Yeah no thanks. Using that in direct sunlight would be extremely difficult and it looks horrible on Facebook and Safari when the background is white and the navigation bars are black. Its not practical at all.

I do believe you meant 'touché'.

personally, I think dark mode would work it would just require some extra work from the developers which k don't see as a big deal. Speaking as a developer that actually has apps on the App Store, I don't think this would be that hard. 64-bit update was big but not that hard to do. Just time.

It's always possible. It's more a matter of Apple choosing to do it.

As far as apps go, many already offer a 'dark' mode.
I would love to put dark mode into my apps, it just sucks because I have no APIs from Apple so it's not easy...and to be honest, I am lazy. I don't want to create one if Apple will give us the tools for certain parts of our apps. Ya know?

I for the life of me, can not understand the need for a dark mode.

The level of desire from a minor vocal group of people seems to be aproaching a fanatic zealotry.

Not everyone wants to be blasted with white screen once the sun is down and it's dark out, or while in a dark room.

It's inevitable anyways with the looming change to OLED next year. As dark mode benefits the screen for better battery not having to power black pixels.

Do oled panels benefit only from totally black pixels or every pixel that goes in the black/darkish direction? I ask because the screenshots we know from the simulator arent really black at all, more a greyish theme. That would mean that there are no real benefits that make it possible only on new devices with oled panels. Sorry for my bad english I hope you understand what I mean.

Are you judging the black in the screenshots from a non OLED screen? Cause that would be pointless.

To answer the question though. I believe it has to be full black, not dark grey. Pure black pixel is an off pixel. I suppose dark grey could still use less power as it could use less backlight for that individual pixel. But I don't know if that's how it works in that scenario.

For optimal battery usage, it has to be a pixel FULLY turned off, I.e. Completely and utterly void of color.

HOWEVER, OLED isn't either on or off, so a dark gray pixel still saves more battery than a fully white pixel.

Alright thanks guys.

Theres still hope that they release the dark mode with the final version of ios 10. I remember that apple released some features in final versions that weren't available in the betas. Like completely new sounds and wallpapers with ios 7

What's the problem with having a simple option so that people can choose for themselves again?

I love this strawman argument that, being against the need for a dark mode, means you are against "options" and want to take a feature away from others.

But there has been a vocal minority beating the drum lately for a dark mode. These same people need to realize that there may not even be an option be in development. Apple can only spend so much of their resources on new features for new iOS versions. I think Apple would rather go for a feature that would appeal to a wider range of users, than a feature that requires redoing every stock app, as well as now requiring/highly recommending that app devs provide two sets of color designs for their apps.

Seems like they've been heading that way anyway based on the latest design of the clock app and the dark mode options already found within iOS.

Sounds like the strawman is really more about trying to make it out to be a strawman than anything else.

The topic of a dark mode isn't just something popping up lately. People have wanted it since iOS 7 when everything went bright white.

There have been proof Apple is working on it. Code has been discovered in the iOS 10 beta 1 release and ran through iOS simulator in Xcode. Showing Settings app running in dark mode, messages running in dark mode and even dark mode as an actual option IN settings.

There already is a "dark mode" of sorts on the iPhone:

Go to Settings > General > Accessability > Invert colors.

Yeah anything with a lot of color is kinda freaky, but boom.... Instant "dark mode".

I'm kinda bummed that we didn't get an official dark mode, but I'm sure we will get it when it's ready.

Unfortunately that reverts all colors including those in photos and videos as well as those that are already dark making them light, so it's of limited use in that sense.

I don't understand threads like this.

Why do some, like the OP, get so angry about a potential additional feature that many owners would like to see implemented?

It would be a toggle anyway, so would not affect anyone who did not want to use it in the slightest.

Personally I despise the bright white & have done since iOS 7, so I would use Dark Mode constantly.

To clear up any confusion, Dark Mode would only adjust the menus and backgrounds like the vast white blank space on this forum. Pictures on websites would be unaffected.

I say bring it on for iOS 10 please!

To me, this is more likely a case of, Apple may have worked on something and pursued it. The code was put into live versions of Xcode and various other apps, and that is all this is. Something that was thought of and remnant code made it into a beta/live version and was datamined out.

If you play WoW, you'd be really used to this type of situation, their Moba battleground rings a bell right away.

Dude, not to be rude, but we can send people on the moon and space probes on pluto. And then you tell us it's impossible to make a dark interface on an iPhone... ?

Who said it isn't possible; pretty sure the argument is it isn't needed.

So this is holdover from not liking the iOS 6 -> iOS 7 changes?

I miss the skumorphism too, but really it's been three years, it is time to move on.

It was mentioned here and had a screenshot (one SS showed the option in Display & Brightness settings and the second SS showed a pop up after trying to toggle it saying something along the lines of "Dark Mode can not be enabled currently".

However the link doesn't work anymore as it seems where it links to has been taken down and can no longer see the SS's.

Ah. Okay. No worries. Hopefully we'll see it in the next beta.

Clearly it's "ridiculous" and "isn't possible!"

It is ridiculous, that looks stupid, what could you possibly benefit from having the top and bottom bars black when the webpage is all white! -_-"

The design is supposed to be that if the browser is white your in normal mode, if it's black you're in private mode.
