Probably not AT&T specific, but I have Personal Hotspot issues with mine. For me the iPhone will not properly connect to the client device and service the device with internet. To get it to work, I would need to disable the Physical SIM line, turn off WiFi, disable the eSIM line, turn the eSIM back on, turn on WiFi, enable Personal Hotspot, connect the devices, and then I can turn the Physical SIM back on.

I also had hotspot issues, I tried the data roaming on suggestion and it didn’t help, I didn’t even know about your rather complicated method so ended up just going back to physical sim for now.

At least everything works reliably with physical sim in use.

I wish there was a toggle in control center to easily switch between data provider

All they have to do is go borrow a dual sim Android phone from someone and see how it works :(.

Data line, choice of line for calls and choice of line for sms. It really shouldn’t be as hard as Apple have made it...

AT&T eSim Update!

TL;DR Version: I got an AT&T authorized retailer to give me an eSim.

So, I live in the middle of nowhere, and my closest "big town" is 45 miles from me. They have 2 corporate stores, and 2 authorized retailers. I went on Wed, Oct 30, the day after iOS 12.1 GM dropped to try to get a card. 1 authorized retailer store told me that that wasn't such thing and that I was wrong that they ever would exist. The other authorized retailer seemed knowledgeable-knew what it was, but politely told me that they hadn't received any yet, but expected a shipment in a few weeks. The 2 corporate stores were staunch in their decision that I couldn't have a card, even though they told me that had them in stock, from the moment I walked in the door. In fact, the first corporate store manager called the other second corporate store manager as soon as I left to make sure he didn't give me one at the other store. I left, somewhat defeated, (but slightly happy because I set off the alarm things on the demo phones before I left), and just figured I'd have to wait for a few months. But then, on a whim today, I thought "Why not call that one authorized retailer and see if they got their shipment in, and maybe didn't get the "no-sell" memo. I called them, and the girl that answered seemed like she knew exactly what I was talking about. I wanted to make sure she didn't think I meant a regular sim before I drove all the way over. I described the card: "Is it a blue credit card sized card with a QR code on it?". She replied "It sure is! You'll be the first one I sell, but I can save one for you if you'd like!" I told her yes, and practically ran out the door to get to the store before the closed. I worried if I waited another day, they'd get the no sell memo. Got to the store about 2 hours ago, she had the eSim waiting. Verified my identity, got my IEMI, picked my number, and BAM! I had service! Painless as that. Maybe took 5 minutes total. I don't know why the corporate stores were such jerks...maybe they were scared they'd lose their jobs. ANYWAY, I have 2 active AT&T plans on my phone now, both are working perfect. No issues with visual voicemail what soever. I am running a beta of 12.1.1 though, so maybe they fixed any issues with that? I don't know for sure, but I do know that I have both lines running, and I'm happy!

So, the take away. Authorized retail stores don't get memos, or just don't care about them. They also seem to have better training (or maybe a brain in general) than the phone and chat support. Also, corporate store managers are evil.

So, maybe, if you still need an AT&T eSim...call your authorized retail stores. Just have them go look in the drawer where the normal sims are for the eSim. You might have to describe it, but they probably have it.

T-Mobile is already using eSIM on iPhones in Austria and Bohemia. I wonder what is different here.

The support documents say you can have more than one eSIM, but only one of them can be on at a time.

Does anybody intend to use more than one eSIM, or has anybody done that?

I’ve done that. I have 1 regular sim and 2 eSim. You just select which ones you want to work. Toggle one esim on and it turns the other off.

One thing I've noticed on Dual-Sim / eSim, while receiving a call in CarPlay, it doesn't show which line the call is coming from.

I'm on 12.1.1 beta 2 and have reported this to Apple via Feedback app.

That would be important to some users.

It's funny that as thorough as Apple can be with so many things, they just don't "get it" with some other things.

I remember that once when Steve Jobs was asking why people were jail breaking, some of us said it was for call blocking.

Mr Jobs said something like, "It's a phone! Why would you not want to get a call!?"

I think its just a bug, or something that has been overlooked. I'm sure they will fix it.

I enjoyed your write up, recently I also had some fools at a corporate store who tried to act like they know more than Verizon's website

I'll have to call a Verizon authorised service provider or check with an AT&T store since I might go prepaid with them soon

I just tried using hotspot and it connected with no issues at all. I did turn WiFi off before turning personal hotspot on.

I'm using eSIM for my data. Physical SIM for voice only. Both are AT&T lines of service. If that makes a difference?

I've perused this thread a bit and I honestly don't know if I'm barking up the wrong tree here.

I'm trying to get my iPad Pro 11 activated. I have AT&T's Unlimited & More Premium "One Line." I used the quotes for a reason.

I have a GPS Series 3, on this same account. After my chat with 3 AT&T reps spanning most of the work day, I now even have a line for my iPad that is listed as unlimited. However, I cannot get the iPad itself on the network.

If I go to Cellular Data, it presents me with the Select a Carrier menu. If I touch on AT&T, the 'empty bars' icon will appear in the upper right hand corner. Some times the menu popup will load the options to add AT&T, sometimes it fails. At one point in Control Center, the Cellular icon was green and I had 4 bars. Remembering the "troubleshooting" I had done with the AT&T reps earlier, I restarted. Since then, no green, no bars.

I do not currently have an AT&T SIM in the iPad, this is entirely with the eSIM (or embedded SIM or what? Am I using the term wrong?).

Any ideas? I'm thinking of going to AT&T and requesting a regular old SIM since my account sure looks like I should have access (and I bet I'm paying for it already, too).

When you say under Cellular Data, you mean under the menu "Cellular Plans", right?
Are you connected to Wi-Fi when you do so?

No I literally mean, Cellular Data on in the left pane of settings. And no I'm not. I even asked the rep if I needed to be and they said no.

I can’t listen to voice mails on the secondary line like I see the duration of the left message and everything but the play button does nothing

Here’s a company offering PAYG esim in 60 countries.

https://esim.plus/home/index.html

Seems legit as well, there are press articles about them.

I’m pretty sure you need to be connnected on Wi-Fi to activate the esim.

Ok why does everyone keep saying "get" an eSim as of its something physical you can pick up!?

Unless I'm missing something, the eSim is BUILT INTO THE PHONE, while the physical slot is them left for whatever Sim you want to place there.

Am I missing something!?

You need to get a QR code from a carrier...which from AT&T is on a blue plastic card

I'm on T-Mobile so I don't have first hand experience, yet, but I think what I'm going to find the most useful is to put both my numbers into eSIM and just switch between them.

I don't have coverage problems and don't really need two active numbers at once.

As it turns out, I just needed to get a physical SIM from AT&T. I stopped in on my way home from work and now all is well. It seems so stupid that the carriers can't work with the one Apple builds in.
