I get the J5 to keep, it's not a loaner.
I could have used a loaner A7 but I've got an old S5 to use so the free phone is cool, I can gift it to someone.

I might even get another 128GB SD card if I'm lucky :)

I'll be happy to see my nice new Note 7 again in a week or five.

Where do you get a grand from? I've seen so many people mention bogo deals and whatnot. I myself got a -$200 CAD discount for trading in a dumb phone at the samsung store. Total cost for me was $850 CAD ($650 USD).
Price off contract without special deals is $850 ÷ factor in tax and it's close to a grand.

Over here €899 is $1002 ;)

What is strange to me....if Samsung knows where the faulty batteries some from... Then they should easily be able to match up serial number of impacted batches. Why not just recall those? Like any other recall? Why don't they make it easier for the customer so those not at risk don't have to go through a return?
I suspect whilst the issue may be isolated to batteries by one supplier, the issue is random and therefore could affect those batteries regardless of which batch they came from. It's that 'potential' which has shook Samsung and likewise the potential dire implications if someone was hurt (and the financial liability resulting from that) which has meant total recall.

I decided to keep my Note 7. I will wait a couple weeks when TMO gets new stock in and use my JoD to get a blue one though. The way I look at it is there have been 35 reported cases out of what 20 million phones? I think I stand a better chance of winning the lottery than my phone exploding. But just for peace of mind I will exchange it when TMO gets new stock.

I think there has been a lot of the "sky is falling" reactions from everyone. Samsung has been upfront and has put the public safety first in all of its actions so far. Even at the expense of extremely bad PR for their flagship phablet.
Gotta give them kudos for the way they have handled this whole thing. They have erred on the side of caution.
Most companies would not have been so upfront and quick to pull their product from the shelves.

My Note 7 has been great! No issues at all. Fast responsive good battery life and great camera.
We are going up to the mountains to some hiking and exploring this long holiday weekend. The terrain will be a mixture of lakes and streams mountain hillsides. My Note 7 will fit in very nicely.

2.5 not 20 ;)

That is 2.5 million shipped not sold as it includes the ones in Europe at carriers and such that were waiting for launch day that never happened ...

Still the odds are low enough, Just use caution and don't leave it on charge overnight or unattended.

Yup. They're playing it safe, which I think is the right call.

At the end of the day, the vast majority of note 7 owners very likely never had a faulty device to begin with.

Exactly.......

How many times have we seen a company react this quickly at an enormous PR and $$ cost to them?
None.....most dodge the issue blame the customer.

Oh ok........is that worldwide? It that what was in the channels too?
Either way the sky is not falling and Samsung is not doomed.

Yep, worldwide so includes the carrier stock in Europe that was waiting for launch day but never happened :(

The odds number wise are still in your favour regardless ...

I think luckily for Samsung there aren't many markets where their note 7 phones are with the general public. 3 countries had their stock delayed and the U.K. Unless you pre ordered from Samsung or CP Where you got it 3 days early all this was before the official launch.

Even some carriers in the uk where quoting delivery for the 15th of September if you didn't pre order. So I think most of the damage seems to be US based.

And as you have said. This is potential. And this is only the first couple weeks. And these are only reported cases. if anyone wants to risk it....sure the odds are you will be fine.

But this is not sky is falling honestly. Samsung is a business after all and they wouldn't do this if the situation wasn't pretty dire. This sets them back too much to take this decision lightly.

When you preorder like we all do, whether you like it or not, you are sometimes the guinea pig.

I got a case for my N7 that I really love. I got my free 256 GB SD card too! Now I can't decide if I want to keep it or sell it.

Can you name a time others corporations have blamed the customer for even the percentages we are seeing (to quote Samsung less than .1%)? For batteries specifically. And of course when it wasn't a case of the battery being tampered with. Because am thinking this is potentially more widespread than we have ever seen. Just wondering where others have dogded an issue to this scale.

Samsung is doing the right thing here. But I don't think they had any other choice. And they just made a move before they were forced to (which official govt invsatigations will still happen in the US at least).

Batteries and airbags. Two things you do not mess up or you are in recall zone.

