Motorola OLED? I’m intrigued by the prospect of a flicker reduction setting.
Nope, LCD. They make OLED, but I don't even attempt it.

The weird thing is, I never had an issue with galaxy OLED from the S4 through the S8. Plus a OnePlus 3 and a Moto Z Play. All OLED, and no issues. But every OLED I tried a few years ago gave me a headache (pixel 3xl and 3a).

Maybe I'll give it another chance, I'm just burned out of hoping against hope for a solution from Apple. OnePlus 12 having a potential pwn solution is huge. Idk how well you guys know Android, but OnePlus makes amazing phones that are very close to pure Android. The only issue to some folks is the fact they're Chinese.

Ordering my wife and kids brand new pros, while I'm using my ancient 8 Plus. I haven't been active on here in years, because the fact I can't use these phones is demoralizing. I even experienced strain from an 11 lcd, and the se3. I'm really hopeful for the OnePlus 12. What I have done the last few years is to use my 8+ for texting, and a second android phone with my free line. I grab a new Motorola phone every year or 2. Pure Android, plus insane battery life. And the best part, they're all $300 or less. F this company for not giving us any solutions to pwn.
Good to hear from you again 👋

Can you tell us what Moto you are currently using?

As I’ve noted before, I have owned a PlayStation Vita with an OLED display and no issues.

Ugh, I’m getting the grittiness behind my eyes that some users have described but not the constant throbbing.

There was a moment I went case shopping and thought about keeping this iPhone 15 Pro in the beautiful Titanium Blue, but this will probably culminate in a return.

Have I mentioned that I’m the type of technology/display enthusiast that went out of my way to look at the first consumer OLED panel, which was a $2,499 monitor by Sony that was 11”?

That’s how excited I was about OLED…

Good to hear from you again 👋

Can you tell us what Moto you are currently using?
Moto Ace 5G. I'm also a massive fan of the Moto G Power series of phones. Ridiculous battery life. These cheap Moto phones have AWFUL cameras, which is the reason most people probably would pass. But the feeling in my eyes is exactly the same as my 8+. Literally feels like reading a book, where there is no strain whatsoever.

This phone is from 2021, and Moto only offers 1 android update (joke). It's getting slower by the day, but I paid $150 for it on a deal, so it's no issue. Moto just released a phone in India that I am hoping will get a global launch.

Moto G54 5G
256gb storage + micro SD
6.5" LCD
6000mah battery (!!!!!)
8-12 GB ram

This would last me 2-3 years happily. If it never sees the light of day outside of 3rd world, I'll grab a Moto G Power 2023 for $250 or less.

All I can say is, we better hope to whatever God we believe in that microLED screens don't use pwn. If they do, it's pretty much a wrap for us... I am too old to deal with ANY sort of discomfort from a phone. As excited as I was for the X and XS Max, it's been all downhill from there.

OnePlus 12
MicroLED

These are my only options. If not, I can happily use a decent Moto (or other Android option) LCD. And I do find that if I am not as excited about my phone, I use it less. Wife appreciates this 😂

I see a lot of mention of OnePlus. Have they mastered the flicker reduction, where it works well enough on these phones that most who are sensitive do just fine?

I haven't had an Android phone for nearly 10 years, and I have an Apple watch and other Mac devices, so it wouldn't be ideal to have an Android phone now- but I would be tempted to check out a OnePlus or something else if those are proven to be safe and Apple can't get their act together on this stuff in the next couple of years.

Also welcome back, @tonybarnaby. If it’s congratulatory to welcome someone back into an eye strain thread. It’s still nice to see a familiar u
The sad thing is, Apple is abandoning LCD entirely. The issue we face isn't common, but it's weird for someone with cash in hand to be basically excluded from using a product. And PWM only saves the manufacturer a small amount, from my understanding. But I guess a small amount x hundreds of millions of screens adds up.

I’m too young to be dealing with this, and at this point I’m almost skeptical that MicroLED won’t use debilitating PWM.

