Did you ask which incell screen was installed ?
Unfortunately not, they had a lot of people in the store and they gave me back my phone, I tried it for 2 minutes, I paid and I left. They are very friendly though, if anyone is interested I can go back and ask.

The iPhone 16 reviews are out. And on some videos the screens are clearly flickering. On the standard iPhones with 60hz PWM that was normal. But I saw the pro models also clearly flickering. Makes me wonder if the screens are worse this year.

Do you have a link to one clearly flickering?

Remember- screen flickering seen when recording a video of an OLED screen is related to the synchronization of the camera shutter vs the flickering frequency.
If a horrible flickering monster screen was synchronized with the camera shutter, you wouldn’t see any vertical banding on the recorded video at all, but using the phone would still give the user a headache.

Whatever vertical scrolling banding you might see of an OLED screen that’s recorded…. It only means there’s some flickering that’s not synchronized with the camera shutter.

I realize the usual information we seek hasn’t been released yet, and personal experiences have yet to happen. That said, there’s no longer an ounce of me that believes Apple is concerned with addressing PWM. Not one. Best believe they are aware so to not take ANY steps towards alleviating or mitigating the situation is more than telling.

It flickers like crazy
Not great, but also meaningless. This could mean the rate is higher/lower. It’s all speculative now.

Flicker-free at every possibly shutter speed is ideal and may be what many of us need, but there’s no exacting way to determine if it‘s better or worse based on an arbitrary video.

I would say that that the rate looks higher which may pose less of a problem for more people, but again it’s nearly impossible to quantify without knowing shutter speed, frame rate, etc.

Looking through the reviews of this channel: Andro-news.com, I've collected a few phones, and their measured flicker ratio (based on the Radex).

Oneplus is a great company. Check out at 1.40. They are stating eye care protection on the press release of their upcoming event for oneplus 13. Even the YouTuber below is mentioning PWM.

If the iPhone 16 series is yet another bust - Oneplus or Motorola is where I will venture.

Hopefully more brands will start talking about it, and eventually Apple (or the OLED manufacturers) will feel compelled to change the way the technology adapts the brightness.

However, I’m still strongly convinced that PWM is not the only culprit of this eye strain problem, especially when other devices with LCD panel induce lighter, but equally bothersome effects on eyesight.

Awesome. This is the reason why i havent orderd any Android phones to try out. Lot of them are using like DC like dimming above 50% and not real DC dimming, so the screens still flickers. For some people this methode works but i don't think it will work for me. I read lot of promising things about the OP13 and Xiaomi 15 that will probably come out in december 24 or january 25. I also read here that OP is working for dimming methode of 2.160HZ of all brighntess levels. So im going to wait a little bit longer to try the phones of the otherside out.......

Not so long ago kids were playing in an asbestos sandpit (nobody knew of the long term health issues)

Is PWM the asbestos of its time? Will someone try and sue a major brand due to ill health?

So going by early reviews and Youtube vids posted on this forum, I have Honor Magic 6 Pro and Oneplus 13 on my list to try early next year.

All this visual Hell started 7 years ago with the iPhone X: The first OLED iPhone. That’s when this thread of doom started.

So the problem is likely related to one, some, or a combination of the hallmarks of OLED displays.

1. Pentile sub pixel arrangement
2. PWM flickering
3. Temporal dithering

In regards to PenTile sub pixel arrangement of the OLED display, the DPI of the screen is actually much lower than the specification states due to the way the pixels are arranged.
OLED iPhone specs state the resolution is 460 dpi, but in real world use when actually looking at the screen, the resolution is a lot lower.
This “graininess” of OLEDS could be a factor in eyestrain as well.

Back when I was writing about Android phones for a living, I blasted Pentile displays over and over again. No matter how high resolution they are, they look horrible! You are absolutely correct. They contribute to eyestrain.

Anyone checked the new iPhones yet?
Just setting up the 16PM as I type. Will report back ASAP.

Settings:
  • Reduce motion.
  • Limit frame rate.
  • Dark mode off.
  • True Tone off.
  • 50% and above brightness.
  • Face ID: Attention-Aware Features off.
Very quick impression:
  • Wishing I'd got the Pro as the Pro Max looks massive.
  • The fit and finish are exceptional.
  • Feeling a little bit of bottom of my stomach queasiness already.
  • I switched on "Limit frame rate" as my eyes relax/unfocus when I scroll. With 120hz my eyes are constantly focused which I think contributes to strain.
Note: I've been unable to use any OLED iPhone since the X and I've tried nearly all of them, so I'm very sensitive to whatever is causing the issue. I am an extreme example.
