Never mind, I added the card to raytracer_supported_cards.txt in the AE app package and now it is recognized. I did not have to do this previously with 10.8.2 and the downloaded Nvidia driver.

Keep that info handy. You may have to do that each time you update OS and/or drivers. Just a small "headache" for a larger benefit, if you ask me.

Overall are you happy with the GTX 680 for AE work?

CUDA seems to be broken in AE after the 10.8.3 update. After Effects does not recognize the card for CUDA acceleration.

Any time you upgrade the drivers, you will need to reapply the card info in the Adobe files previously cited.

The same applies to patching the file

/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenCL.framework/Versions/A/OpenCL

if you have more than 2gb video memory on your GTX 660 card. See netkas' procedure documented here:

GTX 660 vs GTX 670 and FCP X

Hello,

would I notice any real difference between a GTX 660 (2GB) and a GTX 670 (2GB) in a MacPro 3,1 (2.8 Octa-Core) using Final Cut Pro X?

The 660 is half price from the 670 and I would like to know if it would really change my editing life spending that much more money???

I would have to throw out my GT8800 to have enough power. Would it make any sens to put a GT120 back in as my primary GPU?

What about a 660Ti? It's somewhat more powerful than a 660 and for less than 670. Im running one in my 09 MP and it's almost as fast as the 680mx in the imacs.

From my exerience the 660ti tends to yield better benchmarks than the 680mx, moreso in windows as the OS X drivers for the 660ti do not seem to be as mature.

I will post some benchmarks later.

Okay so I bit the bullet yesterday and bought a GTX680 (MSI Twin Frozr) - its onlt a 2GB one as here in the UK thhe4GB ones are extremley rare and very expensive plus I am going to only be using one screen for gaming and then for video editing when in mac osx.

My question BEFORE I install the card is are there any updated Nvidia drivers I should install first before I install the card - I am running a 5,1 Mac Pro on mountain lion 10.8.3. I see from the first thread that there is a driver for 10.8.2 but is there anything newer for .3 or do I need to install any nvidia driver at all over the OS one?

Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a dumb question!

@MidKnight44, do NOT load the NVIDEA drivers. You are using 10.8.3, with build-in reference drivers.

We are still awaiting NVIDEA to provide some updated drivers with PCI 2.0.

You do need to load the latest CUDA driver, I think it is ver. 5.0.45. Also, to get CUDA working for you in CS application, you need to find the patch and follow the directions...

In Windows of course you just get the latest NVIDEA Experience package...

GREAT NV(IDEA) Bob! "-D

I really wish though that NVIDIA would come out with an updated driver... solving the PCIe ver. 1/2.0 issue in OSX. Who needs to solve the problem in Bootcamp?

Be patient. NVIDIA has always released a web driver fairly soon after the OS was released, and 10.8.3 only just came out.

I just installed a EVGA 660ti into my 3,1 (10.8.3) but I seem to be having Wake from Sleep issues in OS X. Everything else works great, but the machine will not wake the display and I have to hard restart.

I assume I will have to wait for the new Nvidia drivers for a possible fix?

Gongrats with your new acquisition!!!!!

I also have some serious trouble waking from my sleep the last few days! ;-)

Just sit back, relax, kill the sleep modus of your MP for now and wait for new Nvidia drivers or OS X 10.9, while enjoying playing around with your new 660Ti!

Have a great TweakEnd! ;-))))

Must be the GTX660 only... I have the eVGA GTX680 and have no problems waking from sleep or the like.

Thanks, I'll have to do some more testing to see if longer sleep periods are different, but it is consistent with shorter periods. I still have the apple ati card if it becomes bothersome. I am enjoying the performance for bioshock though :D

I put a GTX 660 in my wife's MacPro3,1 and it has no problems waking from sleep. Not really sure what's going wrong there, she's had issues in the past but she had a GTX 285 at the time. Based on threads like this:

we turned off "wake on network access" and the problems went away.

Thanks for the link Asgorath. I tried running onyx's automation utility (repair permissions, clear cache's, etc.) and making sure that "wake on network access" was disabled but still no luck. Going to wait for Nvidia's drivers before going through the trouble of reinstalling OSX for a possible fix. Cheers.

The preference for 6 pin is over 8 pin (as the Mac Pro motherboard has 2x 6 pin connectors).

There are cards with 1x 6 pin and 1x 8 pin. As long as there are flavors of the same card with 2x 6 pin like the GTX 570, you can use the stock 2x 6 pin cables from the Mac Pro. The 6 pin cable fits into the 8 pin connector on the card, no adapter needed. The pins are coded, so it will fit only into one (correct) position.

Seems for those cards the one 8 pin connector is more a convenience than a request.

That said a card that really needs the 8 pin connector will likely fry the motherboard of your Mac Pro. So you have read the specs of the card and not only rely on the connectors on the card.

...and please remember that a lot of variations of graphics cards include overclocking and/or more/bigger cooling, requiring more power. EVGA for instance has at lease 6 variations of the GTX680 card, only two of these with power usage less than 225W (2x6-pin). The others, with 1x6-pin and 1x8-pin, or 2x8-pin, have the potential of adversely affecting you MoBo.
