. :D

Hey all,

I've got a 201388-gry with VMM7100 from amazon UK, updated it with the previous 7100 fw through parallels that was shared a few pages back and got 120hz 4:2:2 8b working with constant black screen and not waking from sleep issues with a 1m certified HDMI.

I was having troubles getting the adapter recognised by parallels/windows as the cable matters tutorial is saying to update it with a display attached to the adapter. The only way it was working is without a display and that's how I managed get it connected to update the FW with VmmHIDTool.
Since the update no matter what I do I can't see the adpater as a connected USB device to update it, even if I check it through system info, it's like nothing is connected (the blue led is on). The adapter still works though, I get picture through it.

I've tried it on another M1 and it's the same. I have no windows PC, would it be possible that I can still update it through a PC or should I just grab another adapter? Any other ideas what it could be?

After purchasing a handful of adapters, I was finally able to get some that had the 6100 chip. I finally have 4k 120hz HDR on my tv. Thank you so much. However, I can't seem to get 10bit working. I don' know if I missed something, or if my TV just doesn't support 10bit with HDR and 120hz enabled. Any suggestions? I have a Samsung q90T

Ok there are some bad and good news. The new custom Firmware delivered from CM does not work correctly(only 30hz4k) on the Model: 201362 VMM7100 with cable:

But there is some hope that the Model: 201388 with VMM7100:

can now also been upgraded for 4k@120hzRGB10b. @MM991 does confirm that here: LINK

So we need some another for testing. If this can be confirmed from another guys too, i will update the OP with this informations!

All what u need for update are attached:

of course the day i get my 6100, this gets fixed for 7100. i will test it out since i have both. Does this make the 7100 better than 6100 in any way, or are they just exactly the same now?

If the custom VMM7100 Firmware from CM works, the benefit is that u dont need an EDID override anymore.

Thanks a million, guys! After another try, I finally got RGB 10b 4L10 4k 120hz result from VRR info on TV.

Is this the best we can get for now? The adapter is 201388-gry with VMM6100 and the FW is the one shared in the first post of this thread.

IMG_0711.jpeg

And this is the issue on grey backgrounds with the LG C2 42" I mentioned previously in my post;

IMG_0712 2.jpeg

Has anyone else seen similar issues? I believe this is the popular vertical banding issue. Unfortunately, pixel cleaning didn't help at all. Some people say it will disappear after 100 hours of use. I will definitely try my chance at LG C2 threads but just wanted to mention it anyways.