And even after the recall program, there could still be cases of exploding note 7's just because batteries can explode.
Yep...just google exploding <insert phone name here> and you will get a ton of results and images of people getting burned and hurt from exploding phones. But to some here on MR this is a chance to throw dirt on Samsung because they have an agenda. Samsung is doomed! :)

At the same time others agendas are showing bright and clear too. This is not the same as random defective batteries found in every other product. To not get that even after a recall shows a bias as well.

Actually, it could just be a specific batch. But Samsung is taking no chances. I'm not going to assume anything for better or worst until details from the investagation are stated.

The vast majority can actually do some math. Samsung isn't selling a lot of high end phones, but dozens and dozens of cases like this on the firs few weeks, before another expansion means that we could easily have hundreds and hundreds of issues like these, that are dangerous, in the next few years of Note7 usage.

Heck, it could be exponencial., or maybe all damaged batteries already exploded. But one has to have an agenda to not realize the danger. Why the hell would anyone think that the vast majority of batteries aren't affected, in some way? Maybe the issues would never trigger a reaction.

All we know is that the same supplier was responsible for all batteries. All we know is that in the first weeks, where Samsung only sold 2 million phones (US, UK, SK, etc.), dozens and dozens of dangerous situations already took place.

One has to be a massive apologist to say "kudos Samsung" for being forced to deal with this in the first place. At least, all of their control and quality testing department is insanely incompetent.

So, not only does the note7 lag and is the slowest of any current flagship, it can also make you warm in your trip. Enjoy it. Money well spent.

It actually couldn't be a specific batch logically as it affects devices with different SOC's and they would be produced in completely different batches.

The reality is - this is a major f'up but it is one that Samsung is dealing with in the best and most appropriate way. It doesn't make it any less of a f'up however and will be difficult from a marketing perspective to relaunch the device with the same kind of interest/expectation that was behind it.

It will hurt Samsung's bottom line this quarter. But hopefully lessons have been learned and this constant rush to outdo it's competitors by getting a device to market sooner rather than when it's ready will hopefully be the greater lesson learned here. I think everyone (including Samsung's finances) would agree that a later launch but one without issues would have been better than this.

Samsung will recover ... It is not the end of the world.

If it transpires that the Note 7 subsequently fails to garner momentum once relaunched after this and does not meet sales expectations, the greater casualty may be the Note brand itself, especially in Europe. But it's far too soon to tell this.

But the batteries are manufacturered separately. So it could be one or multiple bad battery batches that affect differ version phones. Who is to say, each batch is for only one version. I would think they record each battery serial pair with each phone.

I'm just guessing here though.

Oh jeez, what does a company have to do to make it right? C'mon now. Bad batteries plus a quick announcement and resolution is the best possible reaction a company could have had. That's all that matters. Recalls happen all the time with all kinds of products. For people who don't have a Note 7 that are using this as an opportunity to throw hate is pathetic. Easily still the best phone of the year for me. And from some of the reactions from YouTube reviewers and online sites they feel the same way and are keeping their personal purchase on the Note7 while waiting for their replacement. Absolutely loving this phone.

Who here is downplaying the issue with an agenda? I can't read every post of course but I'm not seeing many people saying this isn't a serious and unprecedented issue. Quite the contrary.

If they are, they should be corrected sure, but if anything, I'm just hearing anti Samsung by the usual suspects.

Possibly, all we can go on is the fact Samsung has taken the action of recalling all, globally (outside of the Chinese ones) and they must be privy to more information on the subject than anyone else. They have to have some valid concern it 'potentially' affected more than just isolated ones. It appears from their press they are essentially remanufacturing devices with new batteries hence the time frames of a couple of weeks before replacements are ready for those already sold and over a month before those delayed countries will see a relaunch, which has to be indicative of some greater fault. But again all hypothesis as only Samsung know the true scale.

So far so good! Fell asleep last night playing with the settings (Got back at 1am and started to set it up). Today it's really awesome, been installing apps and again playing with settings.

So far i've been loving it as a refreshing change from iOS. The phone feels so good in hand as well.

Tried the Gear VR for a few minutes and really impressed, but can see what people say about it being obvious where pixels are and a 4k screen next year can help with that.

I do like the S View case a lot however I use my phone as a GPS a lot and with that case it's not going to fit in nicely!! So might rock it caseless for most of the time with the case when I go on trips etc.

Also fast charging is very impressive!!

Awesome! Report back and let us know your thoughts!
