I buy and sell stuff on the side and toy with them a bit. I wouldn't keep such a nice phone for my personal phone because I'm too rough on them.

So a replacement safe Note 7 caused a plane in the USA to be evacuated after it began smoking ...

The replacement device was a green battery black square replacement from AT&T

https://www.engadget.com/2016/10/05/replacement-samsung-galaxy-note-7-smoking-southwest-flight/

So this is about a fortnight after being replaced and it was about a fortnight before first issues began arising. I hope to god this does not follow a similar pattern ...

That really sucks. Any chance you could keep us updated on the results of the investigation. Would really suck to not know for sure. Because so far all the reports of replacement phones exploding have been bs. So it would be good to know for sure.

Really? Was there any need for that faff.

Read the report on Engadget or don't. But stop with the ansy'ness. If you don't like a post, don't read it. But don't snigger or snipe just because you don't want to read it.

The way you choose to reply to content you do not wish to read or are interested in only prolongs the discussion of that said content.

If you don't want to read the content of a post, or discuss something simply move on.

What? It seems like a very reasonable question and request. (The below quote is the one being commented on by MRU).

Don't worry, you'll be the first to know when Samsung contacts you to return your phone.

They've all been bs? Have the ones in China been debunked?

Bad news for him is if this turns out to be a legit replacement device that caught fire, he won't have the Note7 to discuss much longer as an available smartphone.

So the guy just happened to have a picture of the box on his brand new iPhone to send to TheVerge for the story?

What if someone else took the picture for him and sent? I can't imagine someone lying about this. What in the world would he have to gain? Sammy will be able to verify if the phone was on the recall list or not.

Whoa, I didn't mean any offense. In fact I was thinking how people in this thread get offended when someone else posts follow ups. So I just thought, you being the original poster, it would come off better if you listed the follow up. And I did read the article. This was the important part for me..

Update: A Samsung spokesperson sent the following statement to Engadget:

"Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7. We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share."

But hey, if you'd rather not then that's cool. But seriously, no offense intended.

I know. It's like a kick in the ribs every time a new one is reported as I know with every new report, the chances of actually getting the N7 here is depleted further and it becomes even more remote and even hard to get even from the usual importers too.

EGlobal have removed it completely and no sign of it returning yet either :(

Let's just hope it's a one off, but I fear it may not be ....

Whats scary about that report is that the phone was off, you would think at that point it would be safe. And supposedly those batteries have been verified with a quality check by not only Samsung, but also the US gov. Wonder if the culprit isnt the battery but something else, but if it was off not sure what that could be other than the battery. Really want to see what the investigation shows, really love this phone, but not at the risk of my family.

If it's proven to be a replacement device, what'll happen next is pretty obvious:
  • FAA immediately bans the phone from flights immediately, as in TSA staff will be instructed specifically to inspect smartphones that go through security. They will pull any Note7 on sight.
  • Samsung will have to pull the device for good. This incident kills the Note7 entirely. And as I've stated before, this puts the nail in the coffin on the Note brand.

I always thought Samsung went too fast with their investigation of the original Notes 7 and with the replacements. I don't think they spent enough time making sure everything was right.

If people are scared of these exploding batteries, they would buy a different brand. They aren't going to buy a S8 or any Samsung phone.

So you think those people that are worried about exploding batteries will buy a Samsung phone if it isn't named Galasxy Note? Lol.

I think you're right. This has certainly created an element of distrust for Samsung phones all round I think. The good thing is it'll push people to other Android makers that may have been in Samsung shadow until now. Plenty of choice out there.

It puts the brand name in the pits so Samsung will just call the next one something else like Galaxy Pro or something.

This is very, very disappointing from Samsung.

It was genuinely going to be my next phone but not anymore.

I think I'll pull the trigger on the next well-priced S7 Edge I see...

(Or a Pixel )

Man maybe I better keep my replacement Note, maybe it will be so rare to find one not blowing up that is becomes a collectors item. You might have better luck seeing the Loch Ness monster than a Note 7 if the recalls are recalled

It's entirely possible that this will hurt the entire Galaxy line. Samsung's releases come March may have an entirely different name. I doubt it though. My bet is just the Note line will be killed.

Well this news is bad. I saw the interview with the guy whose phone burned on the flight. You can't judge these things on appearances but he seems like a pretty normal guy, showing no attention seeking melodrama or shady behavior apparent in recounting his story. Plus everything is going to be investigated with a fine tooth comb by the Feds and he knows it and still looks pretty confident in his account of the phone being a replacement.

I'm glad he was not hurt. The phone was in his pocket and he could have been badly burned grabbing it out of his pocket.

Sigh. I don't know what to make of this. I did stop fast charging my replacement Note 7 after three charges on fast recharging because the phone and the charger would get hot and my original Note7 and charger as well has my husband's original ANd replacement Note 7's and chargers do NOT get hot while fast charging.

My Galaxy S7 loaner randomly would overheat.

I would think with consistent quality would come consistent behavior under fairly consistent conditions. I am not seeing this consistency.

My replacement Note 7 and charger behave normally on normal charging and overall I enjoy my Note 7 very much and my husband loves his, his friend also loves his Note 7 and yet another friend wanted to get one. This is a very sad development for us.

If there is another recall I am not sure what I will do. I guess stick my Note 7 sim into my 6S Plus.

Had the poster meant what he had posted then yes it would be very reasonable, but given we have had weeks of the poster bemoaning anyone posting anything to do with the recall, with tantrums and tiarra's being thrown, the lambasting of anyone posting any story which could have a negative implication, I took the post based on those weeks - as just another sarcastic dig once more ...

I will post a follow up to the story, however I am only privilege to the same news content feeds as anyone else, whatever the outcome IF the exact cause is reported by Samsung, (which won't happen, but could by the CSPC) I'll update ..

I'm sure the CSPC will also be investigating this too, after all they had to give the go-ahead for the resale / replacement handsets.

As I said previously I can't imagine he's making it up. There would seem to be literally no gain unless he's legitimately mentally ill. As you stated, they're going to inspect the device thoroughly.

However the more I think about this, the conclusion I've come to is there is no best case scenario for Samsung here. Whether it's a recalled Note, an original, or another Galaxy device entirely, all people are going to extract from this is yet another Samsung phone "exploded." I might be wrong on my original prediction that the Note line would die, it might be that this kills Sammy in the market altogether.
