Embarrassing question - this will work fine through a dock once flashed and with the appropriate cable, right? I want to use a thunderbolt dock with power so I only need to worry about one cable to my MBP. And from the dock I want the 2.1 HDMI cable left in place.

Also, anyone have a recommended dock for this setup? :)
Depends on the dock. A USB-C dock will probably only have 2 lanes of HBR3.
You need a Thunderbolt 3 dock with Titan Ridge (supports DisplayPort 1.4 - 4 lanes of HBR3) or a Thunderbolt 4 dock.
Older Thunderbolt 3 docks with Alpine Ridge only support DisplayPort 1.2.

This is exactly what i want to do as well! Was hoping that a good hdmi2.1 capable dock would work but that doesn't seem to be the case! Let me know if you find a solution!

Iam using a TB4 Dock and the CM Adapter is connected to it. This works fine.

I got the Moshou C-006 (cable, not the adapter) from Aliexpress. It came with the synaptics vmm6100 and I was able to change the firmware.
But, on a Intel MBP 2019, I could'n get 4k@120hz with RGB (only 4:2:0) on a LG C2.
Does anyone know if 4k@120hz rgb 4:4:4 10b on a Intel MBP is even possible ?
(Sorry for asking Intel related question on this thread).

Plz read the OP!
I have, but I still don't have a clear idea if its better a 6100 or 7100. As per my understanding reading the OP:

6100, full 4k120hz RGB 10bit. But need external program to make it work
7100, full 4k120hz RGB but 8bit. Doesn't need a external program to work.

Is that right?

Only the Anker with vmm7100 works but not 100% correctly, only 8b and non HDR. So u will be better with an vmm6100 till now.

Thanks! I have found links for mainly US stores. Any one from aliexpress confirmed working or to buy in the EU/Spain?

Looks like it not available in EU anymore. U have to search by ure self where to get one. Check the OP there are some other Brand Adapters too.

It is available in the UK store, even with the import fees from the UK to the EU it's a reasonable price:

I'll report as soon as a I get it if it works with the OP's method.

I noticed that the only setting neither BetterDisplay NOR macOS ever seem to remember is HDR on; I always have to flip it on manually, Config Protection doesn't do anything for this setting it seems. Anyone else?

I feel like there is something off here. Somehow when I am in 4k 120hz mode it feels really laggy when dragging windows and in some animations. I do not have that when in 4k 60hz it rather feels smoother too. Anyone else having this experience.

The mouse and everything feels smooth but its just some animations like dragging a window really fast it seems like it skips some frames. My guess is that somehow this setup can not deliver the whole bandwidth all the time.

Anyone else having this experience?

Use something other than a bluetooth accessory. Using a mouse with a 2.4G dongle or Magic Trackpad (which uses some ‘magic’ interpolation or something) will give you smooth animations. Had the same and definitely not a bandwidth issue

Best is to contact BetterDisplay @stevemr123 for support in this

Cable Matters support first had me order a used version of 201388-GRY from Amazon.com. It should arrive this week. They say it should contain the VMM6100. We'll see about that.
Thanks again for the tip! I ordered a used one from their amazon listing which was delivered today, and sure enough it was the older 201388-GRY model I was hoping for. Works great!

Is the HDMI input set to "PC" mode (PC icon in the input settings) when in 120Hz still? Sometimes it switches back to the standard HDMI icon when you switch cables, which has much higher latency than when it's in PC mode.

My 'used' 201388-GRY arrived today. Here's more information on how to tell the two versions of 201388 Cable Matters adapters apart:

(1) Cable Matters Model 201388-GRY (on the outside of the box). This adapter has Model No. 201388 on the aluminum case. This contains chip VMM6100.

(2) Cable Matters Model 201388-A (on the outside of the box). This adapter has Model No. 201388-A on the aluminum case. This contains chip VMM7100.

For those asking, there is no solution for Intel MPBs. The best you can do is use patch-edid.rb to get 4K 60 Hz RGB.

FYI for those trying to order the 201388-GRY model from Amazon (US), it appears they are out of stock at the moment. I did reach out to Cable Matters support and this was their response - hopefully the VMM7100 chip will get a firmware update soon! Ordered the 4XEM cable in the meantime, should arrive sometime this week.
