I wouldn't be surprised if this was initially more meant for a higher level of security for enterprise/govt users. The convenience and speed of a fp reader wouldn't be missed in those cases. But let's wait and see. As some of you have already said, it's always an option to turn off.

It still has the fingerprint scanner and I would hazard a safe guess 99% of Note 7 users will end up using that due to it's speed of unlocking and accuracy over the Iris scanner.

The Iris Scanner is the new Samsung heart rate reader. Fun for 3 minutes ...

It depends how fast it is. I like the way they did the sign in screen, with the option for iris recognition or entering your pin, I'm assuming fingerprint recognition will also be an option when turning on the phone. I've found the fp recognition on the Note 5 to be fairly bad and I've reverted back to using a pattern for some time now, it's much faster. So I can see opening my phone, and either it's faster than me entering in my pattern, or it's not and I enter in my pattern anyway. Anyway I'm coming from a surface pro 4 where I absolutely love windows hello and think it is a crucial feature. I don't think this will be crucial on a smartphone, but it can be handy, especially for those times you are one handed and you can't reach the fp sensor or draw a pattern, that happens to me all the time.

The problem with Iris scanner or facial recognition software is they add an extra step to the authentication process.
I can use my FP scanner and authenticate while i am picking my phone up. That cuts down the time considerably than having to hold the phone in front of my face to unlock it.

Now when Iris scanners and the like technology gets so good that I can glance down at my phone on my desk and unlock it with a glance....now that would be nice.

I hope it comes with 6GB RAM and 4000mAh battery, as I don't want to leave Samsung. My almost 2yrld Note 4 to this day is getting Software Updates and latest Security Patches e.g. today, waking up to the July patch with a software update that also seems to have improved battery quite a bit :) and the phone itself still up to par with most of the latest and greatest.

I would agree if we were talking about the iPhone, but the sensor on the Note 5 kind of sucks IMO. In theory you are definitely correct, I just find in real world use that differs some. I don't even bother with the fp sensor anymore, it's faster to just swipe a pattern. The location of the fp sensor coupled with the size/weight of the Note 5 also make it tougher to hit the fp sensor while you pick it up, if you are one handed you would really have to balance it all the way at the bottom and I don't like putting my phone at risk.

But I'm not necessarily debating the utility of the iris sensor, yeah I think it's a gimmick also. But depending on how good it is I still think it will have its uses, such as one handed operation. Meh, it's there and confirmed so I'm not going to complain about it, I'll try and make it a positive.

Hmm - I have the Note 5 and the FP sensor works flawlessly for me. When you trained yours, did you do a ton of angles?

Yeah I train the same finger on multiple fingerprints, and all kinds of angles. It seems to work pretty well at first, but over time my fingerprints get recognized less and less for some reason. I can redo them, but it's too much of a hassle.

The problem with that logic is this ... As soon as it's unlocked - you are still going HAVE to utilise your fingers regardless if you want to do anything with the phone. If they are that busy or dirty you likely wouldn't be unlocking anyway.

In the time it takes to raise the phone to your face, you could have already unlocked ....

Well I'm guilt of using my phone even when my hands might be dirty or wet. The fp sensor won't work, but the screen still works fine. I can see this being nice when I'm doing some construction or working on the motorcycle. Heck even at the gym I have issues if I have sweaty fingers.

Anyone think the ATT bogo deal + free gear S2 will apply to the Note 7?!?!? The deal says it's good until August 31, but doesn't list the N7. Would be pretty sweet and might make me stay with ATT. http://www.sammobile.com/2016/07/14/att-sweetens-its-samsung-bogo-deal-with-free-gear-s2-smartwatch/

I agree with this. Sadly it's often a case of 'because we can' rather than 'because we should' when it comes to choices that hardware manufacturers end up going with.

So true best examples are things like force touch, curved displays and some other gimmicky stuff.

So seems like the Note will come out on August 2 I just hope they focus on the device instead of stuff like hype

Would it be recommended to buy an international phone versus the US carrier-sold (T-Mobile) phone? I want the Exynos processor on my Note 7, just unsure if it's better to buy the carrier version (i could careless about wifi calling, etc.)

it's important to buy one with an unlocked boot loader in order to root it and remove all the bloatware and unleash the full power of this beast.

