Very good point in there about the Olympics advertising. This event is 3 days before open ceremonies. One of the biggest advertising driven telecasts in sports. Saying available now is much better than xx.xx date. Could be the whole reason for accelerating and the smaller differentiation from the S7. Its all about the sales of course. And a majority of buyers will see the commercials and just want the latest.

Prepare to see lots of commercials, galaxy notes in the hands of reporters...... ugh. And I thought the S7 commercials were beyond annoying with repetition.
I get the feeling launch day won't be the same every year just due to the olympics It makes sense. Hopefully it's an on going thing but think it might not be.

Yes they armed to the teeth with profit for their marketing budget. Just please no more lil wayne.... **curls up in a ball**

Still better than that weird one that HTC did with Robert Downey JR. and those weird car washing, dancing trolls.

That's a real shudder!

I am obviously not in Samsung's target demo with Lil Wayne, but I'd for sure prefer the weird Gary Oldman and RDJ commercials any day.

The Lil Wayne one is definitely my least favorite. It's stupid, but the HTC car washing troll one just makes you feel equal parts confused and uncomfortable.

I think Samsung's generic "world is full of water" commercial advertises the waterproofing much better than Lil Wayne does:

However, this is the one I see the most:

Simple and to the point.

Yeah those are cool. I know they are targeting youth, but I mean lil wayne has been arrested so many times. He has almost died from drinking cough syrup. I am pretty sure he is like 4 years out from his last album. Such a strange choice to have for a product endorsement. But perhaps that was the joke and I missed it.

It feels like they just got RDJ and Gary Oldman for their names and faces. At least with Lil Wayne, he successfully represents that "reckless" lifestyle where one might decide to pour champagne over their smartphone. Yeah, it's still stupid.

Given Samsung's marketing budget, at least they have other more straightforward commercials. HTC doesn't have the same resources, so to blow it all on weird commercials with RDJ and Gary Oldman sucks even more for them.

LG wins them all

And please don't ever forget someone at Samsung greenlit this.... probably the worst piece of marketing I have ever seen in my entire life:

That dude with the watch is pretty much how I picture every Samsung user

The Lil Wayne one is dumb......him and gold teeth...yikes! HTC just never seems to get there advertising done right. They just miss it somehow......their stuff comes across as dis jointed. I think after the M8 advertising fiasco they changed agencies.

And now the iris scanner functionality.

The iris scanner screen looks ugly. Why couldn't they have it like Windows hello with the animation? Does anyone know if it still has the fingerprint scanner? Some have rumoured that they replaced it with the iris scanner.
Will be upgrading from an iPhone 6+ to the note 7. Shame there's no white colour though :(

It still has the fingerprint scanner and I would hazard a safe guess 99% of Note 7 users will end up using that due to it's speed of unlocking and accuracy over the Iris scanner.

The Iris Scanner is the new Samsung heart rate reader. Fun for 3 minutes ...

Who knows, it might be good?

But seeing the screen shared with a pattern unlock doesn't fill me confidence....

I can see where the iris scanner might be useful. I wonder if they'll allow both iris scanner and fingerprint. That way, if your hands are busy or dirty, you can use your eyes.

And if it's fast enough in general use, like if you can bring the device up to use and it unlocks quick enough that it's ready to go once you bring it up, that could be impressive too.

But that's up to Samsung. Could be cool tech. Reminds me of face unlock from stock Android. That never really took off.

We'll see. In theory, I agree finger print would just be faster. Maybe iris provides more security? Can eyes be faked?

The problem with that logic is this ... As soon as it's unlocked - you are still going HAVE to utilise your fingers regardless if you want to do anything with the phone. If they are that busy or dirty you likely wouldn't be unlocking anyway.

In the time it takes to raise the phone to your face, you could have already unlocked ....

The iris scanner looks roughly as bad as the face recognition option I've seen in Android ROMs. Basically by the time you position yourself correctly you could've inputted a pattern or code just as well.

The best part about fingerprint reading is that it's very fast and only requires you to place a finger correctly. The bad part is that Samsung (and Apple among many others) keep getting the placement of the fingerprint scanner totally wrong. On any phone bigger than 5" it's awkward to reach that bottom front portion of the phone when using it with one hand so having the fingerprint scanner in the back ala Nexus phones or on the side like Xperia is the way to go.

Then again I'm not happy about Samsung peddling the curved display either. It is not in any way better than a straight display of the same size. I really hope they come up with the real deal, foldable displays next year as has been rumored as that could be a real game-changer for smartphones. I would love something that is roughly a 5" phone normally but can be opened into a small tablet when needed.

I wonder if you'll be able to trick it with a picture.

Personally - I think retina scanning is very cool. However, on a phone - less practical. Much easier to use a finger already holding the device. Retina scanning would make more sense on a laptop/iMac.

Think it will be worth using at the start but it depends how accurate it is. If he is very accurate I could certainly see myself using it a fair bit but I bet more often than not the fingerprint is the main option but hey options are good.

Maybe they speed up the fingerprint scanner even more so. It's quick as it is but to make it even quicker would be good.

Someone should tell Samsung that the Note line should be the - by handy defaults - productivity device absolutely no need for gimmicks.

The perfect Note 6 for e would take the things that made the Note 4 Samsung's best phone ever and just improve on the screen, specs and add more physical buttons (camera, mute, back and recent apps).

Stuff like Iris scanner and curved displays are solutions looking for a problem like smart watches.
