The recall was the top story on the BBC radio news today which must rate as terrible PR for Samsung considering how many must have heard that.
Even my mom who isn't very techy heard it on the radio and was saying how terrible it was. So yeah the fact this news is everywhere certainly will hurt Samsung.

This really couldn't of been worse timing considering the new iPhone is announced next week...

Of the 35 reported, only 24 were found to be faulty, it seems.

"As of Sept. 1, a total of 35 claims were registered with Samsung's service centers at home and abroad. Only 24 units on a scale of 1 million were affected by the battery problem."

Those who want will be able to "voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks,"

Who knows how many else are out there, but this does seem rather small. The only thing making this feel big is the unprecedented recall, which Samsung has to do mainly to get in front of this to be safe. Samsung isn't taking chances with customer safety, and that's the right call to make.

They got in front of it, and have a great chance to sort it out quickly and as painlessly as possible. If they carry through, they'll be fine, I think. Until then, though, every cancellation or return or stab that Apple or other OEMs take is all fair game.

Samsung is a big company; they can take it. Also, this means quality control for the S8 will be even tighter. That's very fine by me.

I think Apple is happy this is happening secretly ;-)

That is still 24 bombs sitting right by your junk daily. No way.

Lol same thing with my dad. He called me and sent me an email saying I should return my phone. Although I agree that Samsung is handling this very well it is still sending a TERRIBLE message to the average consumer who only hears "Samsung phones are being recalled because they explode". Will be very interesting to see how this all plays out

Gotta admit that I am actually a little nervous about this. My phone gets EXTEMEELY hot with somewhat normal use and when charging. My wife's phone does not have this issue. Definitely not keeping this thing in my pocket even tho I have two kids already I'd like the option to have a third if I want

Again the issue is not about actual devices faulty, but the potential amount that could be faulty and the liability that creates. There is a big difference but clearly Samsung feel there is enough evidence to warrant significant potential which is why the recall is happening. This is unprecedented in regards to smartphones.

When I had my s7 edge it ALWAYS was hot anytime I used fast charging. Normal charging or wireless it was fine. So looking back that should of bothered me but it didn't but now? If I still had it and it was that hot I would be rather concerned.

I wouldn't be as concerned if it was only happening when it charged but it's getting hot with seemingly normal use. While my wife's is not (although I use my ohine much much more than her )

Mine got hot when I was on it for like 15-20 mins straight and did feel warm in my pocket quite a few times

You think the Note gets hot I've got to go back to my Priv now which gets hot enough to scramble / poach / fry eggs with a bit of light Chrome use!

The Note has been positively arctic in comparison! :D

Bleh, looks like my lag is back. I'm not sure if it's coincidence, but it was after I applied a theme. It's on and off, but definitely noticeable. Coupled with the GPS issues and wifi hand off issues I think I'm going to have it swapped out, Costco allows one swap out no questions asked. If I didn't get the phone pretty much half price I would have probably returned it by now and went back to my Note 5.

I'm also still bummed I can't get a freakin screen protector for it. All the glass ones are junk, and I installed the skinomi one for my wife and it's complete garbage. It looks and feels like I stretched a dishwasher glove over the phone. Has anyone found a film screen protector which isn't soft and rubbery?!??!

I havent noticed any lag with the Note 5 I am using but I usual use lower end or older phones so maybe I just dont stress/notice the small stuff

Take this at face value, only reporting the phone call I just had with Samsung UK.

Basically he restated the fault and the 35 phones worldwide from the amount shipped. He did say though that preliminary investigations by Samsung found that UK stock is not affected, which is weird given the reports of recovery from UK and Eire carriers on here. As I bought mine direct from Samsung UK he said they would replace my device with a new one free of charge and to hold off for an official statement. Not sure how I feel now, I love it and intended to get the iPhone 7 anyway as well but I'm not happy getting most of my info from websites while sitting with a potentially dangerous device at home. Looks like it's going back then.

Damage control essentially ... Can't expect anything else really.

Despite being a Note owner since v1 when it was a true monster compared to other phones of the time, I think I'm all Samsunged out. The battery thing is either nothing or something and, whilst not being the sole reason, it does side in the 'negatives' column.

After jumping through hoops to import the Note 5 and associated warranty risks, and after trying the Note 7 in various stores over the past few weeks, it just doesn't grab me like it used to. The price has gone up whilst the value proposition has gone down. And, S-Pen notwithstanding, the alternatives are just more compelling.

Price matters but value matters more. I'm seeing little reason to pay £650+ for a device with very slow updates and, I'm sorry to say, inconsistent janky performance. Maybe I'm spoiled by switching between Nexus, LG, and Xiaomi devices but after years of promised TouchWiz optimisations haven't done enough.

Maybe I just don't need a flagship any more. Why is an 'ancient' Nexus 5 with 2gb and SD801 so nice to use by comparison? Likewise a Mi Max with 4GB and SD652 and, a supposedly heavy MIUI skin, is so buttery smooth.

Don't get me wrong the hardware is great if you need it all. They've pretty much nailed that side of things. And I'm certain tons of you absolutely love the device. I'm just tired of the software situation from a mature and refined standpoint and that Android updates need anywhere from 6-12 months to arrive on a flagship.

Hopefully the recall doesn't hit the share price and profits too much as they could direct that at the software teams to really go to work on it.

Now just to add even more confusion, got this from Vodafone...
Doesn't help the number is wrong and I've found that it's actually 0330 not 0333... But whatever.

On hold to them now to see what they're saying.

Well said anf valid points. If I didn't get a "buy one get one free" deal with AT&T along with $400 in target gift cards I don't think I would have bought the Note. For basically the same reasons you said. The previous Android phone I tried was the Nexus 6p which was an amazing phone for the $400 it was at the time. I don't see much difference in everyday usage between the Note and the Nexus and thebNexus was buttery smooth while the Note definitely has performance issues imo. My effective price on two Nite 7s is about $800 so for that price I'd take the Note over the Nexus but wouldn't pay much more.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, keep in mind that these tech companies all use the same suppliers for some parts, and some of these parts are manufactured in the same factories. So I am sure they are scrambling around right now making sure the batteries they used have no relation with the batteries giving Samsung a headache.

That is a great point! They all do use the same companies to produce the internal parts. I imagine every phone maker is having the same investigation to see if they have the defective batteries in their phones.

Once they've put the recall wheels in motion they should come out the otherwise with their reputation in tact. Sure, they'll lose sales, but it'll be a wake up call to the industry and only result in better and safer devices in the future.

It will be interesting if they name the company that made the defective batteries. It would basically put them out of business.
