Did anybody update from iPadOS 15.x to iPadOS 17 beta? I’m curious about dithering (but sure it will be there, it gives us moooooore colooooours!), but cannot risk updating my iPad Pro without being able to downgrade as I did with iPadOS 16

I'm also interested in that. My iPad (6th Gen) is perfectly fine with iPadOS 15, but I got eye strain after updating to iPadOS 16 (so I had to revert to iPadOS 15, being "stuck" there now). How is it with iPadOS 17 (or iOS 17 for that matter)?

I’m glad I’m not (completely) crazy 😂

Whatever is going on, I am happily using a Pixel 7a. I'm also successfully using an S23 Ultra. And my old S22 Ultra is one of the most comfortable eye friendly displays I own.

14 Pro Max display is kicking me in the head.

Kind of off topic but not, I finally saw NotebookCheck's Air 15 review and while I still do not fully trust their PWM info, they say it is PWM free just like the M2 Air.

I do miss ios. I can’t really actually take my iPhone out of commission I am in too many iMessage conversations right now. But it’s doing my head in.

I’m thinking of getting a refurbished iPhone 12 Pro Max since I used one successfully before. Unfortunately I can’t trade one of my existing iPhones in directly for a refurb. I get a gift card worth a fraction of the amount a direct trade for a new phone would be.

It still might be worth trying. I liked my 12 Pro max. I only traded it away ironically because the display was defective. It displayed a weird green glow instead of black in dim settings.

Hey @GrumpyMom (nice profile picture as usual), what phone are you currently using that is giving you headaches? I remember you had a couple of 13 minis. If you were able to use a 12 Pro Max, well, it could be worth giving it another try with a used one, but keep in mind that screen suppliers sometimes change over time, and even on the same badge some screens are more comfortable to use than others.

It happened to me on the three of four 13 minis I ended up trying. The first 13 mini I had was a starlight one that I was able to use during more than a month without issues. I ended up returning it because it was impossible to unlock the phone with Face ID using a face mask, at least back then.

A year and a half later, I bought a green 13 mini and I returned it after just two days. That screen seemed radioactive. in between, I’ve had other units that were better but not perfect and ended up straining my eyes eventually. So it’s a bit like a lottery, keep that in mind.

I’m on a 14 Pro Max. I tried my 12 mini again and it was better than the 14 Pro Max but it is still not quite what I can use. I may as well try the 12 Pro Max. I can return it if I need to.

I wish I could just go back to my iPhone 11 or SE 3 but the side effects from those phones are pretty weird. I lose a good chunk of my peripheral vision to a white flicker.

@GrumpyMom you could try getting a Blue Light screen protector; I've recently gotten a standard 14 (as it was on sale), and put on this screen protector: ZAGG InvisibleShield Glass XTR2 Screen Protector for iPhone 14

I decided to give this a go, as I had read of some other's having had success with this; and while I have only used it this past week, on and off, it is in fact not giving much trouble so far; will see how this goes over the next week(s)

Perhaps there is something to the Blue Light causing additional strain on the eyes for PWM sensitive people (I understand it does nothing to reduce the actual flicker)

I've been using the phone with standard settings so far (i.e. auto brightness, no RWP)

The only downside of that particular screen protector is that it isn't fully matte (it says it has anti-reflective properties, and it might have, but it still is a bit too much glare for me); so I've ordered a different one, that says it is fully matte; currently awaiting delivery

Thanks everyone for the cautions and suggestions.

I did go ahead with my husband's blessings and got a 256 GB silver refurbished 12 Pro Max. My old one was gold so I thought I'd try the other color I had once considered.

I deeply regret trading away that gold 12 Pro Max for a very temperamental 13 Pro that had one of the worst iphone cameras I have ever struggled with. And the worst pwm effects I've ever been subjected to. It was the 13 Pro that did something that caused me to become unable to use my 12 mini.

I figured it was worth a try. I'll return it if it doesn't work out. I'll miss the AOD and Dynamic Island on my 14 Pro Max.

I love my 14 Pro Max and had intended to keep it and not upgrade to a 15. I was doing ok on it, even well some days, but as time has worn on I've struggled with it making my head hurt past an hour of use.

It did not cause my latest round of migraines, but now that I have them, thanks to mold exposure and horrible weather, I get really debilitated when I just try to deal with simple texts on it.

