A cautionary tale

I've been running a GTX 570 flawlessly for 18 months on my 12-core MP. Despite it working fine, I decided to install the Nvidia drivers from its website.

It unpacked fine, but when it tried to install itself the driver somehow corrupted the OS - the GPU wouldn't work and I've now had to get someone to wipe the entire SSD and reinstall OS X. Not sure what happened or why, but it did. Just thought I'd let you know…

Next step in my CUDA quest: GTX 680 Mac edition coming next week, Netstor GPU enclosure a few weeks after that, GTX 780Tis to follow as finance allow :)

PRAM reset is fix for trouble with Web Drivers

Maybe Nvidia should add a note in red about this, it always pains me to see people doing reinstalls.

A quick and painless PRAM reset sends the OS back to default driver.

Hold 4 keys and you are back where you started.

10.9.3 and the web driver have issues with most GTX680 4GB cards, GT640 cards and some GTX570s, I have sent info to Nvidia so if they have time, they can fix.

You have to keep in mind that they are likely writing drivers for 10.9.4 and 10.10 right now, probably hectic. And I imagine the GTX680 2GB and K5000 and GTX750M get the bulk of the attention.

ONCE AGAIN, IF WEB DRIVERS EVER CAUSE BOOT TROUBLE, SIMPLY DO A PRAM RESET AND YOU WILL BE BACK USING APPLE'S DRIVERS. NO NEED TO UNINSTALL OR DO AN OS RE-INSTALL.

I tried that. Repeatedly. The driver didn't install properly - no idea why - and corrupted the OS, which is why it needed a full reinstall.

Mac Pro 3.1 gtx 780

I have a macpro 3.1 which has been working great using a gtx 650 ti boost (egva) with dual monitors (both dvi) and either driver ( Mac or Nvidea) and running osx 10.8.

Recently I decided to pick up a gtx 780 (zotac) because prices have come down and this thread seemed to indicate the 780 played nice. Upgraded to 10.9.3; installed the card... Black screen. Installed nvidea drivers... Black screen. Tried the 650... Still works great.

780 seems to be working for others and the 650 works well. What am I doing wrong?

Upgrading my MP 4,1 GPU

Hello guys,

I want to upgrade my MP 4,1 GPU I do a lot of 3d with maya and cinema 4d, also use adobe for designs. I was thinking of getting the "EVGA GeForce GTX680 2GB GDDR5 DisplayPort DVI-I, DVI-D HDMI Graphics Card for Mac 02G-P4-3682-KR" from amazon but I want to know if this is the right option of is there a better card for that price. I know nvidia has the FX4000 and the k5000 but those are out of my budget right now.

Thanks in advance!!! :D

I had the maddening experience of having the video output switch DVI ports on my EVGA GTX680. It took me a couple of hours troubleshooting to realize the the port I've never used was now the active port.

Question, I just upgraded from OSX 10.9.2 to 10.9.3 so I could use XCode 6 Beta 2, but after the update, I noticed that the NVIDIA web driver is no longer compatible with my OS. Why is that? It probably won't make that much of a difference, but I'd prefer to use NVIDIA's driver when possible.

I'm running a Mac Pro 1,1 and a GTX 760. I don't think that matters, but I'm working with this because it's cheap and affordable.

Shogun.

Check for driver updates via the NVIDIA preference pane, there was a new driver for 10.9.3 released almost immediately after the update went out. There's even a link to it in the first post in this thread.

I recently purchased a EVGA GTX 560 TI to replace my ATI X1900XT in my Mac Pro 1,1. After installing the 560 TI and booting up I only get a black screen till i shut the pro back down. It will stay on the black screen no matter how long I wait. The 560 Ti was installed in the first slot. Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated.

Need more info. What OS version are you using? Do you have the NVIDIA drivers for that OS installed?

I'm using 10.7.5 and I installed the nvidia drivers from the OP. Am I missing any steps? The cards fan does spin up but doesn't have any output to my monitor.

Thanks

Try to hook up your monitor to a different output connector on the card.

Ive tried both of the DVI connections, I dont have a mini hdmi cable at the moment so that one I have no idea on. Would running mavericks or mountain lion possibly help at all?

is card powered? both cables?

not optional

turn on screen sharing while x1900 is in

verify it working by connecting up with another Mac

make sure that keyboard trick to turn volume up and down creates audible sound

turn off (or memorize) log in window, if you are using

now put 560Ti back in, wait for it to reach desktop

if no output, click on volume key, do you hear clicking?

If so, machine reached desktop

Now use remote access and log in

see what it says in system profiler about GPU

So I remote accessed in and from system profiler it is displaying a blank next to graphic and then it is showing no graphics/display under system report. What are my next steps?
Thank you for all the help

I already checked the preference panel and there no updates were listed, so I'm going to try the link to the latest drivers on the first post. Oddly enough, the drivers for OSX aren't listed on the main page anymore. I wonder why that is...

I have two six pin power cables plugged in and both are putting power through I tested each on the X1900. I have checked all the connections and tried all the ports. Is a way to add the 560ti to the supported cards list so it is recognized by the pro?

You're confusing Adobe support with other things. If you Are certain the 10.7.5 has 560 drivers? I don't recall when 560 got support. If it does, you may need to test in another machine.

Even without drivers, card should show up either in Geaphics section or PCI section.

In Asgorath's original post he said that the 560 ti was compatible with the Mac Pro 1,1 running 10.7.5. Is there a way to check to see if the card is actually dead without using another computer? If it's not compatible, would a gtx 460 be a compatible choice for a Mac Pro 1,1 running 10.9.3?

Thanks for all the help

560TI on 10.9.3 - Black Screen - Pls ignore

Asking a question inappropriate to this thread.
Apology. Should be discussing only Mac Pro here