At least on the bright side by the time we can own an iPhone without sensitivity again it will have greater performance than a PlayStation 5, better cameras than a modern DSLR, and a display that outdoes the clarity of an IMAX…

Behold iPhone 25.

The upcoming OnePlus 12 (usually in February is when they launch) has some new rumored feature dealing with PWM. No idea if it'll actually be a reality, or if it will help.

OnePlus makes amazing phones and they have the fastest charging solution in the world. The OnePlus company is solid, and their Android solution (Oxygen OS) is very similar to what you find on Pixel, but even better. Solid camera too, but not on the Pixel level. And even the top of the line phone is under $1000. The specs are always insane too, ridiculous ram especially.

I believe my old buddy @GrumpyMom has some OnePlus experience and can vouch for their top tier specs. Again, the only holdup is the fact the company are Chinese and have hit or miss customer service. But probably not an issue now that stores like TMobile sell them. Back in the day, you could only buy from OnePlus themselves.

Were you using your new one since last Friday and after several days finally had an issue? Or how long did that take?
Yep. I used it all weekend just for reading though. Today I needed to email someone and that’s when my brain broke, having to put some thought into the email and simultaneously looking at the display.

You’ll notice my posts on this forum haven’t exactly been the works of a brilliant mind. In fact I sound even stupider than usual. That’s because I was already getting fatigue on my 12 Pro Max while following a thread and doing way more screen time than usual. (If I wanted any relief I’d switch to my S22 Ultra. Thank goodness I have that phone. My newer s23 Ultra gives more eye strain). All of screen time was giving me intense fatigue so that left me with little mental bandwidth for communication.

But I was feeling eye fatigue from the beginning with the 15 Pro Max. I wasn’t getting was headaches or weird sensations in my head or pain in my eyes. My eyes just felt very tired very fast. Until today, then the headache hit me. Damn!

No sorry my experience is with Samsung and Pixel.

Going to Android isn't the end of the world, if it comes to it. There are a lot of features on Android that will never see the light of day on an Apple phone. So many options and ways to get the most out of your phone. I'm fascinated by battery life, and you can track so many variables.

It’s going to be painful and I don’t want to be doing this, but I ordered a Motorola Razr+. I’ll enable the flicker reduction setting and report back.

I haven’t owned an Android phone before, and I’m so curious how my reaction will be to the PWM on that display. Maybe it will be fine. Maybe it will be as intense. Maybe it’ll make me ready for a foldable iPhone.

Strangely One Plus was making some of their earlier phones with a flicker free setting but abandoned them. The current line is awful for the eyes. Regarding the camera on the Motos, they are not good. Pretty much every review will mention it. They don’t do well with mixed lighting or night photography. The cover screen on my Razr Plus is no gimmick. I’ve used it quite a bit in the past week. The less I need to open a blaring screen the better. I’m typing all this on an iPad which I use more now than my phone. I have less than 60 minutes today on my phone.

You don’t have AT&T do you. If you get one from a store it’s $10 per month for 36 months. No trade needed no money down.

The samples of the cameras on the Motorola site don’t even look good.

I may just end up replacing my iPhone SE.

My last OnePlus was the 3. And yeah, Moto phones have embarrassing cameras. I've been married for 18 years, so I'm too old to care about selfies or Snapchat 😆

Buying a Moto phone when you care about the camera is the worst mistake you can make. I like mine purely for the fact I can work 16 hour shift on a single charge, and it's bloat free pure Android. The performance is severely lacking, though. Maybe not on the flagships, but I don't want an $800 Motorola

I’ve gotta say, even compared to iPhone 15 Pro the iPhone SE punches far above its weight as far as the single main camera is concerned. Apple has really done a lot with computational photography, as I’m still satisfied with the results of the A15 Bionic.

Also I loved iPhone 13 mini, so I have this optimism that of any Android I could try this would be the best combination of potentially offering flicker reduction as well as a foldable form factor that isn’t available on the iPhone side regardless.