I intended to move everything over to my Pixel but I'm communicating with a lot of people in iMessage conversations and sharing photos via AirDrop and icloud in addition to Google. It's hectic and I don't have time to make the leap gracefully. I tried and it was chaotic. I'm sure eventually it can be done but now isn't a good time for me to switch completely over to Android.

I'm not even sure I want to because of my Apple Watch.

Link of the new screen protector you ordered ?

Gave this one a try: iPhone 13 Anti Blue Light Privacy Matte Screen Protector

It's been quite difficult to find a matte, anti blue light one
What are your thoughts on it?

I haven't ordered any screen protectors yet. I do take a Lutein supplement which is advertised to help with blue light exposure but since I don't think such claims are regulated, I take my supplement with a grain of salt. 😉

My 12 Pro Max arrives later today. I'll see how it goes with that one. I already have a case and screen protector from my previous 12 Pro Max supplies.

I don't hold out any optimism whatsoever on this option. I'm just trying it. At some point in the future when I'm not coordinating things with other iOS-using parents and kids, I'll try to switch over to Android so that iOS is just an option I can choose and not a must-have situation.

Well, transferring my iPhone 14 Pro Max over to my 12 Pro Max went pretty smooth. I wish I could get a physical sim again but I don’t have time to go to AT&T and do that so I accepted the e-sim transfer, which was seamless.

I can’t say the display leaves me feeling normal. I feel something in my eyes. But my 14 Pro Max is instant extreme discomfort. I couldn’t really even look at it long enough to switch my Apple Watch over. I had to ask my husband to do it. And by comparison so far the 12 Pro Max is sufficiently bearable. I’m only cautiously hopeful at this point.

I did watch an Amazon Prime video on my 12 Pro Max. It looks good. If I stay at this level I’ll be able to use the phone a decent amount enough to use my shopping accounts that are logged in via Apple Sign In.

I’ll still save the bulk of my screen time for my Android phones.

This is my first refurbished iPhone. It looks completely new. I can’t tell it was ever owned by someone else.

What are your thoughts on it?

I'm still waiting on that particular one; the current one is not making me happy, mainly due to it being clear; I've gotten used, and much prefer, a matte screen protector; it's what I've been applied to all my phones in the past; the glare really does annoy my eyes

However, outside of that, I am able to use the 14 without significant issues; granted, I haven't spent a significant amount of continuous time on it, but what I have used it for, it isn't bad ... there is something that does feel slightly different to non-OLED phones, and I wonder if that is something that just goes over time

One thing, though, is the intensity of the light; everything just feels more bright and intense than non-OLED phones; I'm experimenting a bit with RWP to reduce the intensity, but I also wonder if that aspect of OLED phones is also an exacerbating factor for us

@GrumpyMom did you try the 14 non-Pro series? I ask, as the Pro series (presumably due to ProMotion), has a 2 - 3x higher flicker percentage across the majority of the brightness range, compared to the non-Pro versions. Perhaps this is also something that makes things worse for you; this is one reason why I decided to only try the non-Pro range myself

No I haven’t tried the non Pro 14’s. I wonder if I should have. I did quickly look at them in an Apple Store and did have trouble focusing on the displays in the store lighting.

The non pro 12 was worse for me than the 12 Pro Max a couple of years ago. The 12 Pro Max I’m using now doesn’t seem as intensely bright as the 14 Pro Max.

The 12 mini initially made me feel like I was being punched in the eyes and then I weirdly got adjusted to it and successfully used it until I got a 13 Pro, which made me really sick.

Hi all,

My trusty old ipad pro 12.9 (1st addition) is now too slow and I need to treat myself to a replacement.

Is there any difference to the screens of the 1st addition (Liquid display) comapred to the newer models (Liquid retina display) in terms of PWM? I would be looking at the 4th generation LED not the 5th generation Mini-LED.

I am very sensitive to OLED PWM as per most on this forum, however I can use my current model Ipad Pro for hours at a time without any issues.

I got the 12.9 and it gave me a headache in 2 hours. Sent it back and got the 11" and have had no issues with it. I don't know the technical aspects but it sure made a difference to my eyes!!

I believe the 2018 12.9-inch Pro was the last model to NOT use PWM.

The current 11-inch is still PWM free, as is the M1 iPad Air.
