The car analogy would be the US telling Tesla or GM that they have to support CarPlay (or Android Auto, or whatever...).

Maybe, what’s the taxes Apple Pay’s on that? vat, income etc? Because that would be the EU effective number if apple left.
It’s not entirely accurate data as this is based on an average tax rate of 21% from most EU states.

Apple should leave the European union, a company has a RIGHT to decide what goes on within it's platform, don't like it use windows!!! Want an Apple product in the future 3rd party resellers will feed your needs!!$$$$$ Hey EU keep shaking the hornets nest!!!

So you are basically saying a company should have more rights than people? Wth

They also already charge for iPad OS and iOS when they sell the device and trying to double monetize the platform by also charging developers to access it is kind of double dipping.
Have you have ever seen Nvidia's licensing on VDI? First you can only use a set amount of GPU's they make.
You have to provide 1GB of ram to each VM minimum. You purchase the cards of course AND pay another license for how many VM's you're going to run.

Double dipping.

So EU regulated revenue would be less than that? Maybe 10% less

Yep - as mentioned before Apple defines Europe as the EU, but also a bunch of non-EU countries like the United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey, Switzerland, Norway, and Ukraine. More importantly, Apple’s “Europe” includes the entire Middle East. So 25% is not just the EU. Unfortunately. we don't know how much.

However, we do know that the EU accounts for 7% of App Store revenue. Which to me seems like a pretty good estimate of total revenue (why would EU users spend less on the App Store than other customers around the world?). But it's not exact and maybe there is something I'm not thinking of.

I don't think Apple will pull out. But, if the EU starts fining them 20% of global revenue, I could see a scenario where Apple plays a game of chicken and says "we're pulling out because your government wants us to turn iOS into Android and although we've made a good faith effort to comply what they're asking goes against our DNA" and then hope that users in Europe complain enough that the regulations are changed.

Again - don't think it'll happen, the PR hit would be too great; but if the EU revenue is even twice the 7% of App Store revenue and they're getting fined 20% of their global revenue - I could see math being done in Cupertino.

Why isn’t Apple just increasing the developer fee? I have been wondering why it is still at 99 bucks after all these years anyway while a Big Mac or even an iPhone has doubled in price at this point

Apple is far from perfect, but their products are unique and work well in my opinion. I understand the EU regulation but the fact is that there are reasons why it has possibly been centuries since anything innovative other than art, food, or war came out of Europe.

Adding cars, I love German cars. I love Europe actually. But the regulations are heavy handed. It’s like they want Europe to mainly be a museum.

They actually stopped charging a fee for developer registration last year or the year before. It was really an insignificant amount of money anyway.

Can't wait until these same regulators pass a law demanding that Apple build a backdoor into their encryption that only the good guys can use.

You mean like the ones the Bush, Obama and Trump administrations tried to force on Apple the past 20 years???? LOL

I’m American but honestly I’m dumbfounded by the attitudes so many of my compatriots take on stuff like this.

As if the US is insulated from any regulatory stuff.

But the ‘spirit of the law’ should not be the enforceable law. If the ’spirit’ and the law are not synchronous, then the law should be changed.

In what way are they not synchronous? The law said Apple had to allow 3rd party marketplaces, and in response Apple allowed 3rd party marketplaces with a myriad of terms, conditions, rubber stamps and fees that defeat the entire purpose of a free market.

Fantastic news

It's time to start with some ramifications for the continual blatant disregard for the spirit of the EU regulations and their intent

Apple apparently thinks they can just make a mockery of regulations
It's time to remind them who's in charge in a jurisdiction (not them)

Well said. Their core technology charge is an absolute disgrace

As far as I can see they still charge? the free developer access is comparitively quite limited to proper enrolment.

Maybe Apple should abide by the law since they are going to need a boatload of lawyers to defend themselves against an upcoming discrimination lawsuit filed by their women employees.

So Apple has to give their Engineer's time to other developers for free? It's like these regulators thinks that there is no cost to building these APIs.
No. They just cannot hinder other developers from using their platform. That's the point. You don't see Microsoft or Google pull this kind of nonsense. And even disregarding that; let's not pretend that even that isn't an investment for Apple's own benefit too.
