Was just using my sisters 13PM for maybe 5 minutes and I’ve got a mild migraine… nice to see I can notice it pretty quickly now. 14PM here I come!

I’m ordering the one without my phone number where it says I can activate it with any number later… the idea being that I won’t deactivate my 11 in case I need to return the 14PM. The downside of course is that I don’t know how much I’ll actually get to experience the 14PM without activating it.

Thoughts?
That's what I'm going to try. Generally I have more problems at lower brightness, so I figure being inside where the wifi is will be a better test environment than outside where there isn't wifi.

That is my other dilemma lol. I am so torn on size that it’s making me dizzy. I have very large hands so that’s not so much an issue. But, I wear gym shorts most of the day and night now that I work from home, I think about going on my walks and jogs, putting it in pockets, etc. The max is a heavy phone. But at the same time that big screen (PWM aside) would be so helpful on my 46 year old eyes. Then I think, man it’s less private being so big. I don’t like how text renders on the regular pro compared to my 11 either. See, I’m beyond a mess lol.

If I ask 50 people, I’ll get 25 on each side of the fence. This shouldn’t be this hard.
Feel your mess.

There with ya.

We can get through this.

I love your positive attitude! It is refreshing (we in this thread have reason to get down a bit but outside of this forum people are getting cut-throat). I think I should get the Pro Max. I already know the Pro in size is doable. The Max is more of the unknown. So I should probably rule it out or in and then I won't have to second guess? But I have also wondered silently, could PWM be more noticeable the bigger the screen with that much more real estate flickering in your eyes? Eh disregard that. I don't want to go down that rabbit hole haha.

Oh yes I, too, take up residence in rabbit holes this time of year.

A couple of thoughts:

1. I vote definitely try the Max. It will give you a chance to find if you like the size and do well with the OLED this time around. One phone can help you with at least two decisions. (Maybe.)

2. If the slightly bigger screen of the PM bothers you/us, it’s probably not a healthy idea to use a Pro either. I imagine it in another scenario: yes it hurts more when you punch me than when you slap me, but really you shouldn’t be hitting me at all.

Thanks for the positive and the sharing. And yes I hear you on the cutthroat. Man, some of these threads. Even today I found myself going maybe I don’t need a new phone, maybe I shouldn’t try, and all that dispirited stuff. But after more overthinking, I have chosen (again) to try (again.) I’m not always positive. Life isn’t always positive. But I want to keep trying. And while I’m doing that, I want other people to feel like they can keep trying. As long as we’re not hurting anybody, I want us to try for what might bring us delight.

Sorry to say it but if iPhone 14 Pro Max pre-orders are still available by the time I grab my iPhone SE in the morning I may have to go ahead and order one.

Maybe just get the 14P at the store (or mailed to you) and give yourself the 14 days to decide. If you like it (i.e. can use it), take your 12P back to the store and have them apply the trade-in then.
That would be the ideal solution…But does it work?
How can I apply the trade-in value (at a local Apple Store) a week after I‘ve actually bought the phone? I never heard of that being possible…

Speaking from personal experience only, I have just walked into Apple Stores and said, 'I have a phone to trade-in, can you apply the credit to the phone I just bought?' If I was within the return period, they did it every time.

Weren’t there several in here who were fine with the 12 series but then the 13 series bothered them? Suppose I could go back and look. It’s all so hard to say. Seems like the logic we use for PWM improvement (higher frequency) hasn’t applied to everyone the way we expect. Man I’m so over this!! Btw, are you trying the Pro Max?
Yes I was one of them. I could use the 12 Pro Max and eventually, even my 12 mini. My 13 Pro was problematic for me.

Well, I took the bait. Ordered a 14 pro and should be here next Friday. I imagine I'll know by the end of the weekend if it's a go or not and will report back here. Fingers crossed, but I fully expect to be returning this thing.
Me too and my sentiments are the same. Pro Max purple 256 gb. I have a Note 10+ now through AT&T and it's fully paid. Their trade deal was so bad I'm changing to T Mobile where they are giving me $800 for the phone plus $200 for keeping my phone number. I didn't even know keeping your number was a thing. In any case I hope it works out but if it doesn't they'll take it back and I'll stay with the carrier. Their plans seem just as good or better than AT&T.

