Damn, this whole situation has me seeing red almost. I took the 8+ to ATT to return it. I explained to him that it had debris behind the rear camera lens and mentioning the crackling noise. He suggested putting it back in the box that it was shipped to me in, and slap the return label on it and drop it off at USPS. So that way I could avoid the $45 restock fee. I chatted with ATT today just to see if they received it yet. The guy I talked to said that since the box was opened (I did use the phone for a few days) that I still had to pay the restocking fee. WTF! Had I of known that, I would have just insisted at the ATT store to return it right then and there. If I had done it that way, I imagine I could have ordered another one sooner..
[doublepost=1506798099][/doublepost]The guy from ATT also suggested going directly through Apple for 'warranty issues' like that. Well that's true, but I did get the phone through ATT? I just assumed I would deal with ATT directly and let them figure out how to get me a replacement..

Learn something new every day. Old timers already knew this. Good luck

Hi All,
I also have iPhone 8 on iOS 11.0.1. I also hear the crackling noise, however, since upgrading to 11.0.1 I noticed something else. Few seconds after unlocking the phone (from screen being turned off) the screen pulses once. It gets a little darker then slowly comes back to what it was. It can be mostly visible on dark colors (background) and while phone is under bright light. I replaced the phone thinking I got a faulty model, however, the new one behaves the same way. I was unable to check this on 11.0.0 as phone downloaded 11.0.1 right before restoring setting from the iCloud. Could you please confirm yours behave the same way (or not).

My phone behaves the same way...

Thanks a lot, that gives me reassurance it's another software bug rather than an ambient light sensor problem...

Mines does NOT do this, just tested it a few times. You may have a defective sensor.

All iphone 8 and 8+ behave that way with auto-brightness on, go to an store and check it out.

I did, none of the ones I played with behaved that way. I suspect they all had iOS 11.0.0, but I did not verify that.
Are you saying this exists in 11.0.0 as well?

Yes. 11.0 as well.
You have to turn on auto brightness and set the brightness level less than half way. In the store they have auto brightness disabled and brightness set to ful.

OK, auto brightness on and I do not have this problem with my 8+. No issues, so your statement that all 8 and 8+ have it is in error.

Kind of off-topc but FWIW, with auto-brightness on & full & half brightness my screen dims about 25-30 seconds after unlocking it I don’t touch it.

Same/different issue?

Can you please check in a bright light condition like under a table lamp?

Is this the behavior on 11.1 beta? Mine does it roughly 4-5 second after unlocking, and it does come back to the same brightness. It resembles a slight pulse visible on dark colors.

I am on PB 11.1

I am on 11.1 PB as well. Yesterday, I couldn’t use the Messages app. It crashed immediately after opening. Tried hard resets, and eventually had to restore from iTunes backup to fix the issue. Have you run into this?

do all those who have upgraded to IOS 11.1 PB no longer encounter the issue of the crackling noise?

AT&T the Wrong choice

How is it AT&T’s fault when it’s Apples warranry policy they enforce on AT&T (and every where else you buy the phone) that isn’t their choice?

AT&T isn’t perfect but this seems ridiculous to blame them for something that isn’t their fault.

I upgraded to 11.1, no crackling noise on any calls. And I make a lot of calls. I have run into other unrelated bugs though.

Thank you budy. What kind of bugs do you run into ? I’m thinking of upgrading my iPhone 8 Plus to 11.1, can’t put up with this very annoying noise

I have a fairly dark background wallpaper and now I have tested it out with a lamp and still I do not see the slight pulsating or increasing brightness.

Sometimes switching from portrait to landscape it gets confused. Yesterday I couldn’t launch the Messages app and had to restore. Issue went away after restore, not sure what caused it. Nothing major. But I did download the 11.0.1 IPSW file to my computer in case I need to go back.

I prefer stay on iOS 11.0.1 and wait the official release in this case. Thank you indeed for your reply
