It would be interesting to see how many open box returns are in the back room. Did you consider trying a replacement before returning? Returns/replacements aside, I'd say you seem a bit impatient. The thing has only been out a week...give Apple a chance to push an update.

I also returned mine. Just called apple for a RMA.

here is my situation:

1) lack of usage since I am around my Desktop most of the time and prefer 24" screen

2) reloading pages when swap pages in safari. What is the point of multi-page?

3) OS does not support file/doc sharing between apps and pc and need special app.

other than those, I really like ipad. I will get one later when I am more mobile.

The iPad is not for everybody. Just because they can't keep them in stock when less than a million have been made does not mean somebody is an idiot for taking it back.

I have never had wifi issues, but I have read that the wifi issues are apple's problem. Mine works fine mainly because I have an airport extreme. The forums are full of iPad owners with other brand routers who are having wifi issues.

The iWork software for the iPad has some shortcomings that render it a razor's thickness above useless. The entire file handling export USB email fiasco is a huge blunder that I speculate is an artificial hoop placed in our path lest we buy an iPad instead of a MacBook. In class this evening, i whipped out my iPad to a chorus of oohs and aahs. I wanted to take notes in pages. I ended up having to use memos because i could not figure out how to close the active document to save my life. All the online help said to click on My Documents on the menu bar. What menu bar? I went to numbers and there was the menu bar. I clicked the menu bar and it went away. I clicked again and it came back. I went back to pages and no menu bar. No amount of clicking and or swearing would produce the stinkin' menu bar. I had to give up and gi use memos to take notes but I was already far behind the lecture.

Three hours later, I scoured help.apple.com and found out I had to rotate the device to portrait mode to see the menu bar. Wait a second?f Didn't Jobs say there was no wrong way to hold an iPad? I guess there is a wrong way to hold it if you are trying to do real work! Will i take mine back over these issues? I think not. I really long for this form factor to work for me as a note taking machine. But I won't scream at somebody else for taking theirs back.

The iPad is a wonderful and potentially magical device made by human beings who make mistakes. If you don't like it, by all means take it back. As more of them fill the pipeline, i bet they will be very easy to get. But I also expect apple to wake up and fix at least the wifi issues and hopefully the filesystem fiasco. And the longer apple takes to fix issues, the easier it will be to get your hands on an iPad.

I really don't understand the animosity in this thread. Liking your purchase doesn't make it inappropriate for others to differ. Nobody is saying folk's opinions are wrong. I just differ in my opinion on a gadget. Relax folks, casual discourse. (Not directing this at the inane registration rules post, but some of the other posts.)

I've spent a lot of time reading the Apple support forums and repeated assertions that trade-ins did nothing to solve the problem. It seems inpatient, but I wanted to get it done before the 14 day period was up. The minute it's all fixed, I'll probably repurchase it.

Are you really a monkey?
Yep, a capuchin. Maybe that's why I can't figure out that crazy router thing.

I def agree that it can be annoying. Luckily an awesome web browser called atomic web came out which has tabbed browsing. Def recommend it. Much better than how Apple implemented it IMO. (http://gizmodo.com/5517078/atomic-web-brings-one-killer-function-to-ipadiphone-browsing)

You're right about file/doc support but there are some awesome apps for that as well. ReaddleDocs and GoodReader.

Maybe whenever you decide to get one again, this will be helpful.

Farewell my friend. Were it not for the following, I likely would have kept you:

1) Week WiFi compared to every other device I own
2) WiFi dropping out and asking to re-input security credentials.
3) Safari forcing a refresh of websites when there should be no need. Load up your favorite gadget blog, open three articles from the main page on separate pages, and voila, all the pages start refreshing whenever you look at them. Why???!!!!! I’ll be really curious to see if this is a hardware limitation of the low memory or is fixable with software.
4) Youtube not working sometimes. Just odd….
5) Not a single game changing or innovative app. I know it’s only 1.5 weeks in and there’s a whole lot more to come, but no interactive magazines? No NYTimes full issue subscriptions? Where’s the magic?

If they can fix 1-3 with either a software or hardware update, I’ll buy another one. Number 5 is sure to be resolved sometime soon. As it stands now though, with the above problems and the little buddy occupying an odd and non-essential space between iPhone and laptop, it’s just not worth having around.

The complete ease with which the manager waived the restocking fee makes me think I’m not alone.

tl;dr

No one cares.

waste of post. and waste of space. many other ppl love ur ipads.

I'm taking the kill em with kindness approach to these posts, but you folks sure would make it easy for someone who did vibe on trolling.

I mean seriously? I can't post politely about my dissatisfaction on a product in an independent forum devoted to discussing that product? Wow.........

Funny thing is, I don't own an iPad. I'm not defending it ... but I will call funny when I see it and starting a thread about returning your iPad is funny. Just use twitter. 140 characters can never be wrong.

And as a member who registered on 8/21/2008, posted 17 times, and hadn't logged in again after 6/17/2009, I'd hardly call you established or a "long time member". It's not an issue, just that you have two accounts and you mentioned you were a long time member so I figured I'd point that out to you.

#5 is the main reason i'm waiting. The Marvel app is actually the most intreaging for me but the lack of new content is disappointing. If I could buy new release comics each week I would be all over it. Games seem more convenient on my iphone and ABC/Netflix streaming can be done from my MBP. This device has a lot of potential but still 6 to 8 months off. I think I will be ready to buy one come Christmas.

I agree with you here.
I just think some of these iPad users have sexual relations with their iPads, so telling them that you are returning it, is like telling them that their girlfriends/boyfriends are overweight and ugly.

Some others probably just missed their daily dose of meds.

I think you handled the harsh criticism pretty well.

For someone who recommends he not waste time starting a thread and instead tweet; you come to the rescue (as you usually do) and do some apparently long investigative work to put him down.

I notice that with about 90% of your trolling here over time.

Such an unwelcoming crowd.

Well, a lot of first post users are trolling.

I can agree that 1-4 could be possible wifi problems.

However, for 3, there is a $0.99 browser that is said to work very well, but I suspect Apple will fix Safari with upcoming update.

5. Totally disagree. There are plenty of innovative apps.

unfortunately this forum has become less friendly and more agressive over time. but there are still a lot of nice and knowledgeable people around. just ignore the other 80%.

regarding you wifi problems and safari issues you're not alone. a developer friend told me the same story. i hope the 3G version will be better (although i don't know how but i hope).

Shhhh! I'm the only one experiencing any of these problems! It's just me making stuff up. ;)

It's definitely premature to pass judgement. Without question you're right. That being said, the window of return is up on either Friday or Saturday (not sure how they calculate the 14 days) and I wanted to get a full refund in case others started returning them in large amounts. The minute they fix it, I'll get a new one. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for them to be in stock.

I am experiencing wifi issues
I know apple will fix with software update
I will wait patiently while apple fixes. I am still immensely enjoying it
It's been 2 weeks. Give the developers some time.

There might be hope for that on the WiFi front. The pictures of the 3G model that have come out, like the one of Wozniak holding it, have the top portion of the iPad back being made of plastic rather than metal. If they're doing that for the 3G antenna, it might make a difference for WiFi as well.

Since they're likely not adding RAM, hopefully a software update will fix the Safari issues.
