Problem is other than Nexus it's an issue most OEM on Android share so there really isn't too many places to go elsewhere if you want to stick with Android.

Heck even 5.1.1 rollout on Nexus devices was very incremental so even Google can't seem to do it all at once either.

In 2015 It seems to me to be a case of lesser of evils when it comes to which Android OEM handle updates best.

Incremental based on IMEI for people? So Apple is the best for updates period?

If the rumors from a ton of tech sites are correct, M is being release in Sept not Nov.

I highly doubt that, because for the last six years or so, a new version of Android comes out with the new Nexus phone in the Fall, and that has always been Nov / Dec timeframe, never earlier.

Unless the new Nexus phone has a release date of September this year, but I've heard nothing saying that.

Sept 23 is technically Fall.

Cupcake was released on April 27 2009
Froyo was released May 20 2010.
Honeycomb was released Feb 22 2011
Jelly Bean was released July 9 2012.
Those not mentioned were released late Sept or Oct.

Lollipop was the only Android release in Nov.
None were released on Dec

I really don't see any real pattern of Android releases.

I think there has been a pattern more recently. Of the last 4 major updates, 3 were within a 2 week window (Oct 31 - November 13) and coincided with a new Nexus phone.

4.2 - November 13, 2012. Nexus 4
4.4 - October 31, 2013. Nexus 5
5.0 - November 12, 2014. Nexus 6

Seems like a pretty clear pattern to me. ;)

Well rumors are the next Nexus releasing between September and October. So if the true pattern is whenever the Nexus releases, then you can't go by dates. ;)

And it's quite possible Nexus not being the first to release with M.

Basically, I haven't heard of any source expecting release as late as Nov.

I honestly haven't heard anything yet, just clarifying the previous post.

FWIW, I think releasing in Sept/Oct would be a huge mistake, as it would basically get lost underneath all of the typical iPhone-mania. The Nexus phones barely register a blip on the proverbial smartphone radar and trying to do so at the same time as the iPhone is the wrong move.

But then again, Google hasn't really shown they have a clue how to release/market Nexus devices so, it actually wouldn't surprise me.

Who knows really. Samsung could be working closely with Google for a release to coincide with the Note 5 release. It would also be against Samsung's historic timing to release a flagship smartphone without the latest/soon upcoming Android version. Will be interesting to see what comes from this.

I hope you're right. I hope the Note 5 comes with M.

How does the writing experience compare on the 5 compared to previous models like 2?
How does it compare to Surface?

Are there good apps like Onenote for organizing the notes or is the Samsung's crappy app still a leading choice?

LOL....the Note 5 isn't out yet...check back in Sept. You really should read and get context when entering a thread.

Truthfully, I won't care if it's released on L or M. Touchwiz will most likely be revamped once again to the point that it will satisfy me until an update. And if updates are as fast as the S6 updates, then there is not much to complain about. But I do have a strong feeling it will be released with M.

I doubt it's going to happen, sorry to say.

Yep. I can't see it happening either. I also don't think we will be seeing nexus devices in September either.

I think Oct/Nov for Nexus with M
I think Sept for Note 5 with 5.1.1 Lollipop or even 5.1
I too agree Jan/Feb 2016 for Note 5 & S6 to get M

The fact is the Note 5 will be going to manufacturer in around mid August. That gives Samsung 6 solid weeks to finish any software additions and enhancements they are providing over previous Note software such as new S-Pen features. They need to do all that with a solid base and usually that solid base is not as new an android version as we would desire.

I really don't see any real pattern of Android releases.

- Nexus-One release = January 5th 2010 ( First phone with Android 2.1 Eclair )
- Nexus-S release = December 16th 2010 ( First phone running Android 2.3 Gingerbread )
- Galaxy Nexus release = November 17th 2011 ( First phone running ICS 4.0 )
- Nexus 4 release = November 13th 2012 ( Shipped with an updated Jellybean 4.2 )
- Nexus 5 release = October 31st 2013 ( First phone to run Kit Kat 4.4 )
- Nexus 6 release = November 2014 ( First phone running Lollipop 5.0 )

See the pattern here ? All Nexus phones are released around the November time frame. And are usually the first phone to have the latest Android OS. I have never seen a new Android OS released before the new Nexus phone, those two releases are simultaneous; a new Nexus phone + new Android OS.

We will not see the Note 5 launched with Android M in September, no way. The Note 5 will 99% launch with Lollipop 5.1.1, and then come Oct / Nov the new next gen Nexus phone will come out running Android M.

Okay, now I'm confused. Public release date vs source code date?

The SDK for Android 4.0.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich), based on Linux kernel 3.0.1,[79] was publicly released on October 19, 2011.[80] Google's Gabe Cohen stated that Android 4.0 was "theoretically compatible" with any Android 2.3.x device in production at that time.[81] The source code for Android 4.0 became available on November 14, 2011.[82] Ice Cream Sandwich was the last version to officially support Adobe Systems' Flash player.[83] The update introduced numerous new features:[84][85][86]

BTW ... I do remember one of the Moto phones getting updated before the Nexus not to long ago.

Unfortunately it looks like Samsung is bringing the S6 features to the Note 5 (unibody, glass, no SD or removable battery). Not sure what my next phone will be now.

Yeah I have heard both rumors. One says s6 design but with a SD Card no removable battery. Another says S6 design and no SD Card and no removable battery. I hope they at least keep the SD card.

Two scenarios: Android M on the Note 5, change of Samsung's tune. Or Android 5.1.x and continuing lack of proper support.

I think unibody is a given. But it's possible they can put an micro sd slot externally like they did with the sim tray on the S6.

If rumors are true and the N5 will have a 4100 mAh battery then I am ok with not having a removable battery. But I think if HTC can include a SD Card in M9 then Samsung should too.
