I don’t really know what exactly has changed to alleviate my particular circumstance, but I am glad it is different enough for me
I’m glad you’re able to use the phone , would you mind sharing your setup? (Brightness level, night shift, true tone, white point, etc?)

I got that info from notebookcheck’s iPhone X review:
“We can measure a comparatively low frequency of 240 Hz as soon as the luminance is at 50% or below. Sensitive users should get the iPhone 8 / 8 Plus with an LC display, where we did not determine PWM. In addition to the 240 Hz PWM, we can also measure a slight flickering at 60 Hz (see screenshots below) at higher brightness levels (even at the maximum).”
Interestingly, they don’t seem to mention this “60Hz above 50% brightness” in any other iPhone review. Should I remove it from the list? I’ll admit I don’t know much about the specifics of this 😅

I understand. I don't think you should remove it. If they measured 60 Hz flicker that was probably the screen refresh rather than PWM, but it's still flicker that may affect sensitive users. 60 Hz is probably low enough to be an issue for epilepsy too, however the amplitude is probably not great enough to trigger an epilepsy siezure. I'm not an expert in epilepsy by any means, this is just my thinking. If someone with more knowledge of epilepsy has anything to add then please go ahead.

Something I would like to know is how the flicker amplitude changes at fixed brightness levels when displaying different colors, especially grayscales. Even if there is barely any flicker at 100% brightness while displaying white on many phones, I assume there would be more if for example displaying 20% gray at the same 100% brightness.

The 11 Pro is just small enough and light enough to be a little bit more pocket friendly and easier for me to hold. But my XR isn’t too bad, either.

I’m getting used to the size of the 11, but not the weight... and the 11pro is just 6g less... is the same.

The problem I see with pwm is that maybe affect to everyone but someone’s we are sensitive so we can detect the issue, but that doesn’t mean it not affect the rest of the people that don’t get any symptoms...

Is like a skinny person eating bad and thinking that is healthy because it doesn’t have the symptoms of a fat one...

FWIW, my eyes have fully adjusted on the 11 Pro. No signs of eye strain or migraines and I’ve logged significant screen on time with it by now under a variety of circumstances. I’m definitely keeping it and packing up my Xr for trade in.

It’s a lot better especially now that I’m only using Face ID to unlock the phone and not trying to authenticate all of the accounts I transferred over when I started this up fresh.
This is great to hear! I was having issues when I first started using the XS Max, then went to the XR and was surprised when I had issues with that as well. So I went back to the Max and decided to just keep it and let it grow on me. It did. However, if I use it for LONG periods of time, I start to get a slight headache.

I ordered the Pro Max a couple of days ago and scheduled for an early to mid October delivery. So I can't wait to try it out.

So I went to the store today and used an 11 Pro for 15 minutes, concentrated on the phone, watching videos, reading articles; I played with the brightness from low (really low) to medium set.

I felt like dry eyes for the first seconds and then I was fine. Can´t tell if it´s great or not... also I am a little suggestionated for all this issue so perhaps I was "wanting" eye strain?.

The store also has full bright lights so is not a normal situation. Sadly they don't have the XS on exposure to compare; but I remember than watching the XS gave me eye strain in a few seconds.

I can´t tell If I want the Pro... the size is better than the 11, the little differences in height and width make something on the feeling.

The fact is that I don't like those black bars that pass by when you watch the screen with another phone... don´t know if they can hurt or not my eyes, but I don´t like it.

At least for some people, for some things, if they believe something is wrong, they'll physically develop symptoms. Don't laugh, it's happened to me more than once on different occasions
That’s my struggle precisely. I went into this fully aware of the issue with almost an anxiety that I’d be affected. I can’t just flip that switch. I could have symptoms that are explainable such as pollen, dust in my eyes, sleeping wrong, etc but I’m likely to blame the phone now. I too have brought on symptoms, in my case due to worry, only to have them completely disappear after a clean test result. If the 11 had a telephoto lens I’d already switched. But that’s obviously not the case.

Notebookcheck’s review of the iPhone 11 Pro states that “[the] display backlight flickers at 290.7 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 99 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.”

Has anybody confirmed this? Sometimes Notebookcheck’s intent gets lost in translation since the articles are originally published in German. It would be useful if they posted measurements at 100% brightness, or a video like they did on iPhone X.

As long as you can return it, why not? Apple's return policy is very generous. I'm not sure about other vendors. Remember that carriers can make it difficult in practical terms to return a phone and most charge restocking fees.
I paid $50 restocking when I had to return my max to T-Mobile last year. That, and the salesman looked at me like I was an alien because I told him it gave me a headache.

I think it’s the wrong thread.

The thread is about the X Series and not the 11 pro.

and in my opinion it’s hard to measure 100% with 11 pro.
i think it’s always dimming until you watch HDR content in bright sunlight.
Then they boost the display to 100% without dimming.

This thread is basically the catch all for OLED PWM discussion, it’s not limited to a single phone or anything.

In fact, I wish there was a way to rename the thread since it’s no longer just about the X. Not to mention, the OP hasn’t posted in almost 2 years.

Just ordered the 11 128gb black. Would have bought the 11 pro if only my eyes were fine with the OLED. The 11 pro has the perfect size and i hate my Xr for being a tad too big and heavy.

just a shame the didnt make a smaller iphone 11 like 5,5 or even 5.2 inches.
Hope Apple does some trick with PWM that will make it usable for the other 10%

It’s likely that Apple does not give a rip.

All of Apples current notebooks now have PWM :/ (It’s not just OLED)

OEM’s need to back off on these power efficiency tricks.

I fully understand that it is implemented in most if not all OLED handheld displays. Its probably a byproduct of tryino to keep the display cool and avoid excessive burn-in.

I have no clue why Apple would implement it on thier notebooks. (Aside from battery life claims)

I am extremely happy to have the iPad Pro 12.9 3rd Gen and Xr. Otherwise they would have completely isolated me out of their current ecosystem/lineup

So I went AGAIN to the store and played 15 minutes with the 11 Pro, as I said before, I feel like dry eyes the first seconds and then it´s OK.

I ordered a 11 Pro (5,8) today and arrives October 11; I will test it and post here.

I definitely like the size much better than my 11. The almost 1 cm on height and 0.5 cm on width make it much more comfortable.

The weight is pretty the same as the 11.

Yes the 11 is a little bit to big :( So sad... For me I haven't had that much problems with the display comparing to the X or Xs. But I didn't like the OLED color-shift. If I don't have it straight to my eyes it started to shift into blue :(

That "little bit" made me sell 2 iphone Xr and now the 11.