Great! Thanks…
I guess though it might depend on the specialist…but I‘ll give it a try…

I‘ll thoroughly check the screen out in store anyways and before actually buying it I’ll just ask if it’s a possibility and hope for the best… worst scenario I‘ll end up with a huge gift card…

After experiencing symptoms from PWM once I am always a little worried with new displays..

It’s crazy though…
I am using my 12P for hours these days (learning with digital flash cards… so lots of reading) and don’t even experience anything remotely like it… crazy how I couldn’t use the Xs for more than 20 min without having a nagging headache and tiered eyes…

The question is, will all of us have to pony up for the 14Pro as it's looking like the 14 is likely using the same OLED display as the 13 which means PWM hell. Those short clips from the event in slow mo are promising with no obvious signs of flicker but we shall see. Given the increasing awareness of PWM, I am surprised no-one at the event did a basic PWM test to rule this out - In order limbo until then

I also wish there were reviewers that looked into this. However, think the PWM issues is a bit of a niche thing and not something that is widely known or reported. Plus, I suspect these initial hands on opportunities at this event were a limited on time.

The only reviewer/YouTuber that I know of that routinely comments on this issue is Zollotech. He had issues with the earlier Apple OLEDs but has been ok with the more recent phones.

Wow that's great that you've been able to use one of the OLED phones. I've found each progressive model since the X is a little bit easier, but none has been pain-free. Hoping for this year to be better for all of us.

Yeah I'll be intrigued to see what he has to say.

I'm still thinking we didn't see any flickering on the early reviews because in that bright review room, those phones were likely at full brightness--and therefore at their least flickering frequency.

But I'm going to be hopeful.

If it doesn't work for me/us, we just return it and go from there.

I was in a corporate Verizon store yesterday reminding myself of the sizes. I haven’t been in this store in 3 years but surprisingly saw familiar faces still working there. I asked them about PWM and they looked at me like I was a talking penguin. I get the same look at Apple stores. I really question just how well this is truly known.
Talking penguin--love it!

Though it probably didn't feel great in the moment.

I get that, too. Many, many times have I shown my own slo-mo video to an Apple employee who has looked shocked.

One employee told me that if my screen flickered, it was defective and I should exchange it. I just nodded. Sometimes the hill is bigger than I want to climb that day.

I think we here can contribute to the cause by ordering the 14 then returning it with the explanation 'causes headaches. ' And if enough do that maybe something will change. There shouldn't be a cost to do this just a bit of inconvenience.

There's nowhere to note this while returning an iPhone, besides the Feedback form on Apple's site which I suggest all PWM-sensitive users to do regardless.

If it's any consolation, I have asked multiple people at Apple to ease my own mind and the conclusion is that there is no limit on returns.

They have the rare customer coming in to return ten iPhones at a time, or the ones on MacRumors that go through 27 devices to find one that they deem to be perfect. Of course this is extreme, unnecessary, and a case of OCD. Having owned numerous Apple products, there can be variance between devices but Apple is doing an admirable job of producing a consistent product.

I want to say it helps get the point across in some way, but I know that sales representatives don't mark it down and they don't ask a reason for return on the online store regardless so it just gets compiled together with all the non-defective customer returns.

I would however love to get the point across that I don't want to be returning these products.

That’s just it, I cannot imagine your average kid working at Apple gives a single **** why we are returning a device. They are there to get as many people in and out, within one what’s acceptable, as possible.

I think of it like this. The notch. It’s been bemoaned by countless influences, bloggers, forums, etc. So what did Apple do? They just found a way to keep it for yearssss to come. I cannot believe they care one ounce about us, the 1% of the population (because I think the other 9% have no clue it’s PWM giving them headaches) when it comes to their bottom line.

I ordered the iPhone 14 Pro and am hoping for an improvement. I still use the iPhone 12 Pro without any problems. A frequency above 1000 would be perfect. I use a Samsung TV with a PWM frequency of 960, and I have no problems. I hope that the experience can be transferred to a smartphone.

Me too 😝 I really don’t have the cash for this right now though so I’m playing mental gymnastics to excuse the purchase:
“it probably will still give me headaches so I’m probably just going to return it”
But at the same time “my iPhone 11 is terribly slow and the pictures don't compare to modern phones. I can’t keep this relic forever”.

iPhone 14 ProMax Space Black 256GB 😁

Can hardly wait to give it a try!
