Nothing is perfect, technology included. Even if you spend money for it. It will always be that way.
I used to think that way, but given that we have paying a high price, and apple markets their products as a premium experience/quality, I do expect them to be defect free.

The iPad Pro cost me a lot of money, and apple is making a nice profit on my purchase, the least I can expect is to be sure I truly get a premium product and experience (and in my case I have - vary happy with the IPP).

On the eye fatigue front, I spent last night reading on my iPad instead of my Kindle Paper White, and found no issues with prolonged reading. On one hand reading on such a large display was wonderful, but on the other hand, the hand fatique increased more then it had with the tiny little kindle paper white tablet.

As for the eye fatigue, I do think it is very person-dependent. Looking back, I found folks on forums complaining about fatigue on the 9.7 ipp as well. If people want the 10.5, give it a try to see how your eyes respond. I will try again in the fall.

I spent about 30 mins with one of the new 10.5"s yesterday and I won't say I had eye fatigue yet, but something about it was bothering me a touch. I really can't pin it down, but I spend TONS of time with my 9.7 iPP and never have I felt that way, so something about the new tech was giving me a slight bit of "strange".

I find that ominous as I'm someone that's had to change monitors many times over the years if one is bothering me at all, etc.

I simply don't want any display devices that even hint at bothering my eyes during usage.

I read somewhere (could have been this forum) of speculation about bezel colors for the iPad 10.5 and eye strain; that one bezel color could be more problematic than another.

I propose we keep track of the iPad 10.5 bezel colors that people have tried, in order to determine if there is a pattern.

Please state the following:

1. Whether you owned it, or you tried it out in a store
2. Bezel color: black or white
3. Your experience with it, and any additional comments you want to add

Is this going to be in any way changed when iOS 11 is released? I mean, will the new iOS mitigate these side effects for the ones who complained?

I guess they could change something but the cause of the eye strain would have to be determined before they could come up with a fix and likely different people are having eye strain for different reasons. At best they may offer people some new setting that might help.

Time will tell, I am looking forward to 11 and the new file system. I have read for hours on my 10.5 and find it no different as far as eye strain than my previous iPads. The ProMotion still impresses me to no end!

Anyone know if the dpi is the same across iPads? Is it dependent on the screen size and resolution and not really the ppi

Sorry for going technical but eye fatigue on the 10.5 it being a new size might have something to do with dpi. With android nougat I can easily adjust which really helps out on some of my android devices.

10.3.2 converted the storage to APFS when you updated. You didn't have a choice.

true, but the file system that was mentioned a few posts above regarding iOS 11 is probably this from the article I linked.

"The company is also launching a new app called Files, which brings desktop-style file management to iPad. The app brings together all your files and supports nested folders, tags, search, etc. Files also supports iCloud and third-party storage providers like Dropbox and Google Drive."

File management application ≠ file system. Those two things are very, very different. Besides, it's not like the Files app gives you root access or anything. It basically just gives you a Files sandbox that you get manual control over and can share with other sandboxes, assuming those sandboxes support the file handling with their respective apps.

call it what you will but the system for managing files is changing with iOS 11 on the iPad.

Not that much really.

The files app can be ignored entirely and everything will function the way it always has. And other apps need to have file handling capabilities for the Files app to be able to serve files to them. They are also still separate sandboxes, although APFS means you won't have to duplicate the file into each app's own sandbox, which is nice.

PS. Files is also coming to iPhone, not just iPad. It replaces iCloud Drive

Sorry ment to say Files. It is what I have been waiting for and will make my iPads much more useful.

Out of curiosity, how do you consider them "much more useful" with Files?" I mean, is it nice, sure. But I don't personally feel like it increases usability by that much. (I'm on 11). For that, webpages would have to be able to summon the document picker, and as of now, they don't seem to be able to.

Did you make any adjustments before reaching this conclusion? Ominous :)

Being able to have a proper file system where we can utilize some of the memory for storage would be helpful to me. Apple has never allowed such a thing except for some work around. I use one of my 10.5 iPads out in the field and sometimes so far out in the boonies that my cellular will not work. I need access to my company's customer contracts, over 4500 with double that archived. Also need images taken with a file manager to keep them in order, sometimes hundreds of progress images a day. Moving these images around in Apple's way is a pain.

You do not find a real file system nice to have?

How did we go from eye fatigue to file system?

Argh, back on topic please. Anymore folks return the 10.5 due to eye fatigue?

I think all this random eye fatigue has to do with the fact that some apps and websites are not completely optimized/resolution independent. Even the front page of macrumors has slightly blurred text on the new 10.5 iPad. Yet the forums is crystal clear.

So the randomness of sites/apps is probably throwing people's eyes off who are more sensitive to these things.

We are also dealing with the "randomness" of humans who all see things differently. Some here, like me, have had zero problems with eye fatigue while others are struggling with it.

Agreed. I definitely notice something was wonky until I figured out certain text on the web was a touch fuzzy but I don't have any significant issues with it. Though it's more annoying than anything. Facebook app is quite noticeable. But I expect they'll fix it as fast as they've added split screen (so never).

Fyi, I said I would wait until Fall, but not being I patient... I decided to try one more time. The 10.5 I received this time (third one) has lost the yellow hue which was washing out text, and there is no eye fatigue with this one. TT is working better, and the brightness is now on par with my 9.7 Ipp so I can dim it and still see text. I have got to think there are defective panels out there. This latest one is very, very good.

Eye fatigue I think would also be dependent on the overall screen brightness, the duration of how long someone is looking at the display for, how close are they looking at the display and other factors. It's a really difficult thing to measure with eye fatigue and also every body has different strengths and weaknesses with vision.
