But outside of circumstances where your hands may be covered or wet, I don't see how this is a more efficient solution than the fingerprint scanner, which has my phone unlocked before I can even swipe up to activate the iris scanner. It is nice to have a solution for those previously mentioned solutions or to add a second layer of security to the secure folder section.
Oh I agree...... FP scanner is still going to be faster. I didn't say it could or would replace it. Just that it is not another useless gimmick. Having grown up in the mountains of Colorado I can see how this could be useful in cold weather. Then as it evolves it could be very useful. Imagine if you only had to look at your phone to unlock it with no touching at all. That is where is see the iris scanner evolving in the future.

Samsung Gear VR 2016 review: a master class in refinement

The coolest part of this headset is the way it all comes together. None of the individual changes Samsung made are particularly impressive. They're nice to have, but are neither necessary nor a massive step forward in any significant way. Together, however, these changes take an already great VR experience and make it the most comfortable mobile VR experience by far. This new Gear VR is the golden standard by which everything else will be judged.

I'm actually shocked Samsung didn't include some sort of wake-up feature along with the IRIS scanner where if you bring the device up to your face, the accelerometer (or is it the gyroscope?) will wake the device from the motion and be ready to read your eyes.

Maybe it's being finessed and will either come with the Android N update or, hopefully, the S8/Edge release in early 2017. I hope so. It seems like a very obvious feature.

In general, I agree with you. And I like that Samsung themselves didn't overhype the IRIS scanner. They said so themselves that it's just another security option that is more secure than a fingerprint. Just like wireless charging where you don't lose the ability to charge with a cable, the new IRIS scanner doesn't lose the ability to unlock your device with the fingerprint or pin/pattern, etc. It's up to you. And if you should choose the IRIS scanner, at least it works reliably well. Hopefully with some auto-wake feature, it'll be even better in the future.

The Iris scanner is amazing for lock screen shortcuts.

Before the Note 7, I would slide a shortcut, then I would still have to rest my finger back on the home button or enter a password.

Not anymore. When I do a lock screen shortcut, the Iris scanner is so fast, that I don't even see it. It just goes to whatever the shortcut is. This makes using lock screen shortcuts useful again in a time when have lock security is damn near a must.

Setting up now. Will keep posting as I go.

Fingerprint sensor seems faster than the S7 edge, but not so fast to the point that you can't view the lock screen.
[doublepost=1471534249][/doublepost]The Iris sensor is crazy fast. Extremely quick setup, and works very quickly in room light and complete darkness. It's cloudy where I'm at now, so I can't test it in sunlight just yet. Half of the time, my eyes weren't even aligned(I mean way off), and it still unlocked. I think it might just need to caught one iris.

It's awesome that it works in complete darkness.

I've read/heard that the IRIS scanner gets better after each read, too. It learns. Can't remember if that was verified true or not.

I wonder if this is the HDR Video they was talking about?

I can't confirm for this phone, but this was definitely the case with the Lumia 950.
When I first got it, the iris scanner was hit and miss at best. After day one, it was lightning quick and worked every single time.

Sounds like this will be better though, as the Lumia was a bit finicky with where you held the phone from your face.

One handed use is still nice, I hate balancing my phone with one hand and getting my finger on the home button. This way I can just press the power button and it goes right into iris scanner. I know you're going to say you have to swipe, but with Good Lock you don't have to. I also have not had good luck with the Note 5 fp sensor, I often have to sit there for several seconds and place my finger repeatedly for it to register, it's not even close to the iPhone fp sensors.
[doublepost=1471540626][/doublepost]I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts, especially after seeing the scratch resistance has gone backwards. The day I put a case on a phone is the day I run my car off a cliff. I enjoy my Note 5 totally naked, and while I can be persuaded to put a skin on the back I've yet to find a glass protector for the front which will fit without a halo, and that will feel like the naked screen, especially the feel of the spen, and not look like a cover was slapped on.

I'd be happy if they updated the Note 5 with always on screen, I don't think there would be any technical hurdles since it's the same screen.

Oh hey, Anandtech calls out the Laggy POS that is Android/Samsung - http://www.anandtech.com/show/10559/the-samsung-galaxy-note7-s820-review/11

"e Galaxy Note7 performs well in benchmarks but the closer we get to real-world testing the more apparent it is that Samsung is not really doing well in real-world benchmarks which is concerning. Obviously if Samsung continues to see rising profits they’re going to completely overlook everything written here, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see people notice relative differences in performance more and more as people get used to devices like the HTC 10 and iPhone 6s which are smooth and fast in real-world usage."

I can't wait until iPhone or HTC makes a decent front AND rear camera phone so I can sell my S7 Edge. (Can't get rid of it, it's the best of front AND rear at the moment)

If you have an iPhone and are used to a smooth experience, here's your fair warning that you are in a laggy POS experience with the Galaxies. BUT, one that has considerably better tools (Like camera). Oh well, bring on the iPhone 7!

Some reviewers said the same about the S7 edge. But the S7 edge was the smoothest smartphone phone I've ever had.

Anandtech has lost all credibility 2 years ago :p

I wish I could say likewise. Most of the time it's pretty smooth, but there's still lag evident when scrolling or app switching. It's a waste of time to compare to iOS because that OS runs like butter. I don't think the difference between high end Android devices and iOS is *that* great, so most of the time it's a non-issue.

I'll be honest y'all, I wanted the S7 Edge more than any other phone out there, but after two weeks I can't deny the speed and responsiveness of iOS and the 6s/6s Plus. They are not quite there. Now that's my opinion and user experience. Not anyone else's. Gosh the Note 7 is so gorgeous. It's seriously making me crazy!

Samsung shouldn't have reused the 820, and 6gb ram should have been standard. I love my Note 5 but man does it lag from time to time, and now I have to deal with the same proc/ram in the new model? I think the iPhone 7 with the A10 is going to make the N7 look bad. Benchmarks shouldn't matter, but until touchwiz is completely lag free I think they do.

Funny I get lag on my 6s+ too sometimes when scrolling apps like Flipboard. But I don't with my OPO3 or S7 edge. Different people have different experiences.

You know, even though I complained about the display model a few days ago, I still keep looking at this thread and been keeping the device in my mind and still think about grabbing one. Maybe because it's time to just get over root and mods and just use the device as is. Just use one as my main line.

Any word on unlocked versions yet?

I get lag pretty much every day in something on my 6s Plus. Have since I got it. Lag when unlocking. Lag when opening an app. Lag when trying to pull up the keyboard. It isn't deal breaking, or the end of the world. But I don't see how I'm the only one who notices that on an iPhone. The way these forums read, it would appear that no iPhone has EVER lagged, but EVERY Android phone has and does.

I've also experienced lag with my iPhones.

Both iOS and Android lag to some degree, but they're both also very comparable in speed. It's really a non-issue anymore.

Yes. Mine was in AT&T packaging. It was shipped through FedEx.

I'm kind of bummed out by this.

Granted it's just a box... but it's part of the experience Samsung set out for consumers to experience. It's as if Apple decided to let AT&T package their iPhone in a AT&T box.. it would leave a bad taste.

Over at Android Central someone already complained and receive 60 credit toward their bill.

That's wierd, my S7 from AT&T came in a Samsung box.
