The MacBook M2 Air absolutely flickers. You can see it in this YouTube video here recorded in 720p 240fps with iPhone 7.

The laptop on the left is the M2 Air and you can literally see the flicker! Here is proof Apple is killing our eyes.

Credit to LEDStrain.org.
Notebookcheck tested the M2 MacBook Air both not to have PWM and not to use temporal dithering. I have however noted flickering in a few videos.

It doesn’t seem to bother me, whereas I get headaches with the 14” MacBook Pro practically instantly.

Frankly it feels like we’re wasting a lot of time and energy over PWM, but it’s equally frustrating getting headaches from new Apple devices.

Did you always get headaches on your 13 mini? Because my 12 mini was so bad I returned it the day I got it, but my 13 mini had been fantastic on my eyes up until a few weeks ago.
Yes. I wanted to get along with it. I used it for 2 weeks and kept getting migraines. When I turned it on again a few months later to get it ready for selling, I got a migraine within 5 mins. I'm now on the SE 2022 and can spend up to 2 hours in one sitting doom scrolling.

Look at this. The same Leaker now says that the next generation E6 from Samsung Display will have a higher PWM frequency than the new OLED Displays from chinese manufacturers with 2160 Hz 😯

Rumors says that Apple will use the new M12 generation from Samsung Display for the iPhone 14 Pro and Max. The E6 line use brands like Xiaomi. But the M-Line sits above the E-Line so someone could think that the new M12 generation, that could be also used by S23 Ultra, should also have such a improvement in PWM frequency.

This all is still only a rumor. But maybe there could finally come a big improvement in PWM implemention with the 14 Pro serie 😇

So is the idea that the PWM flicker is so fast that at some point it becomes imperceptible even to those of us with sensitive eyes? And it looks like this rumor suggests the flicker will be way way faster than the iPhone 13 flicker?

I’m going to give it a try since I’ve got a 13 Pro to trade in anyway. Even if I can’t really doom scroll on it I can use the camera and possibly have a satellite capable iPhone. My iPhone 11 and SE3 will still be with me for reading. Same for my iPad Mini.

My M1 Air screen gives me eye strain but no migraines. Thank goodness for small favors.

Yes the PWM frequency could be considerably faster and make the iPhone for more people usable. But i don´t think that a PWM frequency above 2000 Hz would solve the problem for all. For this we will need truely flicker free OLED Display.

And do we think that is possible? Likely? Imminent?

Samsung has delivered this year a new OLED Display for Laptops that works flicker free. So it should be also possible for smartphones. There is currently no clue when such a display could come out.
Man it would be pretty sweet to get rid of this brick of a phone, let's hope!

So do you think the new iPhone 14 will be any better ?
Unlikely but we can hope! Apple often talks about health… it would be an amazing feature for a small demographic. They’ve implemented features for small demographics before too though (e.g. blind people) so it wouldn’t be totally unrealistic, but I certainly am not expecting it.

It does seem that the rumor mill suggests the flicker rate will be improved so it may help a subset of people with this issue.

I don’t know. I tried all of the 12’s. I finally was able to use the 12 Pro Max I got. I forged ahead on the 12 mini and was able to use it but when I upgraded my 12 Pro Max for the 13 Pro it did something to me so I can’t use my 12 mini anymore.

In the past when members of my family and I have gotten the same model I have sometimes noticed one particular phone has a more tolerable OLED than another.

It really is a complete luck of the draw sometimes.

I’ve seen nothing tangible to make me believe it’ll be better. But there’s hope until there’s no longer hope so we’ll have to wait and see.

I know this much, for me it either works or it doesn’t. I refuse to hyper-focus and spend countless hours tweaking this, adjusting that, etc. I want a headache/eye strain free experience like on my 11, not analyzing every headache, how many hours are tolerable, etc etc etc. I guess I’m fortunate in that for me it’s cut and dry. It works or it doesn’t, I can determine that in a week or less, and live with it.

I'm Chinese. The auto translation is actually wrong. It means not higher than 2160hz.

So he says not higher than 2160hz but still rumored to be much improved?

The same leaker has recently say that the E6 will have a 1440 Hz PWM frequency. Not so high that hoped but still a big improvement. The question is if also the iPhone 14 Pro/Max with the M12 display panel will benefit from this.

What’s the current max refresh rate on the iPhone 13 line up?

The 13 Pro Max absolutely ruined my eyesight. I have never had issues. Slowly now that it's gone, my vision is improving. I didn't think I could experience such discomfort. It just affirmed it was time to go back to the Androids permanently. I can use an old iPhone for what it did to keep me connected to my husband.

I thought most flagship phones from all manufacturers use OLED with PWM now. Which Android phone are you using?
