.

Pretty good score for the price, it matches the GTX 780 in Luxmark score.

Simply plug and play, it was choppy. I modified AMDRadeonX4000.kext by adding the RX 480 ID 0x67df1002 and all is well. Interface speed and video playback is what you'd expect on a Mac with Metal running.

How did you get your thing to be x16? As I mentioned above, I recently installed the RX 460 and all is well except for error reading devices under PCI in System Report. And, the PCIE Lane Width is only x8...

It could just be an error in reading rather than an issue.

That's cool. A GTX 780 was a high end card at the time. They're really good at making GPU's these days!

Aside from the "reading error" of x8 PCIE Bus Lane and System Report can't report what is connected to the PCI slots... I'm content. Browsing the web, watching youtube, seems snappier. And, most of all, I did the ultimate benchmark of editing in FCPX and no crashes. So, yeah. Faster than HD5770 and also runs cooler and consumes less power. I idle at 135 watts with just safari running. I use to idle at around 165 to 170 watts with the HD 5770....

@namethisfile I'm not sure why your RX 460 is running at x8 in Slot 1. Both Slot 1 and 2 should be x16. Does your RX 460 require a PCIe power cable? I've seen some that only draw power from the PCIe slot.

I tried this XFX RX 460 and my Mac Pro could not boot with it.

It's not an error, it's a feature: The RX 460 has only 8 lanes. :D

Interesting! What about Error reading PCI device under PCI in System Report? Is there a way to fix that?

No. The Gigabyte RX 460 4GB Windforce edition doesn't require any PCIe cables. It runs off of the PCI slot.

I think the Gigabyte one is the one that works for RX460 for some reason. I don't really know what that is.

pretty cool that they are working in seirra. once i upgrade past my 1,1 i might geet a 480 running a gtx 950 in my mac pro 1,1 amazing how well they are proforming.

Anyone succeed installing xfx rx 480 gtr in mac pro? I have ordered one because it was the cheapest non-ref in my region, and now I start to bother if the backplate is detachable, and if not would it fit safely. If there is no one with the gtr I'll let you know by myself on next friday how it fits.

It's cosmetic. Don't worry about that.

In my experience, it's a bit random. If I boot my 7950 from the PC ROM, it occasionally shows that error as well, but not always. And it won't affect any function.

Did you try booting into a different partition or from a USB? (holding alt key)

Best

Don't get too excited about reports of seeing the Apple logo and last stage of boot progress bar. The drivers load sooner is all. There's no Boot screen for non-EFI GPUs.

I tried one and it worked. The custom cooler is great. The fans sit idle until you throw heavy tasks at the GPU.

Did you mount it in slot 1 with backplate on? That would be great news, because gtr is one of the best custom rx 480's!

Apple's boot manager won't load when no EFI display driver is present, so you can't use it blindly with PC cards.

This is something for the future if Apple released macOS into the wild. Boot managers can be configured to load when the drive kicks in as all Linux and Hackintoshers know. The fact we now see the OS loading is a positive sign.

I have bought the XFX Single Fan XFX RX 460 4GB which I am trying to make work as an eGPU. I am getting nowhere with it, and I will try to return it :(

Tomorrow, I might try it in a Mac Pro, but that will probably fail too..

Damn

I tried an XFX RX 460 with the single fan. It was no go inside the Mac Pro and AKiTiO enclosure.

Hello all, I've been reading threw this thread since last week when I picked up a Mac Pro 4.1 and was looking for gpu replacements. So far I've flashed to 5.1, added a lt 120 with Samsung sm951 512gb ssd. A 960gb Sandisk ultra 2 ssd (bay 1, data) a 250gb sandisk ssd (bay 2, windows 10 pro, games and tools) 64gb ram. 4 port USB 3 card. I'm almost done with hardware and decided to go ahead on the xfx Rx 480 with the higher stock clocks (1338Mhz)
It will arrive tomorrow and I will be testing it. Wednesday my thermal padding will come in to upgrade my 2.26 8 core to a 3.46 twelve core. At that time I will be running benchmarks under the latest OS Sierra beta. And if the single 480 stays solid by Wednesday, I'll be adding a second one. Just concerned by potential power usage under load. If anyone want benchmarks just let me know what I can run and I'll post the results here as soon as I can.

Thank you for the info :)

I am now down to one last option to make it work. I will post in this thread if I am successful, because that little RX 460 is a really nice solution for the Akitio Thunder2 without modifying the case at all.

Fingers crossed

Dual 470 is the safe bet. Power usage of 480 has already been measured in this discussion and it causes the PCIE slot to supply more power than the specs allow. This will likely not be fixed like it was on Windows because the driver development branch is separate and doesn't provide support for cMP.

I was just looking at that. Also fitting 2 of these cards would be impossible ATM and I would lose my USB 3 card. Has anyone used 2 rx470s in crossfire yet on there Mac Pro? I can report that my 3840 resolution is working great. Couple of pics later of setup when I get home