I'd recommend waiting a bit and then read xda developers, they'll be the first to have a root guide up.

It'll be interesting to see this time when Samsung makes the note 7 available unlocked. Probably 3 months again? And expensive.

I hope some of those are true...I would love to be able to walk into a TMO store and use my JoD on Aug 2nd after the keynote and get a Note 7.

I'd definitely pay the extra, I may end up waiting for this but it will be dangerous as the iphone may steal me away. Was the unlocked s7 that much more than the carrier one?

They are the same phone and price minus carrier branding and bloat.

My understanding is that the unlocked version is still on the May security update. So not really better from an update standpoint. Assuming that is just a hiccup getting started though.

If I get a Note 7 through my AT&T Next plan, is it going to come with obnoxious AT&T stuff on it? And if so, can I take the carrier stuff off of it without messing up the phone?

Yeah and from what I read the unlocked ones still have locked bootloaders so they can't even be rooted.

Crazy, but makes sense. My understanding is that it was Samsung who wanted the lock. They don't trust users to have control over their $800 device. At least give the users a choice to do it even if they want to trip Knox and void the warranty. It should be an option.

Edit: Missed this but looks like it is an option now, just not from Samsung:

I know with past AT&T android phones and current Verizon android phones, you can at least disable or uninstall the ATT/VZW apps/bloat/etc. You can't get rid of the annoying "AT&T" text in the top left of the status bar but can at least disable some stuff (from past experiences a few years ago).

If it is like the S7, then yes, AT&T is filled with extra obnoxious AT&T and DirectTV stuff:
http://www.androidcentral.com/atts-pre-installed-galaxy-s7-apps-are-more-annoying-ever

They are also the worst for updates. Avoid at all costs.
Well...poop. I was looking at the unlocked options on the S7 and S7Edge and some reviewers said it can't work on AT&T 4GLTE but one reviewer said it could if you took it in to the AT&T store and they did something, but he didn't specify what.

I'm not sure there's any point waiting for an unlocked version of the Note7 if it won't work fully functional on the AT&T network.

If I were to get an unlocked version down the road if they release one, where would I get the updates from?

Basically I'm drawn to the camera. I've heard Samsung does great cameras. I've seen it for myself. I have blonde hair and iPhones turn my hair a weird green-yellow tint and Samsung cameras leave it plain blonde. That was one draw factor...I'm tired of looking like I'm the victim of a heavily chlorinated swimming pool.

The S-pen also seemed pretty cool when I played around with the demo in Best Buy. That's why I was leaning toward a Note. But Best Buy has some sweet deals on unlocked S7 and S7Edges--I'll keep my options open to them, too, and possibly Nexus or any bloat free options with good cameras.

We just got a Samsung Smart TV and were blown away by how smart it actually is. Talk about "it just works". It really works and instantly recognized all devices we had hooked up and rendered our other remotes redundant. It puts our old Apple TV to shame. So I was willing to give Samsung flagship phones a serious look.

The Note 7 debuts just a few days after my big 5-0 birthday. So even though my husband still thinks Android is evil, he's willing to let me be the family Guinea pig for a new foray into Android, because he's not so thrilled with Apple at the moment either and really digging his Surface Pro even though he was making fun of it before a shortage of the Apple laptop he wanted forced him to get one. He does own android phones, including an old Samsung Galaxy of some sort, but they are old crappy ones.

Anyway that's how I, a total Android ignoramus and Apple loyalist ended up here. I have no clue what I'm doing and my husband expects my Android foray to fail spectacularly. But he says I will have to learn that for myself. Whatever. I feel like there's never been a better time to give it a try because I have my trusty SE to see me through this and though my 6SPlus is awesome, I am willing to trade it in for an adventure.

According to what I just read you can disable some of the bloat but can't uninstall it. And they did lock it down so there's no rooting possible through officially sanctioned channels. Not that I know how to do that, anyway. I suppose I can learn. I have installed other people's hacks and even made my own custom content for games before. But I'm not sure I want to try that on a nearly $1,000 device.

Well...I've got a lot of research to do. Thank you all for the help and answers already rendered.
