After 2 days I´m on the fence... is like something isn't right with the OLED; is not eyestrain and headache, but something is. Using the LCD after the OLED feels like a relieve to my eyes and head.

Is a 1200 dls game, it should be easier, never had to do this to choose a phone, is quite absurd.

Something tells me is better to adjust to the size of the 11 and not to accept the screen of the Pro.

I agree. Go with the 11. You will have more peace of mind. Listen to your eyes. Take care of them.

So I went with the 8 way back when, but checked this thread out of curiosity on occasion. I went with the 11 Pro this year for the camera, I just got it earlier this week. After using it for a few days (actually noticed it right away), I'm definitely experiencing something. I wouldn't exactly call it eye strain, no dry eyes, etc., and I tried to tell my wife about it, and she asked what it felt like, and I finally figured it out.

Motion sickness. I'm very prone to motion sickness. I take dramamine/bonine when I fly, I pop one of those pills daily AND wear seabands when we do cruises, etc. And obviously motion sickness comes from something out of sync between your eyes and your brain/body, and that's what it feels like using the 11 Pro screen. I don't know if part of it is just the larger screen itself (coming from a non-max screen), that my eyes have to move more to track the movement of the text? Or it is from what everyone here is experiencing? Not sure. But I'm almost tempted to pop a bonine and give it a try.

Yes, maybe go back to the 8, I really want a smaller phone.

This can't be good:

Can you test it first somewhere?

If the XS gave you nausea and headache, maybe the Pro would give you some symptoms. I found the Pro way better than the X, but not enough, I´m having a little headache now.

I don´t want to play with my eyes.

I´ll keep the 11 or maybe go back to the 8 for size and weight.

I really don't think anything has changed with these displays regarding PWM. But the itch probably won't leave you so if you can buy from an Apple store then if it's doesn't work out just return it. If you don't have this option then try and seek out a shop were you can play with one for at least 20mins to see how you feel.

What is that??

Here you can see some vids I made showing the pulse.
Here you can see a video of the Pro Max in slo mo. This is an extreme example because the screen has dimmed itself from 90% brightness but it shows extreme diagonal lines/strobing. This is what our eyes are seeing whether it affects your eyes or not.

Google drive video one link

Second video shows the background strobing/flashing and has faint diagonal lines. This is not as noticeable as screen has not dimmed but again this visual effect is stimulating my eyes at least in a negative way.

My take on OLED technology in general:

I’ve had three LG OLED TVs now and they are fantastic. I might even use the word “perfect” to describe them. The picture is beautiful and color accurate (even without me having to perform a full calibration with my colorimeter). After watching hours of content, my eyes don’t even get tired. I could go on, but I’ll summarize by saying that I’m not sure how a display could get any better.

My point in stating these things is that OLED technology is wonderful. (I’ve never even seen image retention on any of my TVs.) The problems begin when you confine OLED to a battery-powered, mobile device. There are limitations, and clearly these manufacturers have made compromises.

I will never buy an LCD TV again, but at this point, I’ll never buy an OLED phone either. I hope Apple (and more importantly, Samsung, LG.Display, and all of the other OLED panel manufacturers) engineer a solution that doesn’t require use of PWM and still achieves the same picture quality.

After nearly two weeks I can honestly say I can tolerate the screen of the Pro Max whereas the X and the XS Max I could not. Either Apple changed something, or something with me changed, but I’m very happy about this. I was hoping not to have to use my 8 Plus a third year in a row. I did try out the regular 11 and really disliked it so the 8 Plus would’ve been my second choice behind the Pro Max. Good luck to those still seeking a solution. I’ve felt your pain ‘literally’.

What did you dislike about the 11? Just curious.

I got the 11 Pro myself, but was very close to choosing the 11.

For me personally I didn’t like how narrow the screen is. But I have huge hands and have used a wider plus sized device for years. I felt the content and keyboard were cramped. I did also find the screen to not be as crisp as my 8 Plus. I’m not a spec chaser, at all. But the higher ppi of the 8 Plus was clear to me. Lastly, I kept going to use 2x zoom on the camera and it wasn’t there (obviously). I much prefer the 2x telephoto lens to the ultra wide angle lens. Just a bunch of little things that while may not matter to others, did affect how I felt about it.

Thanks for sharing. All valid points that sum up to an overall experience.

Wow! That's very helpful in understanding what is going on with these screens.

yeah , but testing the screen would take more than 30min at least..
and we don't have apple store in my country so there is no returning policy ...

did you test it at very low brightness ?

And Amazon?

I used the 11 (non pro) this afternoon and mi little headache has gone...

No apple OLED for me this year either, it was better than the XS but not enough, this toy costs above 1000 dls, it has to be a 99% great experience IMO.

That wasn’t my experience, when I had all those features turned off the Xr was still continually flashing IR light for absolutely no reason but at a lesser frequent interval. If you just left it on the home screen and recorded it you could see the continual irrelevant flash.

Seeing as the only other differences between the Xr and the 6/7/8 were more in industrial design, I figured that must have been the issue bothering my eyes as the display tech, etc were the same as the 8...

I’m wondering if they’ve changed this with this years 11/11 Pro.

Well, I did record it:
The only flashing with attention aware features turned off is the proximity sensor. At least that was what my testing showed. I'm curious if there's another factor that caused it to keep flashing for you

Yeah. I keep auto brightness disabled but I do use my phone at very low brightness levels indoors, especially if lying in bed. Even now I would estimate it’s at around 30% brightness.
Odd that your OK with those levels as 50% and lower is when the modulation becomes more obvious.

What about the camera downgrade though?

I imagine that played a role with the X and XS Max for me. My wife keeps her phone on what I lovingly refer to as eye-bleed. 100% brightness at all times. I can’t do that. Right now I’m in my room in the dark so it’s at around 20%. I’m not certain what has changed with this phone for me.

I wonder how your wife will get on with having macular degeneration when she's not much older...
