I’m about to buy a used MSI R9 280X. I’ve read a lot on the internet that some of these cards have graphic artifacts.

Can someone say how well the cards works, that the thread starter uses, when it is flashed with the Mac EFI?
MSI RADEON R9 280X GAMING 3G (TWIN FROZR IV, OC EDITION)
part number 912-V277-067 (on box)
EAN 4 719072 314026 (sticker on card)
UPC-A 8 24142 01599 5 (sticker on card)

Another question: when booting in Bootcamp, I have to switch the bios switch, haven’t I?

Don't know what's wrong, I can't read the link.

But if you mean this card

Then it looks good to me.

If the artifacts you mentioned means the flickering in 2D environment. Then the updated BIOS (351 or later) should fixed that already. Otherwise, I created a post years ago about how to manually fix the VRAM clock speed to avoid that flickering.

Other than that, this card looks good to me, reference ports layout (not necessary means 100% reference design) and dual ROM design makes it much safer for flashing.

Thanks, do you know where you posted the fix for the flickering issue?

And must I switch the Bios switch with this card when booting in Bootcamp? Or does the Mac EFI work for Windows and Mac?

For Legacy Widows, AND with Crossfire (any single GPU environment), NO. You can leave the switch at the Mac EFI position.

For EFI Windows, OR with crossfire activated, YES. You MUST flip the switch to non Mac EFI BIOS to boot Windows. Or you may simply leave the switch at the non Mac EFI position and only flip it when you need boot screen. This should be much much easier.

P.S. the Mac EFI of 280X is NOT compatible with Display Port 1.2 standard, which basically means all 4K 60Hz monitor. If you want boot screen on those monitor, you MUST set the MONITOR's setting to DP 1.1. Once booted, you can set it back to DP 1.2. Again, leave the GPU ROM switch at non Mac EFI position is much easier for day to day use.

That means, you should not flash a ROM that not belongs to this card.

Even though it's just a very rough check, and not necessary means it will damage anything. But for R9 280X, you should really make your own Mac EFI ROM, no point to randomly flash a downloaded ROM.

No difference, you can apply on either one, it's up to you.

But if the two ROMs on your card is legacy + UEFI, then I personally prefer to flash the legacy ROM.

Plenty of way. e.g....

Read the card's manual

Google it

Read the BIOS info on GPU-Z

Dump both out and have a look

......
hello h9826790, thanks for the help, sorry if my questions are basic but I do not know at this level and I do not want to be silly

Hey Folks,
So I just bought a Gigabyte R9 280X Rev2 and a 6 mini pcie - 8 pin cable from Amazon.

When hooking everything up, the fans don't spend and the screen doesn't come on in Windows or Mac OS (Can remote in though).

I have a feeling its the 6 to 8 pin adapter that I am using. I have attached the diagram below. The red lines represents where the cable gets the 2 extra sources from. IS this the correct way? if not could someone tell me what the correct way is so I could mod this cable to make it work?

Sorry for my english and hope I make since.

I've been searching for a diagram for hours now. Does anyone have a known working cable they can look at and tell me the wiring diagram?

Pin 4 should be ground pin. Are you sure your cable connected that to the 12V pin?

Anyway, the info in you want is on Wiki

hello MIKX, thanks for your answer i also install windows 7 on bootcamp, so you have use position 2 for flashing?

I have not used Bootcamp to boot Windows for at least 6 years. I install Win 7 & Win 8,1 on their own spare spinner HDD's and YES I flashed my 5770's 5870's & recently a Sapphire Dual-X HD 7970 using ATI Win flash with BIOS Switch position 2 set.

Method :

1. Have at least one EFI flashed GPU installed

2. At least one working Mavericks ! High Sierra 10.13.6 HDD or SSD installed.

2.1 Have your Win 7 / Win 8.1 dedicated spinner HDD installed

3. Have at least Win 7 ( = easy ) or Win 8,1 installation CD installed in your DVD drive.

4. Boot holding down the Option key .. .

4.1 Select WIn 7 ( whatever ) . .i it will look like nothings happening - a black screen with a blinking cursor .. wait . .patience. . . it WILL boot !

5. Follow the install instructions . . sometimes formatting can be a problem. . Google " How to fo foramt a Mac HHD for Windows.

6. Enjoy a native Win 7 / Win 8,1 experience.

Step 1, 2, 4, 4.1 are not necessary, and can be replaced by “hold C key during boot”

I have a 2006 Mac Pro running Yosemite (thanks Pike!) and now on to "fit and finish" nits to make it work.

I got an MSI R9 280X Gaming 3GB video card, and it worked great out-of-the-box, but I wanted to get boot screens and get it recognized in the PCI section of System Information. I chose this card because it's not too expensive, and clearly others have had good compatibility experiences in Mac Pros with Mavericks and Yosemite.

So, I read the AMD EFI firmware thread on netkas for a general understanding, grabbed Rominator's 7970 EBC firmware, and used them to make my own MSI EBC Mac ROM.

Works. Dive in. The water's fine. Boot screens and all.

Next step: figuring out how to change the "AMD Radeon HD 7970" text string in System Information.

hello, i know it's very old topic, but how did you grabed the efi from mac version 7970 please? thank you so much
